The Tinlin Family of Bowden, Roxburghshire
Robert Tinlin. Married Margaret ______ [son’s death cert.]. In c.
1785 they were living in Bowden, Roxburghshire [son's cen. record]. The
only couple of that name I am aware of is Robert and Margaret (Turnbull) Tinlin
(see the TINLIN of HAWICK family). However, they
already had a son named William (of whom nothing further is known, he may have
died young); they might have been too old to have had a son born in 1785; and I
have no evidence that they ever left Hawick On the other hand, this
William named a son Walter, which was common in the Hawick family. They had a son:
William Tinline. Born c. 1785 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.]. He married Margaret McDonald on 4 Feb 1816 in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire [SCR]. She was born 6 Jan 1791 in Bowden, daughter of Walter and Janey (Drauchet?) Donald [cen., reg. as Donald]. They were living in Bowden in 1831 [SCR]. He was an agricultural labourer [children’s marriage and death certs.]. In 1841 they were living in Bowden and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1851 they were living in Bowden and he was working as a farm servant [cen.]. In 1856 he was working as the Bowden sexton and grave digger [parish death register book]. In 1861 they were living on Main Street, Bowden, and he was an agricultural laborer [cen.]. She died in 1862 in Bowden District [SCVL]. In 1871 he was living in Bowden, a widower, formerly an agricultural laborer [cen.]. He died on 25 May 1878 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cert.]. They had children:
1. Margaret Tinline. Born c. 1817-9 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., 1871 says c. 1823, 1881 says c. 1824]. In 1841 she was living with her parents in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen.]. She married Alexander Scott on 20 Jul 1847 in Melrose [SCR, her death cert.]. He was born c. 1827 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [cen.]. In 1851 they were living at Prieston, Bowden, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. They were living in Bowden, Roxburghshire in c. 1853 and in Maxton, Roxburghshire in 1857 [cen., IGI]. In 1861 they were living at Howford Ploughman House, Kirkhope, Selkirkshire and he was working as a ploughman [cen.]. In 1871 they were living in Selkirk, Selkirkshire and he was working as a carter [cen.]. In 1881 they were living in Melrose, Selkirkshire, and he was working as a lab skinner [sic] [cen.]. She died on 13 Jan 1886 at 108 Haliburton Place, Ladhope, Selkirkshire [cert.]. In 1891 he was living at the same address and working as a skinworks labourer [cen.].
2. Walter Tinline. Born c. 1821 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.]. In 1841 he was living in Buccleuch Street, Melrose, working as a “T. Tailor” [cen.]. In 1851 he was living in Bowden, was unmarried, and was a tailor [cen.]. He died unmarried on 5 Feb 1856 in Bowden of a fever/chest affection, age 34, and was bur. in Bowden Churchyard [cert.].
3. Williamina Tinlin. Born c. 1824-1826 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.]. In 1841 she was living in Bewliehill, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, working as a family servant [cen. as Mina]. She married John Macaulay in Dec 1849 in Melrose, Roxburghshire [SCR as Mina, her death cert. as McAuley]. He was born c. 1812 in Ireland and was a journeyman joiner [her death cert.]. Cannot locate in 1851 [cen.]. In 1861 they were living in Bothwell, Lanarkshire and he was working as a general wright [cen. index]. Cannot locate in 1871 [cen.]. In 1881 they were living in Bothwell and he was working as a joiner [cen. as McAulay]. She died 26 Mar 1882 at Paterson’s land, Main Street, Bellshill, Lanark, age 58 [cert.]. He survived her [her death cert.].
4. Robert Tinlin. Born c. 1825 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.]. In 1841 he was living in Bowden Mill, Bowden, Roxburghshire, working as a manual servant [cen.]. In 1851 he was living in Bowden, was unmarried, and was an agricultural laborer [cen.]. In 1861 he was living in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, working as a wood carter [cen.]. He died unmarried on 5 Jul 1865 in Bowden, age 40 [cert.]. At the time of his death, he had been working as a laborer [cert.].
5. James Tinline. Born c. 1828 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.]. In 1841 he was living in Haremos [Hare Moss], Ashkirk, Roxburghshire, working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. Cannot locate on 1851 census. He married Margaret Inglis on 13 Jan 1852 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire [cen., SCR]. She was born c. 1829 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire or Langholm, Dumfries [cen.]. In 1861 they were living in Linton Mile, Ashkirk, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a ploughman [cen.]. In 1871 they were living in Clerkland Cottage, Ashkirk, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a farm steward [cen.]. In 1881 they were living in Ashkirk, Roxburghshire and he was working as a farm steward [cen.]. In 1891 they were living in Kaeside, Melrose, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.]. In 1901 they were living in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.]. He died 5 Apr 1914 in Earlston, Berwickshire, age 86 [cert.]. She died in 1915 in Earlston District, age 86 [SCVL].
