The Tinling Family of Hayton, Cumberland


Thomas Tinling.  Married Nell ______ [reg.].  She was buried __ Aug 1623 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  He was buried 20 Aug 1646 in Hayton [reg.].  They were almost certainly the parents of:

1. John Tinling.  He married 1st Joneta (?) ______  in Feb 1648 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg. unreadable].  She was bur. 22 Feb 1657 in Hayton [reg. unreadable (first name appears to end in “s”)].  He married 2nd Janet ______ [reg.].  She was bur. 11 Feb 1672 in Hayton [reg.].  He was bur. 16 Jan 1698 in Hayton [reg.].  He had a son by his first wife and four children by his 2nd wife:

1a. Thomas Tinling [by 1st wife].  He apparently died young [reg.].  He was bur. 13 Oct 1652 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

2a. Thomas Tinling [probably by 2nd wife].  He apparently died young [reg.].  He was bur. 22 Feb 1657 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

3a. William Tinling.  Chr. 2 Apr 1665 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  He married Isabel ______ [reg.].  They were living in Hayton, Cumberland in Sep 1690, Nov 1692, Feb 1694, Dec 1697, Mar 1702, Apr 1707, Mar 1708 [reg.].  She was bur. 14 Mar 1721 in Hayton [reg.].  He was bur. 23 Jun 1721 in Hayton [reg.].  [It is possible he had a first wife named Eleanor (see below)].

1b. Mary Tinlin.  Chr. 28 Sep 1690 in Hayton, Cumberland and on the same date in Castle Carrock, Cumberland [IGI (lists as a son in Castle Carrock), reg.].  She married Thomas Lowson on 3 Nov 1712 in Hayton [reg.].

2b. Sarah Tinlin.  Chr. 27 Nov 1692 in Hayton, Cumberland and on the same date in Castle Carrock, Cumberland [IGI (as Tintin in Castle Carrock), (Hayton) reg (date cut off)].  She was living in Hayton in Mar 1730 [reg.].  She had a natural daughter:

1c. Mary Tinlin.  Chr. 1 Mar 1730 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

3b. Dorothy Tinlin.  Chr. 7 Feb 1695 in Hayton, Cumberland, and also in Feb 1695 in Castle Carrock, Cumberland [reg., IGI].  She was bur. 31 Mar 1747 in Hayton, apparently unmarried [reg.].

4b. John Tinlin.  Chr. 26 Dec 1697 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  He signed his will on 15 Apr 1763 [will].  He was bur. 19 Apr 1763 in Hayton [reg.].  His will was proved 2 Jul 1768 [will].  His (unnamed) wife survived him [will].  He had children:

1c. John Tinlin.  Chr. 19 Dec 1723 in Hayton Parish, Cumberland [reg.].  He is not mentioned in his father’s 1763 will.

2c. Mary Tinlin.  Chr. 16 May 1725 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  She married Thomas Bell on 27 Dec 1752 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Hayton [reg.].  He was born c. 1718 [calc.].  He was a hatter [reg.].  He was bur. 3 Nov 1781 in Hayton, age 63 [reg.].  She is called Ann in her father’s 1763 will.

5b. Joseph Tinlin.  Chr. 27 Mar 1702 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  He was bur. 30 Mar 1702 in Hayton [reg.].

6b. William Tinlin.  Chr. 21 Mar 1703 in Hayton Parish, Cumberland [reg. (exact day cut off), IGI has 21 Mar 1702 (which is old style)].  He was living in Flats, Hayton, Cumberland in Jun 1728 [reg.].  He had children:

1c. Anne Tinlin.  Chr. 16 Jun 1728 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  She may be the Ann Tinlin of Hayton Town Head, who was bur. 12 May 1768 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

7b. Christopher Tinling.  Chr. 6 Apr 1707 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

8b. Jane Tinlin.  Chr. 20 Mar 1709 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.]. 

4a. Nell Tinling.  Chr. 24 Feb 1667 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].

5a. Jane Tinling.  Chr. 31 Jan 1669 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  She was bur. 6 Mar 1675 in Hayton [reg.].

Other Hayton individuals:

______ Tinling.  Bur. __ Aug 1623 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  First name appears to be either Richardus or Josephus.

Janet (?) Tinling.  Married Johannis (?) Walker (?) on 7 Sep 1645 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg., looks like Jenesta Tinling].

Margaret Tinling.  Married George Warwiske (?) on 9 Oct 1645 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg. – her last name has a hole in the middle “Tin___g”].

Eleanor Tinling.  Bur. 26 Jan 1700 in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].  At the time of her death, she was living in ffaugh [reg.].  She may have been an unmarried adult [reg.].  [See William Tinling above].

George Tinlin.  Living in Hayton Parish, Cumberland in Apr 1717 [IGI].  He could be the George Tinling, yeoman, of Brampton, Cumberland, who left an administration in 1686 [Carlisle wills index].  He had children:

1. John Tinlin.  Chr. 17 Apr 1717 in Hayton Parish, Cumberland [reg.].

Ann Tinling.  Married Robert Holliday on 6 Feb 1769 at Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumberland [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was a widower living in St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, and she was a spinster living in Hayton, Cumberland [reg.].
