The Tinline Family of Kirktown, Roxburghshire


This is probably a branch of the TINLINE of ANCRUM family.

George Tinline.  Born c. 1771-76 in Roxburghshire [cen.].  Married Alison Murray [SCR].   She was born c. 1786 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [cen.].  They were living in Fairnington, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire in Mar 1805, Aug 1806, May 1808, and in Ancrum c. 1816 [reg., son’s death cert.].  He was a general agricultural labourer and ploughman [childrens’ death certs.].  In 1841 they were living in High Tofts, Kirktown, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a labourer [cen.].  He died before 1851 [cen.].  In 1851 she was living in Effledge, Kirktown, Roxburghshire, and was working as a stocking knitter, a widow [cen.].  In 1861 she was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, Roxburghshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1871 she was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, a widow [cen.].  She died in Ladhope District, Roxburghshire in 1873, age 87 [SCVL].  They had children:

1. James Tinline.  Born 27 Dec 1804 and chr. 24 Mar 1805 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg.].

2. Margaret Tinline.  Born 12 Aug 1806 in Fairnington, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg., death cert., cen.].  She married Alexander White on 17 Dec 1835 in St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh [SCR].  He was born c. 1805 in Charliton or Kilconquhar or Colinsburgh, Fifeshire [cen.].  They were living in St. Cuthbert’s and Morningside, Edinburgh in 1836-42 [SCR, cen.].  In 1851 and 1861 they were living at 16 Market Street, Edinburgh High Church, and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  In 1871 they were living at 14 Bristo Street, Edinburgh and he was working as a domestic coachman [cen.].  She died 13 Aug 1872 at No. 14, Bristo Street, Edinburgh, age 66 [cert.].  Her husband survived her, but appears to have died before 1881 [her death cert., cen.].

3. Anne Tinline.  Born 9 May 1808 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg.].

4. John Tinline.  Born c. 1813-16 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.].  He married (or had a daughter by) Helen Robson [SCR].  They were living in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire in 1838 [daughter’s cen.].  He is probably the John Tinlin, born c. 1816-21 in Roxburghshire who was living in 1841 in Milton Stable, Ancrum, Roxburghshire, working as an agricultural labourer [cen. (a Helen Robson, age 25-30 was also living in Ancrum in 1841)]. In 1851 he was living at Standhill, Ancrum, working as a farm servant [cen.].  He married 2nd Isabella Brown on 18 Apr 1852 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].  She was born c. 1827 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire [cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Ancrum, and she was living in Minto [reg.].  They were living in Minto, Roxburghshire in 1853, when he was a hind at Kairns, and in Feb 1855 [reg., IGI].  They were living in Kirktown, Roxburghshire in Sep 1857, Feb 1862, Jan 1865, Aug 1867, 1868, Nov 1870 [IGI].  In 1861 they were living in Turn, Kirktown, and he was working as a ploughman [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Newmill Railway Cottage, Kirktown, and he was working as a railway laborer [cen.].  He died 24 May 1874 at Railway Cottages, Newmill, Kirkton, Roxburghshire, age 58, at which time he had been working as a railway surfaceman [cert.].  In 1881 she was a widow living in Kirkton, Roxburghshire [cen.].  She died in 1885 in Hawick District, Roxburghshire [SCVL].  He had a daughter by his first wife and all other children by his second:

1a. Mary Tinlin(e).  Born c. 1838 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, and chr. 14 Oct 1838 in the Associate Congregation or Free Church, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [cen., SCR].  In 1841 she was living with her grandparents George and Alison (Murray) Tinline in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1851 she was living in Kirktown, Roxburghshire with her grandmother, although she is called her niece [cen.].  In 1861 she was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, Roxburghshire with her uncle William Tinlin, was unmarried, and was working as a woolen winder [cen.].  In 1871 she was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels with her uncle William Tinlin, was unmarried, and was working as a woolen millworker [cen.].  She was living in Kirktown, Roxburghshire in Oct 1873 [IGI].  In 1881 she was living with her uncle William Tinlin in Melrose and was unmarried [under Selkirkshire on census] [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her uncle in Ladhope and was a housekeeper [cen.].  In 1901 she was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, working as a housekeeper [cen.].  She died unmarried on 22 Sep 1913 at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, age 73 [cert.].  She had a natural daughter:

1b. Alison Murray Tinlin.  Born 18 Oct 1873 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire [cen., registered in 1874 in SCVL].  In 1881 she was living with her great-uncle William Tinlin in Melrose [listed on census under Selkirkshire?].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Ladhope, Selkirkshire, working as a woolen mill worker [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her mother in Galashiels and working as a wool factory worker [cen. as Alison M. Linton].  She was a woollen weaver [death cert.].  She died 20 Jan 1933 at 6 Sterling Place, Galashiels, age 59 [cert.].