6. [possibly] Mary Tinline. Born c. 1829 in Roxburghshire [cen.]. In 1841 she was living with William and Margaret Tinline in Bowden, Roxburghshire, but there was another Mary, age 1, living with them who was definitely their daughter, so this older Mary may have been a relative instead [cen.].
7. Alexander Tinlin(e). Born in 1831 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen. (1871 says born c. 1835), cert., CT, reg. (birth and baptism dates left blank in register, appears to be in 1831)]. In 1841 he was living with his parents in Bowden [cen.]. In 1851 he was living in Kittyfield, Melrose, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.]. He and his future wife had a daughter before they were married, born in Oct 1859 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire [IGI]. He married Agnes Scott on 27 Jan 1860 at Mountbenger, Yarrow Parish, Selkirkshire [cen., cert., CT]. She was born 24 Feb 1836 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, daughter of Robert and Isabel (Dalgliesh) Scott [cen., cert., IGI]. At the time of their marriage, he was living in Chesterbale and she was living in Mountbenger; he worked as a plowman [cert., CT]. In 1861 they were living in Linton Parkhead, Ashkirk, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a ploughman [cen.]. They were living in Ashkirk in Apr 1861, Jun 1863, in Selkirk, Selkirkshire in Feb 1865, and in Yarrow, Selkirkshire in Sep 1867, when he worked as a labourer [IGI, cen., son’s death cert.]. They were living in Ettrick, Selkirkshire c. 1869, in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire c. 1871, 1874 and 1875, and in Selkirk, Selkirkshire in Oct 1876 and c. Feb 1880 [cen., son’s birth cert.]. In 1871 they were living in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1876 he was working as a woollen factory worker [son’s birth cert.]. In 1881 they were living in Selkirk and he was working at a woollen factory [cen.]. In 1888 he was listed as a general labourer [mar. cert., CT]. In 1891 they were living at 8 Hallidays Park, Selkirk, Selkirkirkshire, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. She died in 1900 in Selkirk District, age 62 [SCVL]. In 1901 he was living in Selkirk, a widower [cen.]. He died in 1903 in Selkirk District, age 66 [SCVL]. They had children:
1a. Isabella Tinlin (or Scott). Born 3 Oct 1859 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire [IGI]. Her parents married the year after her birth. In 1861 she was living with her parents in Linton Parkhead, Ashkirk, Roxburghshire [cen.]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. She died of typhoid fever on 12 Oct 1878 at Heatherlie, Selkirk, age 18 [cert.]. At the time of her death, she had been working as a woolen birler [cert.].
2a. William Tinlin. Born 8 Apr 1861 in Ashkirk, Roxburghshire [IGI, cen. says Selkirk, Selkirkshire]. In 1871 he was living with his parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. Cannot locate in 1881 or 1891 [cen.]. He married 1st Christina Smith on 9 Jan 1894 at The Manse, 30 Ferry Road, North Leith, Edinburgh [cert.]. She was born c. 1873 in Banff, Banffshire, daughter of James and Elizabeth (McKenzie) Smith [cen., marr. cert.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living at 144 Bonnington Road, North Leith, and was working as a dairyman, and she was living at 23 Rutland Street, Edinburgh, working as a domestic servant [cert.]. In Nov 1894 they were living at 13 London Row, Leith [daughter’s birth cert.]. In 1901 they were living in Leith, and he was working as a baker’s lineman (?) worker and as a vanman (?) [cen., son’s birth cert.]. She died in 1908 in Morningside, Edinburgh District, age 35 [SCVL]. He married 2nd Helen L. Smith on 29 Apr 1913 at 34 Chambers Street, Edinburgh [cert.]. She was born c. 1862, daughter of ______ and Christina (Laurie) Smith [marr. cert., death cert. says natural daughter of Agnes Laurie]. At the time of their marriage, he was a vanman living at 67 Duke Street, Leith, and she was a grocer’s assistant living at 11 Abbeyhill, Edinburgh [cert.]. In 1922-3 they were living at 23 Buchanan Street, Leith [Anc.]. She died 25 Mar 1938 at 21 Napier Street, Penicuik, Midlothian, age 76 [cert.]. He died in 1944 in Penicuik District, age 83 [SCVL]. He had children by his first wife:

2b. Elizabeth Vida Tinlin. Born 23 Nov 1894 at 13 London Row, Leith, Edinburgh [cert.]. She died in 1900 in Leith North District [SCVL].
3b. Alexander Tinlin. Born 1896 in Leith North District, Edinburgh [SCVL, cen.]. In 1901 he was living with his parents in Leith, Edinburgh [cen.]. He died in 1960 in Morningside District, Edinburgh, age 64 [SCVL].
