The Tinline Family of Crailinghall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire


______ Tinline.  Married Isabella Hunter [cen.].  She was born c. 1782 in England [cen.].  They were living in Eccles, Berwickshire in 1805 [cen.].  In 1841 and 1851 she was living with her son in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  She was apparently deceased by 1861 [cen.].  They had a child:

1. William Tinline.  Born c. 1805 in Eccles, Berwickshire [cen.].  In 1841 he was living with his mother in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, and was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He married Elizabeth Scott on 2 Feb 1845 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and on 9 Feb 1845 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [SCR, reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Jedburgh, and she was living in Grange, Ancrum [reg.].  She was born c. 1816-22 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire, daughter of Walter and Elizabeth (Robson) Scott [cen., death cert.].  Living in Jedburgh in Aug 1846 [SCR].  In 1851 they were living in Crailinghall, Jedburgh and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  He was a farm steward [her death cert.].  He died before 1861 [cen.].  In 1861 she was living in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, a widow, working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1871 she was living in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, with her son John [cen.].  She died 13 Mar 1872 in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, age 55 [cert.].  They had a child:

1a. John Tinline.  Born c. 1846 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and chr. 23 Aug 1846 at the Associate Congregation or Free Church, Jedburgh [SCR, cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Crailinghall, Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his mother in Crailinghall, Jedburgh [cen.].  He married Helen Gray on 27 Mar 1868 in Crailinghall, Jedburgh [IGI, cen., cert., daughter’s birth cert.].  She was born c. 1848 in Jedburgh, daughter of Thomas and Helen (Linton) Gray [cen., cert.].  In 1871 they were living in Crailing Hall, Jedburgh, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In Apr 1880 they were living in Crailinghall and he was working as a farm servant [daughter’s birth cert.].  In 1881 they were living in Jedburgh and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].   In 1886 he was listed as a wood forester [cert.].  She died on 1 Jan 1886 at 36 Livingstone Place, Galashiels, Selkirkshire [cert.].  In 1891 he was living at 110 Scott Street, Galashiels and was working as a coal lorryman [cen.].  In Jun 1898 he was listed as a lorryman and in Jul 1898 as a retired farm overseer [daughters’ marr. and death certs.].  In 1901 he was living at 110 Scott Street, Galashiels, a retired labourer [cen.].  He drowned on 12 Jul 1904 in a pond at Ploughlands, Crailing, Roxburghshire, age 56 [cert.].  They had children:.

1b. Helen Tinline.  Born 4 Apr 1869 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Crailing Hall, Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her father in Galashiels and was working as a woolen weaver [cen.].  She married William John Roberts in 3rd quarter 1896 in Islington District (Middlesex) [CR, her death cert.].  He was a tweed manufacturer and they lived at Gracemount, Stow [her death cert.].  She died 16 Jul 1898 at 15 Rothesay Place, Edinburgh, age 29, following an operation [cert.].

2b. Elizabeth Tinline.  Born 30 Mar 1871 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Crailing Hall, Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in Jedburgh with her parents and was also listed separately with her grandfather Thomas Gray in Oxnam, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1891 she was living at 8 Roxburgh Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, working as a general servant [cen.].  She married Alexander Dryden in 1895 in Galashiels District [SCVL, her death cert.].  He was born c. 1865 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at 110 Scott Street, Galashiels and he was working as a mechanical engineer [cen.].  He predeceased her [her death cert.].  She died 2 Dec 1953 at Galashiels Hospital, Galashiels, age 82, at which time her usual residence had been 3 Scott Street, Galashiels [cert.].

3b. William Tinline.  Born 3 May 1873 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL, IGI].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his father in Galashiels, working as an apprentice plumber [cen.].  He was in the Cameron Highlanders for over 11 years, including action in the Sudan and South African campaigns [BSD].  He also served during the complete length of World War I [BSD].  He married Esabella D'Macra on 4 Jul 1903 in Cairo, Egypt [BSD].  They were involved in a court case (divorce?) against one another in 1910-12 in Cairo, but if it was a divorce, it apparently did not occur [PRO].  In c. 1914 they were living at 2 Cromwell Road, Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty [BSD].  They had a son:

1c. John Tinline.  Born c. 1904 [father's BSD].

4b. Sarah Tinline.  Born 23 Oct 1874 in Crailinghall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI, marr. cert.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her father in Galashiels District [cen.].  She married David C. Spence on 1 Jun 1898 at the South United Presbyterian Manse, Galashiels [cert.].  He was born c. 1875 in Leslie, Fife, son of William and Mary (Clement) Spence [cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 59 Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen, working as a railway clerk, and she was living at 110 Scott Street, Galashiels, working as a housekeeper [cert.].  In 1901 they were living at 23 Allan Street, Aberdeen and he was working as a railway parcel clerk [cen.].  She died in 1953 in Aberdeen Northern District, age 78 [SCVL].

5b. Thomas Tinline.  Born 1877 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL, IGI].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his father in Galashiels District [cen.].  He was a witness at his sister Sarah’s marriage in Jun 1898 [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his father and sister in Galashiels, working as a cabinetmaker [cen.].  He died on 12 Feb 1904 in Annan, Dumfriesshire, age 26 [cert.].  At the time of his death, he was single and had been working as a rimmaker (?) [cert.].

6b. Isabella Hunter Tinline.  Born 23 Apr 1880 in Crailinghall, Jedburgh [cert.].  She died in 1880 in Jedburgh District [SCVL].
