The Tinling Family of Kelso, Roxburghshire
The following individuals were probably siblings and thus
the children of Thomas Tinlin, a labourer [son Andrew’s marr. cert.]:
1. Andrew Tinlin(e)(g). Born c. 1793 in Stichill Parish, Roxburghshire [marr. cert., BSD]. He was a labourer by trade [BSD]. Attested to the service on 14 Aug 1815 at Kelso, Roxburghshire, age 22 [BSD]. He was then 5'11" tall, had a fair complexion, red hair and blue eyes [BSD]. He had a natural son by Margaret Stevenson in c. 1819-20 in Kelso [cen., son’s marriage cert.]. She was born c. 1803 in Lessudden, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire [cen. (not in IGI)]. At first he was a Trooper (Private), then he was promoted to Corporal of Horse on 10 Apr 1833 [BSD]. He was in the 1st Regiment, Life Guards [BSD]. He left the service on 15 Feb 1840 at age 46 1/2 because of a diseased testicle and impaired general health contracted in the service [BSD]. “His conduct has been that of a good, efficient and trustworthy soldier” [BSD]. Probably the Andrew Tinlin who was a witness at the marriage of Margaret Tinlin and Thomas Bell in 1834 in Kelso [reg.]. He married 1st Mary Bristol on 11 Jan 1821 at St. Mary's, Battersea, London [reg.]. She was born c. 1800 [death cert.]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in St. Mary's Parish [reg.]. In Dec 1822 and Dec 1824 they were living at Swallow Street, London [children's chr. rec.]. In Jun 1826 they were living at Union Place, London [son's bur.]. In 1828 they were living at "the Barracks" in London [daughter's chr. rec.]. She died of consumption on 28 Nov 1838 at their residence, 29 Edward Street, Regents Park, London, age 38 [cert.]. In 1841 he was living in Dinton, Wiltshire and was an Army Pensioner [cen.]. He married 2nd Mary Ann Baker on 23 Aug 1841 in Dinton, Wiltshire [cert.]. She was born c. 1803-4 in Dinton, the daughter of John Baker, a blacksmith [cert., calc., not in IGI]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Dinton, and he was working as a servant (?) [cert.]. In 1851 they were living in Dinton and he was a pensioner [cen.]. In 1861 they living in Dinton and he was a Chelsea Pensioner [cen.]. He died 2nd quarter 1863 in Wilton District (Wiltshire) [CR]. She was living in Dinton, Wiltshire in 1871 and 1881, a widow, working as a dressmaker [cen.]. She died 1st quarter 1884 in Wilton District (Wiltshire), age 80 [CR]. [Name spelled Tinlen in most places]. He had a natural son Charles by Margaret Stevenson, three children by his first wife and one by his second:
1a. Charles Tinline or Tinling. Born c. 1820 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [marriage and death certs.]. In 1841 he was living in Easter Softlaw, Sprouston, Roxburghshire (as Charles Tinling), working as an agricultural laborer [cen.]. In 1851 he was living in Gateshaw, Morebattle, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as a coachman [cen.]. He married Janet Trotter on 12 Dec 1856 in Gateshaw, Morebattle [cert.]. At the time, they were both living in Gateshaw, he was working as a coachman and she as a dressmaker [cert.]. She was born c. 1828 in Eccles, Berwickshire, daughter of William and Alison (Allan) Trotter [cert., cen.]. In 1861 they were living in Morebattle and he was working as a coachman and gamekeeper [cen. as Charles Tinling]. In 1871 they were living in Branxholm Park, Hawick, and he was working as a coachman [cen.]. In 1881 they were living in Roberton, Selkirkshire and he was working as a coachman [cen.]. In 1891 they were living at 72 Old Town, Peebles, Peebleshire and he was a retired coachman [cen.]. He died 28 Aug 1897 at 18 Younger Street, Peebles, Peebleshire, age 78 [JR, cert.]. In 1901 she was living as a boarder at 4 St. Michaels Wynd, Peebles, a retired housekeeper [cen.]. She died in 1907 in Peebles District, age 84 [SCVL]. He had a (natural?) son:
1b. James Tinlin. Born c. 1840-2 in Sprouston or Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen., marr. cert.]. In 1851 he was visiting Elisabeth Cairns in Wideopen, Morebattle, Roxburghshire [cen.]. In 1861 he was living in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire, working as a coachman for John Given, Minister [cen.]. He married Catherine Scott on 19 Feb 1867 at the Registrar's Office, Sunderland, Durham [cert.]. She was born c. 1840-2 in Carham, Northumberland, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Scott [cen., Anc.]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Cousin Street, Bishopwearmouth, and he was working as a carter [cert.]. They lived in Sunderland, Durham in 1868 and in Scotland around 1869 - 1873 [children's birthplaces on censuses]. In 1871 they were living in Kelso, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a carter [cen.]. In Jul 1872 he was convicted in Kelso of embezzlement and sentenced to one month's imprisonment [Newcastle Courant, 12 Jul 1872]. They lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, from about 1876 [cen., CA]. In 1881 they were living in Newcastle and he was working as a cartman for a corporation [cen.]. In 1891 they were living in Byker, Newcastle, and he was working as a cartman [cen.]. In 1898 they were living at 13 Scott Street, Newcastle, and he was working as a cartman [dir.]. In 1901 they were living in Byker, Newcastle, and he was working as a general carter [cen.]. She died 1st quarter 1905 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 64 [CR]. She married Thomas Edward Baister in 4th quarter 1891 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR]. He was born in 1st quarter 1865 in Darlington, Durham, son of John and Martha (Bailey) Baister [cen., CR]. In 1901 they were living in Westgate, Northumberland and he was working as a hairdresser [cen.]. In 1911 they were living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen. index].
