Notes on Ann Brander Tinlin
Some family histories note that Ann (or Anna) Brander
was "the niece of Sir
William Kay, onetime Mayor of London”. There are problems with this
statement, because Sir William Kay was never the Mayor
of London, although his granduncle Sir Brook Watson was.
It should be noted that Ann named one of her sons Brook.
However, Brook Watson had four sisters, none of whom
were the parent or grandparent of Ann (see below).
The Commemorative Biographical Record of the County
of Essex (Ontario) notes instead that she was "a first
cousin to William Kay, Baronet of Eastshire, Surrey". This may make
more sense. This William Kay was the son of
another William Kay, Esq. of Montreal, by his wife, Anne
Webber, niece of Sir Brook Watson. This Anne Webb
had six siblings, but none of them are supposed to have
had any surviving issue. This means Ann Brander
would have to be the first cousin of William Kay on his
father's side; hence, her mother would have to be a Kay.
I have been unable to find a Kay family tree, but
there were at least three brothers:
1. William Kay, of Montreal, died in 1787-8.
2. Alexander Kay, killed by an Indian in St. Louis.
3. John Kay.
These men were all fairly prominent merchants and
adventurers. One source referred to John as a
"Scotchman".
The Brander family were prominent in Elgin, Moray and
very numerous. There is a record of a marriage
there (in nearby New Spynie, Moray) of Andrew Brander to
Anna Kay on 3 Jun 1769. As Ann Brander Tinlin was
said to have been born in 1771, this would be a good
prospect for her parents, but is completely speculation
at this point.