2a. George Tinline.  Born 18 Jan 1853 at Kairns, Minto, Roxburghshire [reg.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Turn, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown, Roxburghshire [cen.].  Probably the George Tinline living in Birtley, Northumberland in 1881, who was born in Scotland and was then listed as single, working as a railway platelayer [cen.].  Probably the George Tinline who married (probably Janet Rutherford, but possibly Ann Bell) in 2nd quarter 1881 in Bellingham District (Northumberland) [CR].  Cannot locate in 1891 or 1901 census index.  [The George Tinline who died in South Africa in 1912?].

3a. Helen Tinline.  Born 25 Feb 1855 in Minto, Roxburghshire [IGI].  She died in 1861 in Kirkton Roxburgh District [SCVL].

4a. Alison Tinlin(e).  Born 22 Sep 1857 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Turn, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1878 she was living in the Newmill Cottage, Kirkton, and was a domestic servant [cen.].  In 1881 she was an inmate farm servant at the Combination Poorhouse in Hawick, Roxburghshire and was unmarried [cen.].  In Dec 1881 she was living at Newmill Cottages, Kirkton, working as a domestic servant [dau.’s birth cert.].  In Mar 1884 , Jul 1885, Mar 1887 and Sep 1890 she was living in Hawick, working as a wool factory worker [children’s birth certs.].  It appears that several of her children may have been the children of an Andrew Brown, wool factory worker [daughter’s marr. cert., cen.].  In 1891 they were living together with their children at 6 Round Close, Hawick [cen.].  In Oct 1893 she was living in Hawick and working as a housekeeper [son’s birth cert.].  In 1901 they were living together with their children, but were both listed as single [cen.].  She died in 1937 in Hawick District, age 79 [SCVL].  She had natural children:

1b. John Tunnah Tinline.  Born 1876 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire [cen., SCVL, IGI].  In 1881 he was living with his grandmother in Kirkton [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his uncle Robert Tinline in Hawick, working as an assistant wool spinner [cen.].  He married Helen Pennycook in 2nd quarter 1900 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  She was born c. 1875 in Scotland and had apparently been previously married to ______ Hislop [calc., daughter’s marr. cert.].  In 1901 they were living in Elswick, Newcastle and he was working as a general labourer [cen.].  In Jul 1924 they were living in Kirkcaldy, Fife, and he was working as a weighman [daughter’s marr. cert.].  He died 10 Sep 1932 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, age 56 [cert.].  She died in 1943 in Kirkcaldy District, age 68 [SCVL].  They had children:

1c. Walter Hislop Tinline.  Apparently a son of Helen Pennycook by her first husband, later adopted by John Tunnah Tinline.  He was living in Sep 1932 [father’s death cert.].  He married Magdalene Dall Campbell in 1939 in Kirkcaldy District, Fife [SCVL].  She was born c. 1913 [calc.].  She died in 1987 in Kirkcaldy District, Fife, age 74 [SCVL].

2c. Helen Tinline.  Born 4th quarter 1900 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in Elswick, Newcastle [cen.].  She married George Hogg on 21 Jul 1924 at the Union Manse, Kirkcaldy, Fife [cert.].  He was born c. 1901, son of Peter and Jane (Russell) Hogg [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was a miner living at 17 Dovecot, Vipont (?), and she was living at 51 Market Street, Kirkcaldy [cert.].  She died in 1979 in Kennoway District, Fife, age 78 [SCVL].

2b. Robert Logan Tinline.  Born 8 Apr 1878 in the Poor House, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert. from Hawick, also registered in Kirkton].  Cannot locate in 1881 [cen.].  He was not listed with his mother in 1891 [cen.].  Possibly the Robert Miller living in Langholm, Dumfries in 1881 and 1891 with the Miller family [cen.].  He married Elizabeth Beattie in 1900 in Castleton District [SCVL].  He changed his name to Robert Miller [death cert.].  In 1901 he was living at 33 Riecarton Junction, Castleton, Roxburghshire with his in-laws, and working as a locomotive stoker, but his wife was not with him [cen. (as Robert Miller)].  He died 12 Mar 1942 in Hawick, age 63 [cert.].  She survived him [his death cert.].  They had children, including James B. Miller [his death cert.].

3b. Isabella Brown Kennedy Tinline.  Born 21 Dec 1881 in the Poor House, Hawick, Roxburghshire (apparently by a man named Kennedy) [Kirkton cert., also registered in Hawick].  In 1881 she was an inmate of the Combination Poorhouse at Hawick with her mother [cen. (suggests born c. Oct 1880?)].  She died in 1883 in Torpichen District, age 2 [SCVL].

4b. Andrew Tinline.  Born 22 Mar 1884 at 2 Frank Place, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He died in 1884 in Hawick District, age less than one year [SCVL].