4b. Margaret Messer Tinlin. Born 1897 in Leith North District, Scotland [SCVL, cen.]. In 1901 she was living with her parents in Leith, Edinburgh [cen.]. She died in 1933 in Morningside District, Edinburgh, age 35 [SCVL].
5b. William Tinlin. Born in 1898 in Leith North District [SCVL, cen.]. In 1901 he was living with his parents in Leith, Edinburgh [cen.]. He was a Private in the 7th Battalion, Royal Scots, occupation rope worker [death cert.]. He died on 22 May 1915 in the Gretna Rail Disaster on the Caledonian Railway at Quintinshill, Gretna Parish, Dumfriesshire, age 19 [cert.]. At the time of his death, his residence had been 11 Bangor Road, Leith [cert.]. Bur. in Edinburgh Rosebank Cemetery, Edinburgh [CWGC].
6b. John Smith Tinlin. Born 7 Dec 1901 at 38 West Bowling-green Street, Leith, Edinburgh [cert.]. He immigrated to Canada in Nov 192[2 or 3], when his occupation was baker and his destination was Winnipeg [Anc.]. He married Edna Agnes Harlen [FSR]. She was born 13 Nov 1898 in Douglas, Minnesota, daughter of Elbert and Clara (Bryal) Harlen [FSR]. He died 10 Jan 1970 in Nelson, British Columbia, age 68 [BC (when his wife was called "Edna Pounder")]. She died 19 Apr 1985 in Nelson, British Columbia, age 86 [FSR].
3a. Margaret Tinline. Born 20 Jun 1863 in Ashkirk, Roxburghshire [IGI]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. She died in 1878 in Selkirk District, age 15 [SCVL].
4a. Mary Tinlin. Born 6 Feb 1865 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen., mar. cert., IGI]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in Selkirk [cen.]. She married William Dickson on 28 Sep 1888 at Henderson’s Court, Selkirk [cert.]. He was born c. 1864 in Selkirk, son of William and Jane (Ferguson) Dickson [marr. cert.]. She worked as a woollen birler, he worked as a woollen scourer [cert.]. In 1891 they were living at 4 Slocthornbank, Selkirk and he was working as a wool scourer [cen.]. In 1901 they were living at 10 South Port, Selkirk, and he was working as a woollen scourer [cen.]. She died in 1949 in Selkirk District, age 84 [SCVL].
5a. “Male” Tinlin. Born prematurely on 5 Sep 1867 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire [death cert.]. He died six hours after birth on 5 Sep 1867 in Lewinshope, Yarrow [cert.].
6a. Janet Tinlin. Born 18 Sep 1868 in Traquair, Peebleshire [IGI, SCVL, cen. says born in Ettrick, Selkirkshire, sister’s mar. cert.]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen.]. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Selkirk, working as a woollen millworker [cen.]. In 1901 she was living with her father in Selkirk, was unmarried, and was working as a woolen winder [cen. – says born in Walderburn, Peebleshire]. She died in 1938 in Selkirk District, age 69 [SCVL as Tinline].
7a. Robina Tinlin. Born 3 Oct 1870 in Traquair, Peebleshire [IGI, SCVL, cen. says born in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire, sister’s mar. cert.]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Old Howford, Traquair, Peebleshire [cen.]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen.]. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Selkirk and was an unemployed woollen millworker [cen.]. In Nov 1898 she was living in Market Place, Melrose, Roxburghshire, working as a domestic servant [daughter’s birth cert.]. In 1901 she was living in Langshaw District, Roxburghshire [cen.]. She died in 1927 in Selkirk District, age 56 [SCVL]. She had a natural daughter:
1b. Agnes Scott Tinlin. Born 3 Nov 1898 in Market Place, Melrose, Roxburghshire [cert.]. In 1901 she was living with Alexander Tinlin in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, and was listed as his “relative” (actually his granddaughter) [cen.]. She married ______ Armstrong [SCVL]. She died in 1981 in Selkirk District, age 82 [SCVL].
8a. Agnes S. Tinlin. Born 26 Jul 1872 in Howford, Traquair, Peebles [IGI, SCVL, cen. says born Kirkhope, Selkirkshire c. 1874, sister’s mar. cert.]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen.]. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Selkirk and was an unemployed woollen millworker [cen.]. In 1901 she was living with her father in Selkirk and was unmarried [cen.]. She died unmarried on 19 Dec 1948 at Kingspark, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, age 76 [cert.]. Her usual residence was 69 Pine Grove, Selkirk [death cert.].