2c. Charles Tinlin. Born 2 Mar 1869 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen., CA]. In 1871 he was living with his parents in Kelso [cen.]. In 1881 he was living with his parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle, working as a commercial clerk [cen.]. He married Marguerite Elizabeth Bright in 1st quarter 1893 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.]. She was born in 4th quarter 1870 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, daughter of John and Elizabeth Bright [cen., CR]. In 1898 they were living at 116 Cardigan Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he was working as a commercial traveller [dir.]. In 1901 they were living in Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and he was working as a commercial traveller [cen.]. In 1910 they were living in Riverton, Sangamon Co., and he was working as a traveling salesman [cen.]. In Oct 1911 she arrived in New York from Quebec with her two daughters [Anc.]. In 1920 she was living in Springfield, Illinois, and was listed as married, although her husband was not with her [cen.]. Have not located him on 1920 census index. He died in the 1920’s [cen.]. In 1930 she was living in Springfield, Illinois and was a widow [cen.]. She died 28 Apr 1943 in Springfield [VR]. They had children:
1d. Norman Tinlin. Born 24 Mar 1895 in Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen., Anc., draft card]. In 1901 he was living with his parents in Heaton [cen.]. He immigrated to the United States on 30 Sep 1904 on the ship Carpathia [cen., EI]. In 1910 he was living with his parents in Riverton, Sangamon Co., Illinois [cen.]. In Jun 1917 he was working as a watchmaker for the Illinois Watch Company [Anc.]. In 1920 he was living with his mother in Springfield, Illinois, when he was single [cen.]. He married Edna Kern in c. 1924 [cen., daughter’s obit.]. She was born c. 1906 in Illinois, daughter of _____ and Augusta Kern [cen.]. In 1930 they were living in Springfield, Illinois and he was working as a salesman [cen.]. In Apr 1942 he was living in Springfield with a Mrs. Malissa Tinlin and he was working as a salesman [draft card]. He died 18 Nov 1943 in Springfield, age 47 [VR]. She married 2nd Cleve Askins [JA]. 2e. Norma Jean Tinlin. Born 4 Dec 1930 in Springfield, Illinois [obit.]. In 1947 she was living in Springfield, working as a file clerk [dir.]. She married Walter Eugene Ingram in 1950 in Springfield, Illinois [Internet, her obit.]. He was born 10 Oct 1930, son of Walter and Alice (Perry) Ingram [Internet]. She died 14 Sep 2003 in Springfield, Illinois [obit.]. Her husband survived her [obit.].
2d. May Tinlin. Born 2nd quarter 1897 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.]. In 1901 she was living with her parents in Heaton, Newcastle [cen.]. She immigrated to the United States on 30 Sep 1904 on the ship Carpathia [cen., EI]. In 1910 she was living with her parents in Riverton, Sangamon Co., Illinois [cen.]. In 1920 she was living with her mother in Springfield, Illinois and was single [cen.].
