The Tinling Family of Haltwhistle, Northumberland

 

William Tinling.  Living in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland in 1691 [reg.].  He is apparently the William Tinling, Senior of Broomhouses, Bellister Lordship, Haltwhistle who was bur. on 21 Apr 1721 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He had a daughter and probably a son:

1. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 21 Jan (?) 1692 in Plainmellor, Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She married William Bell on 13 Jul 1713 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Fotherstone (Featherstone) and she was living in Broomhouses, both in Haltwhistle [reg.].

2. [probably] Thomas Tinling.  He married Ann(e) Mulcaster on 18 Jan 1719 at St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumberland, when he was living in Stanwix and was a gentleman [license, reg.].  They were living at Broomhouses, Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland from at least Mar 1720 [reg.].  He was a churchwarden and overseer of the poor in 1722, and a churchwarden in 1742 [reg.].  He left an administration dated 24 Jan 1749 at which time he was a yeoman at Broomhouses [MP].  He drowned crossing a swollen river in 1749 [NCL].  He was bur. on 18 Jan 1750 in Haltwhistle Parish, at which time his residence was still Broomhouses [reg.].  She was bur. on 12 Nov 1761, at which time her residence was Broomhouses [reg.].  They had children:

1a. Jane Tinling.  Chr. 14 Mar 1720 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She married 1st William White on 24 May 1743 in Haltwhistle Parish [IGI].  He was the son of ______ and Elizabeth White [MP (his will)].  They lived in Plenmeller, Haltwhistle Parish [MP (his will)].  He died (will dated 27 Apr 1745) [MP].  She married 2nd George Armstrong on 19 Jul 1748 in Warden, Northumberland [IGI].  He was chr. 21 Nov 1711 in Haltwhistle, son of John and Isabell (Little) Armstrong [IGI].  They lived in Haltwhistle and attended the Presbyterian church there [IGI].  He died 5 May 1783 and was bur. 7 May 1783 in Haltwhistle, when his residence had been Mekridge (?) [IGI, BT].

2a. William Tinling.  Chr. 4 Apr 1722 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was living at Broomhouses in 1766 when he was a churchwarden for Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was living at Broomhouses in 1777 [reg.].  He rented a farm and a mill stone quarry at Broomhouses for over 20 years, and was bailiff for Bellister Manor [MP, probate of will].  He left a will dated 29 Aug 1792, at which time he was a yeoman at Broomhouses [MP].  He is the William Tinling, Senior of Park, Haltwhistle who was bur. on 20 Jan 1795 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg., probate of will].

3a. Edward Tinling.  Chr. 8 Jun 1724 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was a churchwarden for Haltwhistle Parish in 1767 [reg.].  Apparently the Edward Tinling who signed a will dated 3 Nov 1769 [MP].  He was living at Broomhouses in 1777 [reg.].  He was bur. on 15 Aug 1789 in Haltwhistle Parish, at which time his residence had been Broomhouses [reg.].  His will was proved 22 Jan 1790 [MP].  He apparently died childless, as he left all his estate to his siblings [MP].

4a. Isabell Tinling.  Chr. 7 Nov 1726 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She is apparently the Isabell Tinling of Broomhouses who was bur. on 10 Feb 1731 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].

5a. Ann Tinling.  Chr. 6 Nov 1728 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  She married Moor Laycock on 21 Dec 1762 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was a servant of Henry Ellison and a 1757 letter mentions him buying a small estate in Knaresdale, Northumberland [MP].  In 1766 they were living in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [IGI].  In 1768 and 1771 they were living in Gateshead, Durham [IGI].  In c. 1797 she was living in St. Andrew, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a widow [probate of brother William’s will].

6a. Thomas Tinling.  Born c. 1732 [calc., MP].  He is mentioned in the wills of his brothers William and Edward [MP].  He married Hannah Coatsworth on 6 Jun 1762 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time, his residence was Haltwhistle Parish and hers was Nether Warden [reg.].  She was born in Nether Warden c. 1733 [MP, calc.].  They were living in Park (-Houses), Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland in Apr 1763, Apr 1765, Jan 1768, Jul 1769, May 1772, Jul 1775 [IGI, reg.].  Living in Park in Apr 1777 and Apr 1781 [reg.].  In c. 1797 he was living at The Park, Haltwhistle, and was a yeoman [probate of brother William’s will].  He died 12 Dec 1812 in Haltwhistle, age 80, and was bur. there on 15 Dec 1812 [reg.].  She died at age 84, and was bur. 27 May 1817 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg].  At the time of their deaths, both were living in Haltwhistle Town, and his occupation was listed as joiner [reg.].  They had children:

1b. Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 2 Apr 1763 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Probably the Thomas Tinling who was a witness at the marriage of Thomas Armstrong of Haltwhistle and Sarah Robson in Ryton Parish, Durham on 29 Jan 1787 [printed trans. of reg.].  In the late 1790’s he was living at Park, Haltwhistle [A2A].  He was living in Haltwhistle Parish from Nov 1810 through Apr 1821 [reg.].  In 1815 he was a miller in Haltwhistle [A2A].

