The Tinlin Family of Edgerston, Roxburghshire


Robert Tinlin.  Born c. 1813 in Roxburghshire [cen.].  Married Isabel Oliver [SCR].  She was born 2 Aug 1808 in Crailing, Roxburghshire, daughter of John and Isabel (Turnbull) Oliver [cen., IGI].  They were living in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire in May 1837 and Sep 1841 [SCR].  He is probably the Robert Tinline who was living in Huntford, Jedburgh in 1841, working as a labourer [cen.].  In 1841 she was living without him in Crailing, Roxburghshire [cen.].   He was a laborer [daughter’s marr. cert.].  He died before 1844 [cen., her marriage record].  She married 2nd John Drummond on 13 Dec 1844 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [IGI under her maiden name].  In 1851 they were living in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1861 she was living in Dolphinstone, Oxnam, Roxburghshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1871 she was living in Bush, Edgerston, Roxburghshire, a widow, working as a housekeeper [cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 she was living at Cleughhead Cottage, Hobkirk, Roxburghshire [cen.].  They had children:

1. John Tinline.  Chr. 7 May 1837 at the Associate Congregation or Free Church, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [SCR].  In 1841 he was living with his mother in Crailing, Roxburghshire [cen.].   In 1851 he was living in Bemersyde, Mertoun, Berwickshire, working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1861 he was living in Carlshaugh, Edgerston, Roxburghshire, working as a ploughman [cen.].  He married Janet Dickson on 17 Jan 1862 at Dolphinston in Oxnam, Roxburghshire [cert.].  She was born c. 1842 in Chestas or Southdean, Roxburghshire, daughter of Charles and Helen (Turnbull) Dickson [cen., marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Dolphinston, Oxnam, and were working as farm servants [cert.].  They were living in Maxton, Roxburghshire in Apr 1866, in Jedburgh in Mar 1870, Jan 1872, and in Ancrum, Roxburghshire c. 1875 [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Sharplaw Hinds Houses, Jedburgh, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In Jul 1877 they were living in Hoselaw Mains, Linton, Roxburghshire [daughter’s birth cert.].  In Jun 1879 they were living in Doorpool, Southdean, where he worked as a hind, when three of their children died of diphtheria within one week [death certs.].  In 1881 they were living in Carham, Northumberland, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1881 she was also listed as visiting Sarah I. Oliver in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1883 they were living in Middle Softlaw, Kelso, Roxburghshire, and he was working as an agricultural laborer and a road man [son’s birth cert., son’s marr. cert.].  In 1891 they were living in Crooked House Hamlet, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a general laborer [cen.].  They are apparently the couple living in Pierhead, Kelso, Roxburghshire in 1901, when he was working as a carter [cen.].  She died 29 May 1911 at the Poorhouse, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, age 68 (usual residence Kelso) [cert.].  He died 14 Dec 1916 at the Kelso Poorhouse, Kelso, Roxburghshire, age 80 (usual residence Signalawshill (?), Roxburgh) [cert.].  They had children (he also had a nephew named John Scott):

1a. Robert Tinlin.  Born 25 Jun 1862 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire [IGI].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Sharplaw Hinds Houses, Jedburgh [cen.]. He married Elizabeth Jane Alcorn on 23 Nov 1883 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cert.].  She was born 2 Dec 1861 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire, daughter of John and and Agnes (Elliot) Alcorn [marr. cert., IGI].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Crooked House, Sprouston, and was working as an agricultural labourer, and she was living in Sprouston working as a domestic servant [cert.].  In 1885 and 1888 they were living in Sprouston and he was working as a labourer [sons’ birth certs.].  In 1891 they were living in Old Toll House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1901 they were living with her mother in the Toll House, Sprouston, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  She died 29 Dec 1925 at Toll House, Sprouston, age 65, bur. Sprouston Churchyard [SCVL, The Scotsman, 31 Dec 1925, page 10].  He died in 1945 in Dalkeith District, age 84 [SCVL].  They had children:

1b. John Alcorn Tinlin.  Born in 1884 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in Old Toll House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in the Toll House, Sprouston, and was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He married Agnes Craig on 26 Oct 1906 in Sprouston [SCVL, daughter's birth cert.].  She was born c. 1880 [calc.].  In 1907 he was working as a baker's vanman [daughter's birth cert.].  They later lived in Hawick, Roxburghshire [CWGC].  In 1932 they were living at the Old Manse, Hawick [daughter's marr. cert.].  He died in 1964 in Hawick District, age 80 [SCVL].  She died in 1968 in Hawick District, age 88 [SCVL].  They had children:

1c. Mary Jane Craig Tinline.  Born 4 Mar 1907 at the Folley Wooden (?), Kelso [cert.].  She married Adam Scott Forrest in 1930 in Hobkirk District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].  She died in 1979, age 72 [SCVL (no district listed)].

