The Tinling Family of Kirklinton, Cumberland

Richard Tinling.  Married Anne ______ [reg.].  They were living c. 1651-66 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg.].  She was bur. 24 Apr 1672 in Kirklinton Parish, at which time their abode was Hethersgill [reg., BT].  He was bur. 20 May 1699 in Kirklinton Parish [reg.].  They had children:

1. [Wil]liam Tinling.  Chr. c. 1651-56 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg., part missing].  Married Ann ______ [reg.].  Living in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland in Nov 1683, Mar 1685 [BT, reg.].  She was bur. 10 Sep [?] 1729 in Kirklinton Parish, at which time their residence was Ash [reg.].  They had children:

1a. David Tinling.  Chr. 4 Nov 1683 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland, son of William [and Ann] Tinling [BT].

2a. Margaret Tinling.  Chr. 14 Mar 1685 (as Margrett) in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland, daughter of William [and Ann] Tinling [BT, reg. (does not have day and month)].

2. David Tinling.  Chr. 3 Oct 1654 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg].  Married Jane ______ [reg.].  He was living in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland in May 1676 (in Hethersgill), Jan 1679 (in Loming), May 1681, Jan 1687, Dec 1693, Jan 1697 [BT].  He was one of a group of men granted authority on 13 Mar 1683 to deal with problems with foreigners in the parish [reg.]. She was bur. 9 Mar 1723 in Kirklinton Parish, at which time their abode was Hethersgill [reg., BT]. He was living in Ash, Kirklinton Parish in Apr 1733 [reg., BT].  He was listed in an evaluation of the commoners of Kirklinton Parish as living in Ash c. 1739 [reg.]. He was a yeoman [will].  He was a householder in Ash in Hethersgill at the time of his death [reg.].  He was bur. 29 Apr 1743 in Kirklinton Parish [reg.].  [One daughter married Richard Warwick (or at least had a daughter by him)].  They had children:

1a. Anna Tynling.  Chr. 11 Oct 1676 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT].  She is possibly the Anne Tinling who was presented by the Kirklinton churchwardens in 1709 “for Adultery with one George Warwick of Stare (?) in the Parish of Irthington” [BT].  This may be a mistake for Richard Warwick, by whom one of David Tynling’s daughters had a child (and Richard Warwick was recently married at that time).

2a. Richard Tinling.  Chr. 29 Jan 1679 (new style) in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT].  Living in Ash, Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland in Jul 1710 [reg., BT].  He is not listed in his father’s 1743 will, but his son Daniel is [father’s will].  He had a natural son:

1b. Daniel Tinling.  Chr. 9 Jul 1710 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg., BT].  He married Mary Graham on 29 Nov 1734 in Kirklinton Parish [reg., BT].  They were living in Kirklinton Parish in Mar 1735, Nov 1736 (in Ash), Mar 1742 (in Ash in Heathersgill), Jan 1744 (in Hethersgill Leaming or Loaning), Jul 1746, Feb 1749 (in Whormire?), Mar 1751 [reg., BT].  They had children:

1c. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 17 Mar 1735 (new style) in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT – in which she is said to be illegitimate, apparently because she was born less than four months after her parents marriage].

2c. Richard Tinling.  Chr. 2 Nov 1736 (as Tynling) in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT].

3c. Henry Tin(g)ling.  Chr. 8 Mar 1742 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg., BT].  He married Ann Gordon on 24 May 1770 in St. Hilda’s, South Shields Parish, Durham [reg.].  They were living in North Shields, Northumberland in Oct 1772, Jun 1774, when he was a mariner [reg.].  They had children:

1d. Graham Tingling.  Chr. 7 Oct 1772 in Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland [reg.].  Apparently a twin with his sister Jane.

She is probably the Ann Tinling who was buried on 7 May 1822 at St. Paul Shadwell, age 73 [reg., thus born c. 1749].  They had children:

1d. [by Anne Porrit] Mary Tinling.  Chr. 24 Mar 1767 in Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland [IGI under Finling].

2d. Ann Tinling.  Born 15 Apr 1779 and chr. 9 May 1779 at St. Paul, Shadwell, London [reg.].

5c. Daniel Tinling.  Chr. 1 Jul 1746 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg., BT (most of entry torn off)].  In Jan 1772 and Jul 1775 he was living at Ratcliffe, London, working as a shipwright [children's chr.].  At the time, his wife's name was Ann.  But he is probably also the Daniel Tinling who married Eleanor ______ [BT].  In May 1783 he was a Customs House Official, living in North Shields, Northumberland [BT].  His wife (Eleanor) was bur. 8 May 1783 in Tynemouth, Northumberland [BT].  He had a natural daughter:

(hard to read)].  He was bur. 30 Sep 1775 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney [reg. (although it could also be his father, since no ages or parents' names were given)].

4d. Eleanor Tinling.  Chr. 15 Jul 1775 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, London [reg. (as Elionor)].  Twin with her brother Daniel [reg.].

6c. Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 22 Feb 1749 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [reg.].  Possibly the Thomas Tinling who married Elizabeth ______ and had a daughter Eleanor in Tynemouth, Northumberland (see Dictionary).

7c. Eleanor Tinling.  Chr. 24 Mar 1751 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT].

3a. William Tinling.  Chr. 29 May 1681 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [IGI, reg., BT].  [The parish register only had “Will Son of David Tinling”, rest of page missing, apparently in the year 1684.  BT appeared to be in 1677 (year not on page).  Possibly two sons, one died young, the second with the same name.]  He was bur. 9 May 1757 in Kirklinton Parish [reg.].  At the time, he was living in Hethersgill and was noted as being poor [reg., BT].  He may have been the father of one of the Mary Tinlings.

4a. Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 26 Jan 1687 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland [BT, reg. (in which his first name is missing)].  He was living in Cleugh, Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland in Jul 1719, when he was presented by the churchwardens of Kirklinton for fornication with Anne Greyson of Castleton Parish [reg., BT].  He married Jane Nixon on 18 Apr 1721 in Kirklinton Parish [BT].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Clough [BT].  They were living in Hetherside, Kirklinton Parish in Dec 1721, May 1727, Nov 1733 [reg., BT].  At the time of his death he was living in Milltop (Hilltop - ?) and was a venaler (?) [reg., BT].  He was bur. 14 Mar 1765 in Kirklinton Parish [reg., BT].  He had a natural daughter by Anne Greyson and the remaining children by his wife:
