The Tinline Family of Hawick, Roxburghshire
John Tinlin. Married Agnes Broun [reg.]. In 1669, he was
a weaver in Hawick [reg.]. He is listed in Hawick in Mar 1686, and for the last
time in Jul 1697 [reg.]. In 1694 he donated money towards a town bell [Annals
of Hawick]. They had children:
1. Robert Tinlin. Chr. 29 Mar 1672 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg. as Tinla]. Married Christian Purdome [SCR]. He was a weaver [reg.]. In 1697, he "was fined for publicly, in the face of the haill incorporation of weavers, giving John Swan, present quartermaster, ane lie, and farther fined when personally charged by Robert Rewcastle, present bailie, and his officer at his backe, to goe to prison, when he most insolently and contumaciously disobeyed, and wold not stirr ane foot" [Wilson, "Hawick and Its Memories", page 27 (from the Hawick Council Records)]. He was still living in Hawick in Mar 1725 [reg.]. They had children:
1a. Thomas Tinlin. Born and chr. 2 Nov 1701 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR says Feb 1702]. Probably the Thomas Tinlin who married Jenet Liddell (or Riddel) on 13 Nov 1719 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. He could be the Thomas Tinnline, weaver, who was a witness to a christening in Hawick in 1737 [reg.]. They had children:

3. Thomas Tinlin. Chr. 4 Feb 1677 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. He married Bessie Dryden on 31 Jul 1701 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. He was a weaver in Hawick in Nov 1701 [reg.]. They had children:
1a. Jean Tinlin. Born and chr. 17 May 1702 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. Living in Hawick in Jun 1724 [reg.]. She married Thomas Aitkin [reg.]. They had children in Hawick in the 1720's-1730's, but he was always called Robert. He was a wright [reg.]. She was bur. in Hawick on 13 Jun 1777 [reg.].

7. Walter Tinlin. A weaver in Hawick in Oct 1715, probably a grandson (but possibly a son) of John and Agnes (Broun) Tinlin [reg.]. He married Anne Tinlin on 8 Dec 1723 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire and on 27 Dec 1723 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR]. She was the daughter of John Tinline of Kirklands, Ancrum (see her entry in the TINLINE of ANCRUM family) [reg.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living in Hawick and she was living in Ancrum [reg.]. He was bur. 18 Oct 1761 in Hawick [reg.]. They had children:
1a. Christian Tinlin. Chr 28 Mar 1725 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. She is apparently the Christian Tinlin who married ______ Langlands [SCR]. In 1761 they were living in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR].
2a. John Tinline. Chr. 23 Apr 1727 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.].
3a. Ann Tinlin. Chr. 10 Jul 1729 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. Possibly the Ann Tinlin who married Robert Ferquarson on 18 Jun 1757 in Hawick [SCR]. They were living in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire in 1758-59 [SCR as Farguson].
4a. Robert Tinlin. Chr. 12 Jun 1737 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. He married Margaret Turnbull on 21 Jun 1760 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. He is probably the Robert Tinlin who was the "impatient and eccentric beadle" of Hawick Kirk, mentioned in a funny story in a biography of Dr. Samuel Charters [Fifeshire Biography, page 114]. She was bur. 11 Nov 1792 in Hawick [bur. index]. He died in 1815 [Wilson, "Hawick and Its Old Memories"]. They had children:
1b. Ann Tinline. Chr. 16 Oct 1761 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. She married Adam Kerswell [SCR (Internet says John Kersel)]. In 1796 they were living in Hawick [SCR]. In 1841 she was living in Fore Row, Hawick, and was apparently a widow (listed under her maiden name) [cen.].
2b. William Tinlin. Chr. 21 Aug 1763 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR].
3b. Walter Tinlin. Chr. 25 Oct 1766 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. He apparently died young as a younger sibling was given the same name.
4b. Walter Tinline. Chr. 16 Aug 1767 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. He is almost certainly the Walter Tinline who married Jane Oliver [Tombstone Inscriptions in Berwickshire]. She was born c. 1782 [calc.]. He was a fisherman in Dryburgh, Mertoun Parish, Berwickshire [ibid.]. She died 7 Jul 1835, age 53 [ibid.]. He died on 13 Feb 1838, age 61, and was bur. at Dryburgh Abbey [ibid. (thus born c. 1767)]. There were no Tinlines listed in Mertoun Parish in 1841 [cen.].
5b. John Tinlin. Chr. 12 Jan 1775 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. A John Tinlin was listed as a stockingmaker in Hawick in 1797 and 1799, and as a constable in Hawick in 1801 [LBR]. In 1841 he was living in Fore Row, Hawick, working as a woolen hose sorter [?] [cen.]. Probably the “stockingmaker of Hawick, Roxburghshire, died on 30 Jan 1844” [Wilson’s register of Hawick deaths]. There is an inventory for him at the Jedburgh Sheriff Court dated 5 May 1845 [Internet].
5a. Agnes Tinlin. Chr. 20 Oct 1744 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. She married Charles Wilson on 7 Dec 1771 in Hawick [SCR]. They were living in Hawick in 1772 [SCR]. She apparently died in Jun 1820 in Hawick [bur. index].

