Notes on Ann Brander Tinlin

Some family histories note that Ann (or Anna) Brander was "the niece of Sir William Kay, onetime Mayor of London”.  There are problems with this statement, because Sir William Kay was never the Mayor of London, although his granduncle Sir Brook Watson was.  It should be noted that Ann named one of her sons Brook.  However, Brook Watson had four sisters, none of whom were the parent or grandparent of Ann (see below).

The Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Essex (Ontario) notes instead that she was "a first cousin to William Kay, Baronet of Eastshire, Surrey".  This may make more sense.  This William Kay was the son of another William Kay, Esq. of Montreal, by his wife, Anne Webber, niece of Sir Brook Watson.  This Anne Webb had six siblings, but none of them are supposed to have had any surviving issue.  This means Ann Brander would have to be the first cousin of William Kay on his father's side; hence, her mother would have to be a Kay.

I have been unable to find a Kay family tree, but there were at least three brothers:
1. William Kay, of Montreal, died in 1787-8.
2. Alexander Kay, killed by an Indian in St. Louis.
3. John Kay.
These men were all fairly prominent merchants and adventurers.  One source referred to John as a "Scotchman".

The Brander family were prominent in Elgin, Moray and very numerous.  There is a record of a marriage there (in nearby New Spynie, Moray) of Andrew Brander to Anna Kay on 3 Jun 1769.  As Ann Brander Tinlin was said to have been born in 1771, this would be a good prospect for her parents, but is completely speculation at this point.

WATSON-WEBB-KAY FAMILY TREE

John Watson, of Cawood, Yorkshire; later of Kingston-upon-Hull. Married 1st Elizabeth, sister of Thomas Meals, of York, on 12 Jan 1720 in York.  He married 2nd Sarah Schofield (or Scolfield), daughter of Joseph Schofield of York, on 23 Nov 1729 in Beverly, Yorkshire.  He died in 1740.  By his first wife, he had three daughters (other two possibly Margaret and Dorothy), of whom only one had issue:
1. Elizabeth Watson (probably chr. 5 Jun 1723 in Kingston-upon-Hull).  She married Richard Webber, Esq., of Plymouth.  They had children, all of whom died unmarried or without issue, except for Anne:
      1a. Richard Brook Webber.
      2a. John Webber.
3a. Anne Webber.  Married William Kay, Esq., of Montreal.
1b. Sir William Kay, 2nd Baronet.  Born 5 Dec 1777.  Died 1850 without issue.
2b. Sir Brook Kay, 3rd Baronet.  Born 1780 in Montreal.  Married twice and left issue.
      4a. Brook Webber.
      5a. Sarah Webber.
      6a. Anne Webber. [A mistake?]
      7a. Helen Webber.

By his second wife, John Watson had a son and a daughter:
2. Sir Brook Watson, 1st Baronet, Lord Mayor of London.  Born 7 Feb 1735 in Plymouth, Devonshire.  Married Helen, daughter of Colin Campbell, in 1760, but they had no children.  He died 2 Oct 1807.
3. Mary Watson.  Married William Pitt of Mortlake, Surrey on 6 Apr 1777 in St. Marylebone, London.