3d. Jeannette "Jennie" Rutherford Tinlin. Born 6 Oct 1905 in Riverton, Sangamon Co., Illinois [cen., Internet, Anc.]. In 1910 she was living with her parents in Riverton, Illinois [cen.]. In 1920 she was living with her mother in Springfield, Illinois [cen.]. In 1930 she was living with her mother in Springfield, Illinois, was single, and was working as a stenographer [cen.]. She arrived in New York from Southampton on 7 Aug 1939, at which time she was unmarried [Anc.]. She married George C. Lofy [Internet]. He was born 17 Jul 1903 in Illinois, son of Peter and Lucy J. (Reisch) Lofy, and worked as a railroad mechanic [cen., Anc., Internet]. He died 20 Mar 1980 [Internet (not in SS)]. She died 22 Jun 1995 in St. Joseph’s Home, Springfield, Illinois [SS, Decatur, IL Herald and Review, 23 Jun 1995]. They were both bur. in Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois [Internet]. They had no children [Anc.].

3c. Thomas Tinlin. Born 29 Jun 1870 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen., CA]. In 1871 he was living with his parents in Kelso [cen.]. In 1881 he was living with his parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle, working as a printer compositor [cen.]. He married Annie Ingram in 2nd quarter 1890 in Gateshead District (Durham) [CR]. She was born c. 1869 in Staffordshire [cen.]. Cannot locate on 1891 census. In 1901 they were living at 8 Brock Street, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he was working as a printer comp. [cen.]. In 1911 they were living in Newcastle [cen. index under Linlin]. In 1916 he was living at 154 Malcolm Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, working as a compositor [dir.]. He died in 4th quarter 1937 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 67 [CR].
1d. Annie Tinlin. Born 12 Jan 1902 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, RH]. In 1911 she was living with her parents in Newcastle [cen. index]. She moved to South London in c. 1929 and worked as a domestic servant [RH]. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Army at the outbreak of war in September 1939 [RH]. She was promoted to full corporal and received the general war medal and the 1939-45 service medal [RH]. In the mid-1960’s she moved to Swindon, Wiltshire [RH]. She died unmarried in 3rd quarter 1980 in Swindon [RH, CR].
4c. Catherine Tinlin. Born 26 Apr 1872 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [SCVL, IGI, cen., CA]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1891 and 1901 she was living with her parents in Byker, Newcastle [cen.]. In 1911 she was living in Hexham District, Northumberland [cen. index]. Possibly the Catherine Tinlin who died in 1st quarter 1966 in Northumberland South District, age 94 [CR].
5c. Margaret Tinlin. Born 1st quarter 1876 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen., IGI, CA]. In 1881 she was living with her parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen]. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. She married Joseph Kidd on 22 Nov 1899 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, CA]. He was born c. 1871 in Byker, Northumberland, son of Robert H. and Mary Kidd [cen.]. In 1901 they were living in Walker, Northumberland and he was working as a railway engine driver [cen.]. They were living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1911-18 [CR].
6c. James Tinlin. Born 1st quarter 1880 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen., IGI]. In 1881 he was living with his parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen]. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1901 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle, and was working as a merchant’s clerk [cen.]. In 1911 a James "Trilin", born c. 1880 in Newcastle, was listed in an institution of some kind in St. Pancras, London [cen. index]. He died in 1st quarter 1964 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 83 [CR].
7c. Archibald Knox Tinlin. Born 2nd quarter 1882 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, CA]. In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1901 he was listed as being an “imbecile feebleminded” [cen.]. He died in 4th quarter 1957 in Northumberland South District, age 74 [CR].
8c. Joan Tinlin. Born 3rd quarter 1885 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR]. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.]. In 1901 she was living with her parents in Byker, Newcastle and was working as a draper’s cash girl [cen.]. She married Robert Pool in 4th quarter 1909 in Chelsea District (Middlesex) [CA, CR]. He was born c. 1877 [cen. index]. In 1911 they were living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen. index].
2a. Thomas Daniel Tinlen. Born 10 Nov 1822 and chr. 18 Dec 1822 at St. James, Westminster, London [reg.]. He died of smallpox, age 3 and 1/2, and was bur. 17 Jun 1826 at St. Luke's, Chelsea [reg.].
3a. Jane Tinlin. Born 26 Nov 1824 and chr. 30 Dec 1824 at St. James, Westminster, London [reg.]. She married Thomas Arnold on 3 Apr 1849 at St. Mary’s Church, St. Marylebone, London [cert., DSC]. He was born c. 1824 in Poole (?), Dorset and chr. 5 Mar 1824 at Great Canford, Dorset, son of John and Elizabeth (Oxford) Arnold [marr. cert., DSC]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in St. Mary’s [cert.]. They were living in Regents Park, London in 1850 [DSC]. They immigrated to Durban, Natal, South Africa shortly afterwards (not listed on 1851 census in England) [DSC]. He died in Durban in 1875 [DSC]. She died 16 Aug 1892 in Greytown, Natal, South Africa [DSC].