2c. Elizabeth Tinline.  Born in 1909 in Kelso District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].  She married Arthur Albert Young on 22 Jul 1932 at St. Andrew's Manse, Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCVL, daughter’s death cert.].  He was born c. 1906, son of James and Margaret Ann (McElrath) Young [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Dunholmhill Farm Cottages, Hawick, working as a forester, and she was living at Martinshouse Farm Cottages, working as a domestic cook [cert.].  He was a farm laborer and died before Jan 1948 [daughter’s death cert.].  She was living in Cathfair, Stow, Midlothian in Jan 1948 [daughter’s death cert.].  She died in 1981, age 71 [SCVL (no district listed)].

3c. Robert John Alcorn Tinlin.  Born in 1911 in Kelso District, Roxburghshire [SCVL, CWGC].  He was a guardsman in the Scots Guards [CWGC].  He died 7 Feb 1946 in Galashiels District, bur. Cavers Churchyard, Roxburghshire [CWGC, SCVL].  He was awarded an M.M. medal posthumously, given to his parents [The Scotsman, 27 Nov 1946, page 6].

4c. William Craig Tinlin.  Born in 1914 in Kelso District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].  He married May Turner Telford in 1947 in Kirkton District, Roxburghshire [RT, SCVL].  He died in 1972, age 58 [SCVL (no district listed)].  She was living in Hawick, Roxburghshire in 2003 [dir.].  They had children:

1d. Agnes Craig Tinlin.  Born [DR] in Hawick District, Roxburghshire [RT, SCVL].  She married Andrew Farquhar of Athelstaneford, East Lothian on [DR] [RT].

2d. Robert Telford Tinlin.  Born [DR] in Hawick, Roxburghshire [RT, SCVL].  He was living in Buckingham, England in Mar 2001 [The Independent (London), 17 Mar 2001, pg. 47].  He is a chief executive [Independent].  He has children by his partner Kirsty Towler:

5c. Olive Isabella Craig Tinlin.  Born 1920 in Bedrule District, Roxburghshire [SCVL, RT].  She married Robert Nisbet in 1942 in Hawick District [SCVL].  She died in 2002 in Dundee District, age 81 [SCVL].

2b. William Robert Tinlin.  Born 31 Jan 1885 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He died in 1885 in Sprouston District, Roxburghshire, age less than one year [SCVL].

3b. James Elliot Tinlin.  Born in 1886 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in Old Toll House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in the Toll House, Sprouston, and he was working as a hall-boy in a mansion [cen.].  He married Margaret “Peg” Jane Ogilvie Brown on 12 Nov 1910 in Edinburgh [cert.].  She was born c. 1887, daughter of William and Margaret (Ogilvie) Brown [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was a domestic butler living at Gardenbank, North Berwick, and she was a domestic servant living at Hotnes (?) House, Hardford (?) [cert.].  They immigrated to Australia, and lived in Perth [AWT].  In 1931, 1936-7, 1943, 1949 and 1954 they were living at Tantallon, 17 Robinson Street, Mayfield, Perth and he was working as a greenkeeper [VOR, ALV].  He died in Perth [TCR].  They had children:

1c. James Tinlin.  Born 25 Apr 1911 in North Berwick, East Lothian [ALV, NAA (says born in Edinburgh)].  In 1937 he was living at 185 Newcastle Street, Perth, and was working as a truck driver [VOR].  He married Phyllis Rosaline Cora Baker on 24 Jul 1939 at the Methodist Manse, Norseman, Western Australia [ALV].  She was the daughter of Allen and Amy Adeline (Trew) Baker [ALV].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Norseman working as a miner, and she was living in Sawyers Valley, Western Australia working as a waitress [ALV].  In 1943 she was listed at 51 Hampshire Street, Victoria Park, Western Australia [VOR].  In the 1940’s they were living in Claremont, Western Australia [NAA].