In 1841 they were living in Nags Head Close, Jedburgh, and he was working as a shoemaker journeyman [cen.]. He predeceased her [her death cert.]. In 1851 she was living at 38 Castle Street, Jedburgh, a widow, working as a washerwoman [cen.]. In 1861 she was living at 18 Castle Street, Jedburgh, a fundholder [cen.]. She died 3 Jul 1865 at 33 Canongate, Jedburgh, age 89 [cert.].
Ann Tinline. Born c. 1807 in Scotland [calc.]. She married William Kyle [SCR]. In 1832-54 they were living in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR, cen. (cannot locate on 1841 or 1851 census)]. They were in Canada by 1841? Cannot locate on 1851 Canadian census. In 1861 they were living in Goderich, Huron Co., Ontario and he was working as a joiner [cen.]. In 1871 they were living in Reach, North Ontario Co., Ontario and he was working as a pattern maker [cen.]. In 1881 they were living in Goderich, Huron Centre Co., Ontario [cen.]. In 1891 she was living in Wingham, Huron East Co., Ontario, a widow [cen.]. She died 26 Jan 1897 in Dundas, Wentworth Co., Ontario, a widow, age 89 [cert.].
Custer Tinlin. [Probably misreading of name]. Bur. 24 Dec 1766 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.]. [Esther? (or the 1st Walter, son of Robert and Margaret (Turnbull) Tinlin?]
Isabel Tinlin. Married John Grierson on 14 Dec 1758 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [SCR]. They were living in Hawick in 1760-72 [SCR]. She was bur. 28 Dec 1795 in Hawick [bur. index].
Walter Tinline. Married Mary Elder before c. 1778 [daughter’s death cert.]. He was a journeyman shoemaker [daughter’s death cert.]. She died (or was bur.) on 4 May 1824 in Hawick [bur. index]. They had children:
Mary Tinline. Born c. 1778 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [death cert. (1841 cen. says 1781-86, 1851 says 1788, 1861 says 1785)]. She married Walter Rae before 1821 [death cert., cen.]. He was born c. 1784 in Hawick [cen.]. In 1841 they were living in Hawick Kirk Wynd, Hawick and he was working as a shoemaker [cen.]. In 1851 they were living in Slitrig Crescent, Hawick and he was working as a journeyman shoemaker [cen.]. In 1861 they were living at 12 Slitrig Crescent, Hawick and he was working as a shoemaker [cen.]. She died 26 Jun 1862 at 12 [unreadable (apparently Slitrig)] Crescent, Hawick, Roxburghshire, age 83 [cert.].
Also, the Tinlin families of Langholm, Dumfriesshire may be descended from the Hawick family (Langholm is about 23 miles down the main road from Hawick).