5a. Emma Tinlen. Born 1st quarter 1843 in Wilton, Wiltshire [CR]. She died 1st quarter 1843 in Wilton [CR].
2. John Tinline or Tinling. Born c. 1794 in Scotland [calc., cen., 1825-30 census would put his birthdate in 1801-10 area]. Apparently a sibling of Margaret and Andrew Tinlin(e). He married Margaret Wright on 18 Feb 1823 in Argyle, Washington Co., New York [cen., JH]. She was chr. 23 Apr 1797 in Argyle, New York, daughter of Thomas and ______ (McNaughton) Wright [WNY, cen.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living in Putnam and she was living in Argyle [JH]. They were living in Putnam, Washington Co., New York in 1825 and 1830 [cen.]. There was one alien living in the household at both times [cen.]. They moved to Canada in c. 1831-34 [calc.]. In 1851 they were living in Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. In 1861 and 1871 they were living in Dumfries South, Brant Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. He died 22 Jun 1880 in South Dumfries Twp., Ontario, age 85 [cert.]. In 1881 she was living in South Dumfries, North Brant Co., Ontario, a widow [cen.]. She died on 9 Jan 1886 in South Dumfries Twp., Ontario [ODR, 8 Jan 1886 per JH (cert. not located)]. They were bur. in Ayr Cemetery, Ayr, Waterloo Co., Ontario [OCFA]. They had children:

He was born c. 1815-16 in New York State and had been previously married [death cert., Internet]. He was a farmer [death cert.]. She died on 14 Jan 1850 near Paris, South Dumfries Twp., Ontario [JH, NM]. He died 1 Mar 1876 in South Dumfries, Brant Co., Ontario, age 60 [cert.].
2a. Margaret Thompson Tinling. Born 16 Mar 1826 and chr. 14 May 1826 in Putnam, Washington Co., New York [cen., JH, death cert., WNY (under Finland)]. In 1861, 1871 and 1881 she was living in South Dumfries, North Brant Co., Ontario [cen.]. In 1901 she was living with the Maus family in South Dumfries [cen.]. She died unmarried on 7 Sep 1903 in Blenheim, Ontario, age 78, bur. in Ayr Cemetery, Ayr, Waterloo Co., Ontario [cert., OCFA].
3a. Robert Tinling. Born 12 Apr 1829 in (almost certainly Putnam, Washington Co.,) New York [cen., JH]. He was not listed with his parents in 1851 [cen.]. He married Helen "Hannah" Hall on 4 Nov 1857 [cen., JH]. She was born in Jun 1834 in Scotland [cen., JH]. In 1861 they were living in Waterloo, Waterloo Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. They were the first settlers in the town of Blairsburg, Hamilton Co., Iowa in c. 1869-70 [Internet]. In 1870 they were living in Blairsburg Twp., Hamilton Co., Iowa, and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. In 1880 they were living in Military Twp., Winnesheik Co., Iowa, and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. She died 26 Nov 1888 [JH]. He died 7 Feb 1900 in Seattle, Pierce Co., Washington [JH, cert. In 1880 he was living with his parents in Military Twp., Winnesheik Co., Iowa, and was working as a telegraph operator [cen.]. He married Julia Mary “Brownie Belle” Gridley on 25 Dec 1886 [cen., JH]. She was born Dec 1866 in Minnesota [cen. (1880 says Pennsylvania)]. He lived in Miles City, Montana in 1885, when he left a manuscript autobiographical statement now at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library [have copy]. Living in Montana in Aug 1890 [cen.]. In 1890 and 1891 he was listed in the St. Paul, Minnesota city directory as a traveling agent with the “CStPM&O” railway in St. Paul and Helena, Montana [dir.]. Living in Minnesota in Feb 1892 [cen.]. In 1900 they were living in Washburn, Bayfield Co., Wisconsin, and he was working as a railroad superintendant [cen.]. Cannot locate in 1910 census index. In Jan 1920 they were living at 6029 Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, Illinois, and he was the bureau manager for a steam railroad [cen.]. In 1930 they were living in Chicago and he was working as a department superintendent for the railroad [cen.]. He died 11 May 1943 in Riverside, Cook Co., Illinois [IR]. She died 9 Mar 1957 in Riverside, Illinois [JH]. They had children:
1c. Jean Milton Tinling. Born 18 Feb 1888 in Stillwater, Minnesota [JH]. He died 24 May 1888 [JH].