5b. Jane Brown Tinlin(e).  Born 14 Jul 1885 at 1 Crown Hill (?), Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in Hawick under the name Jane T. Brown [cen.].  On her marriage certificate, she listed her “reputed father” as Andrew Brown, wool factory worker, and she was using the name Jane Brown [cert.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in Hawick [cen. (as Jane Brown)].  She married John P. McMullen on 12 Apr 1907 at The Manse, Hawick [cert.].  He was born c. 1883, son of Hugh and Teresa (Rainston) McMullen [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 3 Park Street, Hawick, working as a driver for the Army Service Corps, and she was living at 18 Teviot Road, Hawick, working as a wool factory worker [cert.].

6b. Isabella Brown Tinline.  Born 13 Mar 1887 at Round Close, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in Hawick under the name Isabella T. Brown [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in Hawick [cen. (as Isabella Brown)].  She was a witness at her sister Jane’s marriage in Apr 1907 in Hawick, when she was using the name Bella Brown [cert.].

7b. Wilhelmina Brown Tinlin(e).  Born 15 Sep 1890 at 6 Round Close, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in Hawick under the name Mina T. Brown [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in Hawick [cen. (as Mina Brown)].  She died, apparently unmarried, in 1959 in Athelstaneford District, East Lothian, age 68 [SCVL].

8b. James Brown Tinline.  Born 15 Oct 1893 at 1 Crown Close, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Hawick [cen. (as James Brown)].

5a. Robert Tinline.  Born 17 Oct 1859 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Turn, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his mother in Kirkton, working as a railway laborer, and was unmarried [cen.].  In 1891 he was living at 8 Lothian Street, Hawick, working as a railway engine corter [cen. (in index under Trulene)].  In 1901 he was living with his sister Helen Turnbull and her husband at 18 Minto Place, Hawick and was working as a railway plate layer [cen.].  He probably moved to Northumberland [see England Dictionary].

6a. Helen Tinline.  Born 21 Feb 1862 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [IGI].   In 1871 she was living with her parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  She married Walter Turnbull on 24 Jun 1881 at Newmill Cottages, Kirkton [cert.].  He was born c. 1859 in Southdean, Roxburghshire, son of John and Helen (Stoddart) Turnbull [marr. cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Ashybank, Cavers, Roxburghshire, working as a ploughman, and she was living at Newmill Cottages, Kirkton, working as a domestic servant [cert.].  In 1891 they were living at Wellington Rig Hind's Cot[tage?], Kirkton, Roxburghshire, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at 18 Minto Place, Hawick and he was working as a general labourer [cen.].  He predeceased her [her death cert.].  She died 7 Jan 1938 at 50 Orchard Terrace, Hawick, Roxburghshire, age 75 [cert.].

7a. Margaret Tinlin.  Born 23 Jan 1865 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in the household of Isabella Turnbull in Hawick, Roxburghshire and working as a general domestic servant [cen.].  She was a witness at her sister Janet’s marriage in 1891 in Hawick [cert. as Maggie].  In 1891 she was living with her brother Robert in Hawick, working as a woollen weaver [cen.].  She died unmarried in 1900 in Hawick District, age 35 [SCVL].

8a. Mina Tinline.  Born 6 Aug 1867 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire [cen., IGI].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her mother in Kirkton [cen.].  She died in 1886 in Hawick District, Roxburghshire, age 19 [SCVL].

9a. Janet Tinline.  Born 30 Nov 1870 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Newmill R. Cottage, Kirktown [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her mother in Kirktown [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her brother Robert in Hawick, working as a yarn winder [cen.].  She married James Graham McCallum on 17 Apr 1891 at 8 Lothian Street, Hawick, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He was born c. 1870 in Hawick, son of William and Janet (Graham) McCallum [marr. cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 23 Wellgate Place, Hawick, working as a journeyman baker, and she was living at 8 Lothian Street, Hawick, working as a bobbin machine winder [cert.].  In 1901 they were living at 5 O'Connell Street, Hawick and he was working as a pastry baker [cen.].  She died in 1919 in Hawick District, Roxburghshire, age 49 [SCVL].

5. William Tinlin.  Born c. 1821 in Ancrum or Hawick or Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire [cen., death cert.].  In 1841 he was living at Yair Raig, Selkirk, Selkirkshire, working as a mason [cen. (in index as Finling)].  In 1851 he was living at Damside, Galashiels, Selkirkshire and was working as a mason [cen.].  In 1861 he was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, was unmarried, and was working as a mason [cen.].  In 1871 and 1874 he was living at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, was unmarried, and was working as a mason [cen., brother’s death cert.].  In 1881 he was married and living in Melrose, Selkirkshire, but his wife was not with him [cen.].  He was a mason foreman [cen., cert.].  In 1891 he was living in Ladhope, Selkirkshire, and was a retired mason [cen.].  He died on 7 Jul 1892 at 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, when he was listed as single [cert.].