2b. William Tinling.  Chr. 19 Apr 1765 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He married Jane Winter on 5 Sep 1795 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was a joiner [reg.].  They were living in Haltwhistle Parish in Jan 1796, May 1797, Apr 1799 and in Hexham Parish in Apr 1805 [reg.].  She is probably the Jane Tindling who was bur. on 5 Dec 1824 in Hexham Parish, age 48 [reg.].  They had children:

1c. Jane Tinling.  Chr. 17 Jan 1796 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Probably the Jane Tinling living in Wark, Northumberland in Dec 1822 who had a natural child there [BT].  She may be the Jane Tinling who married John Dunn on 7 Jul 1828 in Gateshead Parish, Durham [BT].  She had a natural child:

1d. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 1 Dec 1822 in Wark Parish, Northumberland, daughter of Jane Tinling [BT].  In 1841 she was living with her uncle and aunt Alexander and Hannah Turner in Morpeth, Northumberland working as a servant [cen.].

2c. Hannah Tinling.  Chr. 28 May 1797 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She married Alexander Turner on 21 Jun 1817 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [trans. of reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Hexham Parish [trans. of reg.].  He was born c. 1784 in Hexham, Northumberland [cen.].  They were living in Morpeth, Northumberland in c. 1823 [cen.].  In 1841 they were living in Briggs Street, Morpeth and he was working as a publican [cen.].  In 1851 they were living at the Turk’s Head Inn, Market Place, Morpeth, and he was the innkeeper [cen.].  Possibly the Hannah Turner who died in 3rd quarter 1852 in Morpeth District [CR].  In 1861 he was working as a hostler at the Bridges Inn, Castle Square, Morpeth, a widower [cen.].  He died in 2nd quarter 1864 in Morpeth District [CR].

3c. Mary Tinling.  Born 8 Apr 1799 and chr. 21 Apr 1799 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].   She married 1st William Urwin on 16 Feb 1819 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  In 1841 she was living with her sister Hannah in Morpeth, Northumberland, apparently a widow [cen.].  She married 2nd Samuel Bell on 26 Jul 1843 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, when he was a widower and she a widow [BT].  He was chr. 27 Jun 1790 in Blaydon, Durham, son of Nicholas Bell [BVRI, cen., IGI].  In 1851 they were living in Tynemouth and he was a steamboat owner [cen. (he as Samuel Carter Bell, she as Edith Mary Bell)].  In 1861 they were living at 249 Bedford Street, Tynemouth and he was a publican [cen.].

4c. Thomas Tinling.  Born 16 Oct 1801 [BT].  He was chr. 28 Apr 1805 in Hexham, Northumberland [BT].   Possibly the Thomas Tinling who was a witness at his sister Mary’s wedding in Hexham in Feb 1819 [(or would he have been too young?), reg.].  He is probably the Thomas Tinling who married Mary Spoor on 24 Aug 1828 at All Saints, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland [BT].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in All Saints Parish [BT].  She was born 12 May 1802 in Ryton, Durham, daughter of Michael and Margery (Harding) Spoor [PH].  He was a joiner [children's birth records].  He died 6 Jan 1832, bur. 7 Jan 1832 in St. Andrews, Newcastle-on-Tyne [Edinburgh Medical Journal, BT].  They had children:

1d. Mary Ann(e) Tinling.  Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and chr. at St. Andrew's there on 21 Mar 1828 [cen., BT].

2d. William Tinling.  Born c. Jul 1830 [Edinburgh Medical Journal, BT].  He was bur. 20 Feb 1833 in Newburn, Northumberland, age 2 and 1/2 years [BT].

3d. Thomas Michael Tinling.  Born posthumously and chr. 9 Sep 1832 in Newburn, Northumberland [BT (as Tinley)].