2c. Margaret Ogilvie Brown Tinlin.  Born in 1912 in North Berwick, East Lothian [SCVL].  Probably the same child elsewhere named as Margo Tinlin [AWT (says born in Perth, Australia)].  In 1943, 1949 and 1954 she was living with her parents at 17 Robinson Street, Mayfield, Perth [VOR].  She was listed in Perth, Western Australia phone directory c. 1997 [Internet (under Tinlin)].

3c. Robert William Peter Tinlin.  Born 14 Feb 1917 in North Berwick, East Lothian [AWT, SCVL].  In 1943 he was living at 17 Robinson Street, Mayfield, Perth, working as a printer [VOR].  During World War II he enlisted from Perth, Western Australia, when his next of kin was Elizabeth Tinlin [NAA].  He was attending flight school in Cunderdin in Jun 1941 [NAA].  He was a member of 460 Squadron RAAF Ground Crew from 19 Jul 1942 to 21 Dec 1943 [Internet].  He was in the R.A.A.F. in 1944 [engagement notice].  He married Elizabeth Eeles Brodie in 1944 in Berwick District, East Lothian [SCVL (as William only), TCR, The Scotsman, 1 Apr 1944, page 4].  She was born 8 Mar 1914, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Brodie, Pine Lodge, North Berwick [CR, The Scotsman].  She was in the M.I.S.C.H. in 1944 [The Scotsman].  In 1949 they were living at 20 Megalong Road, Nedlands, Western Australia and he was working as a printer [VOR].  She died in or shortly before Feb 1986 in Aylesbury Vale District, Buckinghamshire (England) [CR].

4b. George Tinlin.  Born in 1887 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in Old Toll House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in the Toll House, Sprouston [cen.]. He married Elizabeth Wait Scott Dodds on 22 Nov 1907 at Harden Peel, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cert.].  She was born c. 1888, daughter of John and Christina (Suddon) Dodds [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Crailing Orchard, Crailing, working as a gardener, and she was living at Harden Peel working as a farm outworker [cert.].  In 1908 he was working as an assistant market gardener [son's birth cert.].  They lived in Hawick, Roxburghshire [AWT].  He died in 1960 in Hawick, age 72 [SCVL, TCR].  She died in 1966 in Hawick District, age 77 [SCVL].  They had children:

Robert Tinlin.  Born 26 Feb 1908 at Palace, Crailing, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He was a bus driver [AWT].  He married Williamina "Minnie" Scott in 1935 in Roberton District, Roxburghshire [AWT, SCVL].  She was born c. 1908 [calc.].  She died in 1980, age 72 [SCVL (no district listed)].  He is possibly the Robert Tinlin who died in 1982, age 74 [SCVL (no district listed)].  He died in Hawick, Roxburghshire [AWT].  They had children:

1d. George Tinlin.  Born in Hawick, Roxburghshire [AWT].  Married Joyce ______ [AWT].

2c. Christina Suddon Tinlin.  Born in 1910 in Eccles District, Berwickshire [SCVL].  She married John Smith in 1932 in St. Giles District, Edinburgh [SCVL].  She died in 1988, age 78 [SCVL (no district listed)].

3c. Elizabeth Tinlin.  Born in Hawick, Roxburghshire [AWT].  She had a natural daughter:

1d. Lily Tinlin.  Born in 1931 in George Square District, Edinburgh [SCVL - also registered in Roberton District, Roxburghshire].  She married David Armstrong in 1949 in Hawick District, Roxburghshire [SCVL, obit.].  He was born c. 1931 [calc.].  He died 7 Nov 2007, age 76 [Hawick News, 16 Nov 2007].

4c. [probably] Georgina "Ena" Alcorn Tinlin.  Born in 1922 in Sprouston District, Roxburghshire [SCVL, AWT].  She married David Alexander Taylor in 1940 in St. Giles District, Edinburgh [SCVL, obit.].  He predeceased her [her obit.].  She died 12 Feb 2009 in Hawick, bur. Wilton Cemetery [Hawick News, 20 Feb 2009].

5b. Robert Tinlin.  Born 17 Oct 1888 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He died in 1888 in Sprouston District, age less than one year [SCVL].

6b. Andrew Tinline.  Born in 1890 in Sprouston District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].  He died in 1890 in Sprouston District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].

7b. Andrew Elliot Tinlin.  Born in 1895 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [CWGC, SCVL].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in the Toll House, Sprouston [cen.].  He was a private in the 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers [CWGC].  He was “at the front from the first, and was wounded during the retreat from Mons” [The Scotsman, 7 Mar 1916, page 6].  He died 24 Feb 1916, age 21, bur. in the Loos Memorial Cemetery, Loos-en-Gohelle, France [CWGC, SCVL, GRO War Deaths].