2c. Gladys Helen Tinling. Born 15 Aug 1889 in Miles City, Custer Co., Montana [JH, cen.]. In 1900 she was living with her parents in Washburn, Bayfield Co., Wisconsin [cen.]. She married John Mack Hood on 12 Oct 1909 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee [IGI]. He was born in 1884 in Murray, Calloway Co., Kentucky [Internet]. In 1920 they were living at 704 Main Street, Alamosa, Alamosa Co., Colorado and he was working as the manager of a J.C. Penney store [cen.]. She died 21 Feb 1964 in Denver, Colorado [JH]. He died in 1982 [Internet].
3c. John “Jack” Creighton Tinling. Born 6 Feb 1892 in St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota [JH]. In 1900 he was living with his parents in Washburn, Bayfield, Wisconsin [cen.]. In Jun 1917 he was living at 4917 Magnolia Ave. in Chicago, Illinois, working as a mechanic [Anc. – says born in Memphis, Tennessee]. He moved to New York and changed his name [JH].
4c. Theodore Robert Tinling. Born 10 Jan 1899 in Bayfield Co., Wisconsin [cen. says Jan 1898, SS]. In 1900 he was living with his parents in Washburn, Bayfield Co., Wisconsin [cen.]. In Sep 1918 he was living in Chicago and was a student [Anc.]. He served in World War I [cen.]. He was living with his parents in Chicago, Illinois in Jan 1920 and had no occupation [cen.]. In 1930 he was living with his parents in Chicago, was single, and working as a civil engineer [cen.]. He died 31 Jul 1969 in Denver, Colorado [SS, JH].
5c. Virginia Tinling. Born c. 1903 in Washington (state) [cen.]. In 1920 she was living with her parents in Chicago, Illinois [cen.]. In 1930 she was living with her parents in Chicago and was single [cen.]. She died 23 Mar 1972 in Denver, Colorado [JH]. [Possibly married ______ Austin, and thus born 11 Sep 1902? (SS)].
2b. Robert Alexander Tinling. Born 31 Jan 1861 in Waterloo, Ontario [cen.]. He came to the U.S. in 1864 [cen.]. In 1870 he was living with his parents in Blairsburg Twp., Hamilton Co., Iowa [cen.]. In 1880 he was living with his parents in Military Twp., Winnesheik Co., Iowa [cen.]. He married Margaret Young on 24 Oct 1889 in Bureau Co., Illinois [cen., CS, JH, IGI]. She was born 3 Jan 1862 in Illinois, daughter of Peter J. and Mary (Klein) Young [cen., calc., VR (for death)]. In 1890-93 he was living in Spokane, Washington, working as a freight and ticketing agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad [Anc.]. In 1900 they were living in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington [cen.]. In 1915 they were living in Beresford (by then in Lincoln Co.) and he was retired [state cen.]. In 1920 they were living in Beresford and had no occupation [cen.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living in Blenheim, a widower, working as a farmer, and she was living in North Dumfries [reg. trans.]. In 1891 and 1911 they were living in Blenheim and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. He died 22 Sep 1916 in Blenheim, age 92 years, 5 months and 4 days [cert.]. His wife survived him [cert.].

In 1881 they were living in Dumfries North, Waterloo South Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. In 1901 they were living in Galt, Waterloo South Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. She died 3 Apr 1911 in Ayr, Waterloo Co., Ontario, age 71 [cert.]. Her husband survived her [cert. (not listed in Ayr in 1911)].
3. Margaret Tinlin. Born 14 Oct 1805 in Scotland [SB]. Apparently a sister of the John Tinlin(e) who married Margaret Wright. She married Thomas Bell on 29 May 1834 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [reg.]. He was born 15 Oct 1809 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire [SB, Internet]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Kelso Parish [reg.]. He was working as a blacksmith at Maseridge [Mauridge?], and she was a servant [reg.]. Andrew Tinlin was a witness at their marriage [reg.]. They emigrated to the U.S. shortly after their marriage, settling first in Vermont, then (by 1837) in North Argyle, Washington Co., New York [SB]. Not listed in Vermont or New York in 1840 [cen.]. He died in North Argyle in 1848 [SB]. She was living there in 1850 [cen.]. In 1860 she was living in South Fork, Delaware Co., Iowa [cen.]. In 1870 she was living with two of her children in Indianola, Warren Co., Iowa [cen.]. She died 1 Jun 1878 [SB].