5c. Ann(e) Tinling.  Born 7 Jan 1804 in Hexham, Northumberland and chr. there 28 Apr 1805 [BT, cen.].  She was chr. 28 Apr 1805 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [BT].  Living (as Ann Tindling) in Hexham Parish in Sep 1825 [reg.].  She married James Hara on 6 Jun 1831 in Heworth Parish, Durham [IGI, Newcastle Courant, 11 Jun 1831].  He was born c. 1810 in Newcastle [cen.].  In Nov 1837 they were living in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and he was working as a brushmaker [BT (St. Andrew's)].  In 1841 they were living in Foster Court, Pilgrim Street, All Saints, Newcastle and he was working as a journeyman brushmaker [cen.].  In 1851 and 1861 they were living in All Saints, Newcastle and he was working as a brushmaker [cen.].  She is probably the Ann Hara who died in 4th quarter 1865 in Newcastle [CR].  In 1871 he was living in All Saints, Newcastle, a widower, working as a brushmaker [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his son in St. Andrew, Newcastle, a widower, working as a brushmaker [cen.].  He died in 4th quarter 1881 in Newcastle, age 71 [CR].  She had a natural daughter before her marriage:

1d. Eleanor Tindling.  Chr. 18 Sep 1825 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Not listed with her mother in 1841 [cen.].

6c. George Tinling.  Bur. on 18 Sep 1806 in Hexham, Northumberland, probably an infant [reg.].

3b. Anne Tinling.  Chr. 3 Jan 1768 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She was bur. on 29 Jun 1768 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].

4b. Edward Tinling.  Chr. 16 Jul 1769 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He married Jane Dodd on 1 Oct 1791 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was a yeoman [reg.].  They were living in Widon Eals, Haltwhistle Parish in Nov 1791, Hill House Close, Halwhistle in Mar 1793, Dec 1794, in Featherstone Row Foot, Haltwhistle in Nov 1797, Apr 1799 and in Haydon Bridge Parish, Northumberland in May 1804, Sep 1806, Nov 1808 [reg.].  He worked as a stone mason in Haydon Bridge Parish [reg.].  They were witnesses at their daughter Ann’s wedding in Hexham Parish in 1818 [reg.].  He arrived in New York City in 1822, age 52 [P&I, cen.].  He was in Kings Co., New Brunswick by 1824, when he submitted a land petition [LAC].  In 1838, he was listed as a mason [son’s marriage cert.].  On 7 Jul 1840 he was granted 100 acres in Sussex, Kings Co. [LAC].  She apparently died before 1851 [cen.].  In 1851 he was living in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick, a gentleman, lodging with Nathaniel and Ann Johnson [cen.].  He died 7 Jun 1854, age 86 [New Brunswick Genealogical Society Newsletter (1989), pg. 53].  They had children:

1c. William Tinling.  Chr. 19 Nov 1791 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

2c. Ann Tinling.  Chr. 20 Mar 1793 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].   She married Robert Ridley on 26 Dec 1818 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [trans. of reg.].  At the time, he was living in Hexham Parish, and she was living in Haydon Bridge, Warden Parish [trans. of reg.].  They are not listed in the 1851 or 1861 census index for England.  A Robert Ridley, age 54, was buried 10 May 1845 in Hexham and another, age 67, was buried there on 26 Jul 1849 [FHO].

3c. Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 26 Dec 1794 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was a joiner in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland when he had a natural daughter by Hannah Pringle [reg. (Simonburn)].  Living in Simonburn Parish, Northumberland in Oct 1815 [reg.].  He immigrated to Canada in 1820 [cen.].  In 1820 he and William Freeze submitted a land petition in Kings Co., New Brunswick [LAC].  On 22 Jan 1822 he was granted 1000 acres in Sussex, Kings Co. [LAC].  He married Rachel Bonnell on 16 Mar 1837 in Sussex, Kings Co., New Brunswick [reg. copy].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Sussex [reg. copy].  She was born c. 1812 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick, and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 27 Apr 1856, age 59 [New Brunswick Genealogical Society Newsletter (1989), pg. 53].  He left a will in Kings Co., New Brunswick in 1856 [Internet].  The 1861 census for Studholm does not appear to have survived.  In 1867, "Mrs. Thomas Tinling's widow" was listed as living at Keirstead Mountain, Millstream, Kings Co., New Brunswick, a farmer [Hutchinson's dir.].  In 1871 she was living in Studholm, Kings Co. [cen.].  A Rachel Tingley, widow, age 67, was living in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick in 1881 [cen.].  He had a natural daughter by Hannah Pringle and all other children by his wife:

1d. Alice Tinlin [by Hannah Pringle].  Born in Sep 1815 near Westerhall, Simonburn Parish, Northumberland and chr. 5 Oct 1815 in Simonburn Parish [reg., BT].  She was bur. 8 Oct 1815 in Simonburn Parish, Northumberland [BT].

2d. Edward Tinling.  Born c. 1838 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].