8b. Janet Alcorn Tinlin.  Born in 1901 in Sprouston District, Roxburghshire [SCVL (not on 1901 census)].  She married William Maxwell in 1926 in Sprouston District [SCVL].  He was born c. 1899 [obit.].  He died 30 Mar 1940 as the result of an accident in Sprouston, Roxburghshire, age 41, bur. Sprouston Churchyard [The Scotsman, 2 Apr 1940, page 12].  She died in 1969 in Morningside District, Edinburgh, age 67 [SCVL].

2a. Ellen (Helen) Tinlin.  Born 29 Apr 1864 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1871 she was living with her grandmother Isabella (Oliver) Drummond in Bush, Edgerston Parish, Roxburghshire and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her father in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  She was living in Crooked House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire in Apr 1885 and Jan 1887, and was working as an outworker in the latter year [sons’ birth certs.].  She married 1st Peter Reid on 28 Feb 1887 at the Town Hall, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He was born c. 1859 in Ireland, son of John and Mary (Muckenally?) Reid [marr. cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Kerchesters, Sprouston, working as a general labourer, and she was living at Crooked House, Sprouston (occupation unreadable) [cert.].  In 1891 they were living in Ednam, Roxburghshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He died and she married 2nd Peter Joseph Rhoddan in 1900 in Hume District [SCVL, CWGC].  He was born c. 1855 in Ireland [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at Waulkmill House, Fogo, Berwickshire and he was working as a "Caidburn groom" [cen.].  He was a farm worker [her death cert.].  He predeceased her [her death cert.].  She died 16 Aug 1944 at Kirkmains Cottage, Crailing, Roxburghshire, age 82 [cert. as Helen].  She had natural children before her marriage:

John Tinlin.  Born 20 Apr 1885 at Crooked House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cert., CWGC].  In 1891 he was living with his grandparents John and Janett Tinlin at Crooked House Hamlet, Sprouston [cen.].  In 1901 he is probably the John Rodden living at Marlfield Farm, Coldstream, Berwickshire, working as a farm worker carter [cen.].  He married Janet Patterson on 4 Apr 1913 at The Manse, Makerston, Roxburghshire  [cert.].  She was born c. 1890 in Ladhope, Selkirkshire, daughter of Robert and Alison (Chalmers) Patterson [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was a farm servant living at Sunlawshill, Roxburgh, and she was a domestic servant living at Manorhill, Makerston [cert.].  At one time they lived at 11 Bilton’s Court, Morpeth, Northumberland [CWGC].  He was in the 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and had served for eight years of active duty, including in Egypt and India, and then was in the reserves for 3 1/2 years before being called up for war duty [CWGC, The Scotsman, 1 May 1915, page 10].  He died 18 Apr 1915, age 29, bur. in Ypres Memorial Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium [CWGC, SCVL, GRO War Deaths].  At the time of his death, she was living at Manorhill, Kelso [The Scotsman].  She married 2nd, her cousin, Matthew Willis Patterson on 28 Mar 1918 in Edinburgh [cert.].

2b. James Tinlin.  Born 7 Jan 1887 at Crooked House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He died in 1887 in Sprouston District, age less than one year [SCVL].

3a. Charles Tinlin.  Born 11 Apr 1866 in Maxton, Roxburghshire [IGI].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Sharplaw Hinds Houses, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  He died of croup on 16 Jul 1872 at Sharplaw, Jedburgh, age 5 [cert.].

4a. William Tinline.  Born in 1870 in Jedburgh District, Roxburghshire [SCVL, cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his grandparents Charles and Helen Dickson in Rutherford Mains, Maxton, Roxburghshire [cen.].  He died of diphtheria on 20 Jun 1879 in Doorpool, Southdean, Roxburghshire, age 9 [cert.].

5a. Isabella Tinline.  Born 13 Jan 1872 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [SCVL, IGI].  She died of diphtheria on 21 Jun 1879 in Doorpool, Southdean, Roxburghshire, age 7 [cert.].

6a. John Tinlin.  Born 24 Apr 1874 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1881 he was living with his father in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in Crooked House Hamlet, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  Apparently the John Tinlin living in Kirkefield Hut, Broughton North, Peebleshire in 1901, working as a navvy at the waterworks [cen. says age 24].  Possibly the John Tinlin who died in 4th quarter 1952 in Northumberland North 1st District, age 78 [CR].