9a. Alexander Tinlin. Born 21 Oct 1874 in Howford, Traquair, Peebles [IGI, cen. says born in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire, sister’s mar. cert., CT, SCVL]. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen.]. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Selkirk and was a woollen millworker [cen.]. In 1901 he was living with his father in Selkirk, was unmarried, and was working as a woolen tweed wanhouseman (?) [cen.]. He married Mary Grieve in 1908 in Galashiels District [SCVL]. She was born c. 1875, daughter of Walter and Mary (Tait) Grieve [death cert.]. In 1931 he was a retired tweedmill manager [daughter's marr. cert.]. She died 30 Jun 1949 at 8 Dunsdale Cottages, Selkirk, age 74 [cert.]. At the time of her death, he was a retired woolen piecer [her death cert.]. He died in 1949 in Melrose District, age 74 [SCVL]. They had children (one daughter married ______ Wilson) [her death cert.]:
1b. Annie Bella Keddie Tinline. Born c. 1903 [calc. (no SCVL record, apparently a daughter of his wife by an earlier marriage)]. She married Robert Douglas Thomson on 19 Oct 1931 at the Sheriff Court House, Edinburgh [cert.]. He was born c. 1881, son of David and Margaret (White) Thomson [marr. cert.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living at 26 Clerk Street, Edinburgh and she was living at 34 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh, both working as stationers [cert.]. In 1932, she filed a case against David Baillie, in which she was called “formerly Annie B. Kadie, now Mrs. Annie B. Thomson [The Scotsman, 12 Jul 1932, page 5]. She married 2nd Joseph Arogyaswamy in 1935 in St. Giles District, Edinburgh [SCVL]. But her divorce from Robert Thomson was only granted in 1936 [NAS].
10a. Robert Tinlin. Born 5 Oct 1876 at Bridge Street, Philiphaugh, Selkirk [cert.]. He died in 1878 in Selkirk District, age 2 [SCVL].
11a. James Tinlin. Born c. Feb 1880 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen., sister’s mar. cert., SCVL]. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Selkirk [cen.]. He died of croup on 26 Feb 1886 at Henderson’s Court, Selkirk, age 5 years and 11 months [cert.].
8. Janet Tinlin(e). Born c. 1833-8 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [cen.]. In 1841 she was living with her parents in Bowden [cen.]. In 1851 she was living in Bowden, working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1861 she was living at the Howford Ploughman House, Kirkhope Selkirkshire, with her sister and brother-in-law, working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1871 she was living with her father in Bowden and was unmarried [cen.]. In 1881 she was living in Bowden, was an outdoor general servant, and was unmarried [cen.]. In 1891 she was living at 10 Ettrick Terrace, Selkirk, Selkirkshire [cen. index]. In 1901 she was living at 9 Damside, Galashiels, Selkirkshire with her daughter and son-in-law and was a retired wool sailer [cen.]. She died on 5 Jul 1906 at 29 Albert Place, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, age 64 [cert.]. At the time of her death, she was single, and was working as a wool millworker [cert.]. She had a natural daughter:
1a. Margaret MacDonald Tinline. Born 3 Jan 1865 in Bowden, Roxburghshire [IGI, death cert.]. In 1871 she was living in Bowden with her mother and grandfather [cen.]. In 1881 she was living with her mother, working as a nurse [cen.]. In 1891 she was living with her mother in Selkirk and was working as a woollen millworker [cen.]. She married John Towers Metcalfe in 1893 in Selkirk District [SCVL]. He was born c. 1867 in England and went by Charles Metcalfe [cen., HT]. In 1901 they were living at 9 Damside, Galashiels, Selkirkshire and he was working as a scavenger [cen.]. He arrived in Quebec on the "Ionian" in Jul 1907 [Anc.]. She arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia with her children on the "Ionian" in Apr 1908 [Anc.]. She died 17 Nov 1910 in Brantford, Brant Co., Ontario and was bur. there in Mount Hope Cemetery [HT, cert.].
9. Mary Tinlyne. Born c. 1841 in Bowden, Roxburgshire [cen., death cert.]. In 1841 she was living with her parents in Bowden [cen.]. In 1851 she was living in Bowden [cen.]. In 1861 she was living in Cammerlaws, Westruther, Berwickshire, working as a domestic servant [cen.]. She married Alexander Galbraith on 15 Dec 1865 in Bowden [IGI as Tinlen]. He was born c. 1839 in Gordon or Earlston, Berwickshire [cen.]. He was a farm servant [her death cert.]. In 1871 they were living in Cammerlaws, Westruther, Berwickshire, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. She died 13 Feb 1876 in Harelaw, Westruther, Berwickshire, age 34 [cert.]. He remarried and was living in Blythe, Lauder, Berwickshire in 1881, working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1891 he was living in Darlingfield, Earlston, Berwickshire, working as a farm servant [cen.]. In 1901 he was living at Darlingfield Farm Cottages, Earlston, working as a hind [cen.].