3d. Mary Tinling.  Born c. 1840 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].  She married William Sharp in 1860 in Kings Co., New Brunswick [LAC].  He was born c. 1824 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Springfield, Kings Co., New Brunswick and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 they were living in Studholm and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  Among other children, they had a son named Stanley Tinling Sharp [cen., Anc.].

4d. John Tinling.  Born c. 1841 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].

5d. William Tinling.  Born c. 1844 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].

6d. Amanda Tinling.  Born c. 1845 in Studholm, New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her mother in Studholm [cen.].  She married Thomas J. Mabee [son's cen. record (1925 Iowa)].  He was born in Canada [cen.].  Cannot locate on 1881 or 1891 Canadian census [cen.].  However, their son was born c. 1859, so something does not match up correctly here.

7d. Thomas Tinling.  Born c. 1848 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.]. 

8d. Isaac Tinling.  Born c. 1850 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.]. In 1867 he was listed as a farmer in Fenwick, Millstream, Kings Co., New Brunswick [Hutchinson's Dir. (as Tingling)].  In 1871 he was living with his mother in Studholm [cen.].  Not listed in Kings Co. in 1881 or 1891 [cen.].

9d. Annie Tinling.  Born in Jun 1854 in New Brunswick [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her mother in Studholm, Kings Co., New Brunswick [cen.].  She immigrated to the U.S. in 1870 (or apparently shortly afterwards) [cen.].  She married her cousin William Tinling Horton on 16 Dec 1873 in Sussex, Kings Co., New Brunswick [IGI, SV].  He was chr. 26 May 1844 in Penn, Staffordshire, son of William Hughes and Elizabeth (Tinling) Horton [IGI].  In 1880 he was living with his parents in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., Vermont, was married, but his wife was not with him [cen.].  In 1900 they were living with his brother in St. Johnsbury and he was working as a bookkeeper in a shop [cen. says he was born in May 1843].  In 1910 she was living with her brother-in-law in St. Johnsbury, a widow [cen.].  She was not living with him in 1920 [cen.].

4c. Hannah Tinling.  Chr. 11 Nov 1797 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

5c. Edward Tinling.  Born 6 Apr 1799 and chr. 13 Apr 1799 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Not listed in England in 1851 [cen.].

6c. Humphrey Dodd Tinling.  Born 25 May 1804 in Lees, Haydon Bridge Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He had a (apparently natural) daughter by Ann Makepeace in Carrshield Parish, Northumberland in Dec 1825 [IGI, MP].  He married Elizabeth Parker on 13 Dec 1828 in Allendale, Northumberland [IGI].  She was born 28 Oct 1805 in Housty, Allendale, daughter of William and Isabella (Parker) Parker [MP, IGI].  In 1841 they were living in Catton, Allendale, and he was working as a lead ore miner [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Railway Terrace, Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he was working as a railway labourer [cen.].  He died 4th quarter 1859 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, MP].  In 1861 she was living in Elswick, a widow, and was a retired grocer [cen.].  In 1871 she was living in Elswick [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1872 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 69 [CR].  On his children’s marriage certificates in the 1860’s, he was listed as a labourer [cert.].  He had a natural daughter by Ann Makepeace and the remaining children by his wife:

1d. Jane Tinlin [by Ann Makepeace].  Chr. 11 Dec 1825 in Carrshield, Allendale Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  Probably the Jane Makepeace living in Barney Craig, Allendale in 1841 [cen.].  She is probably the Jane Makepeace who married Thomas Whitfield on 11 Oct 1845 in Ninebanks, Northumberland [IGI].  In 1851 they were living in Herring Well, Allendale; he was working as a cartman and she as a housekeeper [cen.].  In 1861 she was living in Herring Well listed as a lead miner’s wife, but he was not listed with her [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Carrshield, Allendale and he was working as a cartman [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in Low Craig, Alston, Cumberland, a widow, and a farmer of 150 acres [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Blue Row, Allendale; a widow with no occupation [cen.].

2d. John Tinling.  Chr. 7 Feb 1830 in Catton Low Foot, Allendale Parish, Northumberland [IGI, MP].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Catton, Allendale [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was unmarried, and was working as a railway labourer [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his mother in Elswick, was unmarried, and was working as an engine driver [cen.].  He married Rebecca Pack on 26 Aug 1867 in St. Peter, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cert.].  She was born c. 1836 in Brampton, Cumberland, daughter of John and Jane Pack [cen. (some entries say born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne), mar. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was working as a engine driver [cert.].  In 1871 they were living in Elswick, Northumberland and he was working as a railway engine driver [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Elswick, Northumberland and he was working as a platelayer [cen.].  In 1886 they were living at 6 Railway Terrace, Newcastle, and she was keeping a shop [dir.].  In 1891 they were living in Elswick and he was working as a hand packer [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Elswick and he was working as a locomotive hand packer [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Newcastle District [cen. index].  He died 3rd quarter 1913 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 83 [CR].  She died 2nd quarter 1923 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 84 [CR].  They had children:

1e. Elizabeth Jane Tinling.  Born 1st quarter 1873 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen., CR].  In 1881 and 1891 she was living with her parents in Elswick, Northumberland [cen.].  She married Frank Bottomley in 3rd quarter 1898 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  He was born c. 1874 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, possibly son of Harry and Jane Bottomley [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Elswick, and he was working as a leather finisher [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen. index].

2e. John Nicholas Tinling.  Born 4th quarter 1875 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 he was living with his parents in Elswick, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Elswick and working as a labourer in a brass foundry [cen.].  He died 2nd quarter 1901 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 25 [CR].

3e. Edward Tinling.  Born in Sep 1878 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen., MP].  In 1881 and 1891 he was living with his parents in Elswick, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Elswick, working as an iron moulder [cen.].  In 1911 he was living in Newcastle District [cen. index].  He (or the son of Nicholas and Margaret Tinling) died in 1st quarter 1917 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 39 [CR].

3d. Margaret Tinling.  Chr. 10 Jan 1819 in Haydon Bridge Parish, Northumberland [reg., BT].  In 1841 she was living with her sister Elizabeth in Upper Penn, Staffordshire, and was working as a servant [cen.].  She married her sister Jane's widower, Walter McAllister, on 10 Oct 1859 in Kings Co., New Brunswick (see above) [Internet (from the Religious Intelligencer newspaper)].  At the time, they were both residing in Springfield, Kings Co. [Internet].  In 1861 and 1871 they were living in Springfield, Kings Co. and he was working as a blacksmith and farmer [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her nephew/step-son Walter in Springfield, a widow [cen.].  She was not listed with them in 1891 [cen.].

12c. Elizabeth Tinling.  Chr. 14 Oct 1821 in Haydon Bridge Parish, Northumberland [reg., BT].  In 1841 she was living with her sister Margaret in Upper Penn, Staffordshire, and was working as a schoolmistress [cen.].  She married William Hughes Horton on 15 Aug 1843 in Penn, Staffordshire [CR, IGI, cen., SV, MP].  He was born in 1819 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, son of John Horton [SV, cen., MP].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Upper Penn and he was working as a tailor [MP].  They were living in Penn in 1844-47 [IGI].  They immigrated to the United States in 1850 [cen.]. In 1850 they were living in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts and he was working as a tailor [cen.].  In 1860 they were living in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., Vermont and he was working as a merchant tailor [cen.].  In 1870 they were living in St. Johnsbury and he was working as a tailor and owned a furnishing store [cen.].  In 1880 they were living in St. Johnsbury and he was working as a merchant tailor [cen].  He died in 1895 [SV].  She was apparently deceased by 1900 [cen.].

5b. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 13 May 1772 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  She married Matthew Lee on 24 Aug 1799 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time, his residence was Kirkhaugh Parish, Northumberland and hers was Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  They were living in Kirkhaugh in 1800-12 [IGI under Tindling].  They were both apparently deceased by 1841 [cen.].

6b. Ann Tinling.  Chr. 2 Jul 1775 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  Living in Halthwhistle Parish in Nov 1801 [reg.].  She married William Sutton on 25 Jun 1803 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  They were living in Haltwhistle at least through Apr 1806 [IGI].  She had a natural daughter before her marriage:

1c. Ann Tinling.  Born 30 Oct 1801 and chr. 15 Nov 1801 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland, daughter of Ann Tinling, “single woman” [reg.].  She was also chr. 27 Feb 1804 in Farlam Parish, Cumberland [IGI].  She married Robert Birney on 28 Mar 1829 in Farlam Parish [IGI].  He was chr. 9 Mar 1808 in Farlam, natural son of Elizabeth Birney [cen.].  They had children born in Farlam Parish from 1829-46 [IGI].  In 1851 they were living in Crosscotes, Farlam and he was working as a quarry man [cen.].  He died in 1st quarter 1853 in Brampton District, Cumberland (which includes Farlam) [CR].  In 1861 she was living in Crosscotes, Farlam, a widow [cen., specifies birthplace as Haltwhistle].  She is probably the Ann Birnie who died in 1st quarter 1864 in Brampton District, Cumberland [CR].

7a. John Tinlin.  Chr. 13 Mar 1734 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was not listed in his brother Edward’s will, proved in 1790 [MP].