7a. Janet Tinlin.  Born 6 Jul 1877 at Hoselaw Mains, Linton, Roxburghshire [cert.].  She died of diphtheria on 26 Jun 1879 in Doorpool, Southdean, Roxburghshire, age 2 [cert.].

8a. James Tinlin.  Born 1 May 1883 at Middle Softlaw, Kelso, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He died of diphtheria on 13 Apr 1889 at Crooked House, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, age 5 [cert.].

2. William Tinline.  Born c. 1839 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1841 he was living with his mother in Crailing, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his mother and step-father in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his mother in Dolphinston, Oxnam, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as a road labourer [cen.].  He married Agnes Mitchelhill on 23 Oct 1866 in Hownam, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  She was born 28 Feb 1841 in Cavers, Roxburghshire, daughter of Robert and Margaret (Bogg) Mitchelhill [IGI, cen., death cert.].  They were living in Oxnam, Roxburghshire in 1868, 1870, 1872, 1877, and in Edgerston, Roxburghshire in Jun 1874 [IGI].  In 1871 they were living in Bush Year (?) Houses, Edgerston, and he was working as a parish road serviceman [cen.].  He died 20 Aug 1879 at Overton Bush, Edgerston, age 40 [MI, SCVL].  In 1881 she was living in Oxnam, Roxburghshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Edgerston, Roxburghshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her brother at Camptown, Edgerston, working as a housekeeper [cen.].  She died 20 Aug 1923 at Hawthorn Cottage, Denholm, Roxburghshire, age 82 [cert., MI].  They had children:

1a. Robert Tinlin.  Born 7 Nov 1867 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire [IGI, cen. says Oxnam].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Bush Year (?) Houses, Edgerston [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his mother in Oxnam [cen].  In 1891 he was living in Newbattle, Edinburgh, working as a blacksmith [cen.].  He married Ellen Wales on 31 Dec 1895 in Edinburgh [cert.].  She was born c. 1871 in England, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Baillie?) Wales [marr. cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage he was living in Cambuslang, working as a blacksmith, and she was living in Edinburgh [cert.].  They were in South Africa by 1899 [NASA].  He was in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles [MI].  He died on active service on 7 Jan 1902 at Standerton, South Africa [MI].  She later remarried [NASA].

2a. Margaret Tinlin.  Born 8 Dec 1869 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire [IGI].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Bush Year (?) Houses, Edgerston [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her mother in Oxnam [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1891.  She married 1st James Tolleth on 24 Nov 1896 in Glasgow [cert.].  He was born c. 1839 in Perth, Perthshire, son of David and Ellen (Boyd) Tolleth, and was a widower [marr. cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Pirtie (?) Street, Glasgow, working as a dyer-cleaner, and she was living in Camptown, Jedburgh [cert.].  In 1901 they were living at 21 Harcourt Drive, Glasgow Springburn and he was working as a French cleaner [cen. (she listed as Maud)].  He died before 1912 [her marr. cert.].  She married 2nd William Wilson Smith on 6 Aug 1912 at 102 Parson Street, Glasgow [cert.].  He was born c. 1862, son of William and Mary (Wilson) Smith [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 282 Buchanan Street, Glasgow, working as a mercantile clerk, and she was living at the same address [cert.].  She died 21 Feb 1935 at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, age 65 [cert.].  At the time of her death, he was a retired railway clerk, and they lived at 18 Broughton Street, Edinburgh [her death cert.].

William Mitchelhill Tinlin.  Born 5 May 1871 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire [IGI and SCVL, cen. – says Oxnam].  In 1881 he was living with his mother in Oxnam [cen.].  In 1891 he was living in Newbattle, Edinburgh, working as a general labourer [cen.].  In Dec 1895 he was a witness at his brother Robert’s marriage in Edinburgh [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his sister in Glasgow Springburn, working as a hops hooper [cen.].  He married Euphemia Learmonth (Learmouth?) in 1906 in Minto District [SCVL].  In Nov 1908 they were living in Blacklea, Hobkirk, and he was working as a woodman [daughter’s death cert.].  In 1923 and 1928 they were living at Blackley, Bonchester, Hawick, (Hobkirk Parish), Roxburghshire and he was working as a woodman or forester [various death certs.].  He died in 1955 in Hobkirk District, age 84 [SCVL].  She died in 1967 in Hobkirk District, age 87 [SCVL].  They had children:

Isabella Tinlin.  Born 28 Jun 1874 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire [IGI, cen. says born in Oxnam].  In 1881 she was living with her mother in Oxnam [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Edgerston, Roxburghshire and was working as a general servant [cen.].  In Sep 1896 she was living in Camptown, Jedburgh, working as a domestic servant [son’s birth cert.].  She married John Scott in 1899 in Edgerston District [SCVL].  She died 30 Dec 1928 at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, age 54 [cert.].  Her husband survived her and was living at Darling Field, Gordon at the time of her death [cert.].  She had a natural son:

William Tinlin.  Born 26 Sep 1896 in Camptown, Jedburgh [cert.].  His marriage certificate lists his father as William Tinlin, roadman, deceased (while also stating that his mother’s maiden name was Isabella Tinlin) [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his grandmother Agnes Tinline at Camptown, Edgerston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  He married Elizabeth Jane Scott on 23 Jun 1928 at St. Andrew’s N.F. Manse, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  She was born c. 1899, daughter of Robert and Janet (Dill) Scott [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was a journeyman blacksmith, she was a hosiery presser, and they were both living at 1 Kirke Street, Hawick [cert.].  He died in 1965 in Hawick District, Roxburghshire, age 68 [SCVL].  She died in 1986, age 86 [SCVL (no district listed)].

5a. John Oliver Tinlin.  Born 1877 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL].  In 1881 he was living in Oxnam with his mother [cen.].   In 1891 he was living with his mother in Edgerston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  He died 28 Sep 1901 in the Darlington Fever Hospital, North Yorkshire, age 24, bur. Darlington West Cemetery [CR, MI].

3. Isabella Tinlin.  Born c. 1841 in Crailing, Roxburghshire [cen., SCR].  Chr. 19 Sep 1841 in the Associate Congregation or Free Church, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [SCR].  In 1851 she was living with her mother and step-father in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her mother in Dolphinston, Oxnam, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as a domestic servant [cen.].  She had a natural son christened in Oxnam, Roxburghshire in Feb 1862, his “reputed father” being Walter Elliot [IGI, son’s marr. cert.].  She married William Laidlaw on 24 Jun 1870 in Overton Bush, Edgerston, Roxburghshire [cert.]. He was born c. 1845 in England, son of Alexander and Isabella (Oliver) Laidlaw [cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage he was living in Messburnford, Jedburgh and was working as a telegraph foreman and she was living in Overton Bush, Edgerston Parish, working as a farm servant [cert.].  In 1871 she was staying with her mother in Edgerston [cen.].  In 1881 they were living at Blackley Cottage, Hobkirk, Roxburghshire and he was working as a woodman [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Blackley, Hobkirk, and he was working as a hedger [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at Blackley Cottage, Hobkirk, and he was working as a hedger [cen.].  He predeceased her [her death cert.].  She died 10 Jun 1907 at 4 Wilton Crescent, Hawick, Roxburghshire, age 64 [cert.].  She had a natural son:

1a. Robert Tinlin.  Born 16 Feb 1862 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire, natural son of Isabella Tinlin, probably by Walter Elliot [IGI, marriage cert.]. He was apparently the Robert Tinling living with his grandmother Isabella (Oliver) Drummond in Bush, Edgerston, Roxburghshire in 1871 [cen.].  He came to Rulewater about 1879, and worked at Cleuchhead and at Wolfelee as a hedger [Rulewater and Its People].   In 1881 he was living in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire, nephew of Alexander Drummond, working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  He married Agnes Jessie Davidson Minto on 4 Apr 1890 at Wolfelee Lodge, Southdean, Roxburghshire [cert., IGI].  She was born 26 Apr 1864 in Southdean, Roxburghshire, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Telfer) Minto of Wolfelee, Jedburgh [IGI, cen., Rulewater and Its People].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Cleughhead, Hobkirk, working as a ploughman, and she was living at Wolfelee Lodge, Southdean [cert.].  In 1891 they were living in Braidhaugh, Hobkirk, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].   In May 1897 they were living in Braidhaugh, and he was working as a woodman [son’s birth cert.].  In 1901 they were living in Hobkirk, and he was working as an estate labourman [cen.].  In Jun 1907 he was living at Blacklea, Hobkirk [mother’s death cert.].  He died in 1919 in Hobkirk District, age 57 [SCVL].  She died in 1936 in Hobkirk District, age 72 [SCVL under Jessie].  They had children:
