The Tinlin Family of Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland


This is probably a branch of the TINLIN of HAWICK family.

Robert Tinlin.  Married Ann Garlick on 14 May 1730 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg.].  She was chr. 10 Nov 1713 in Hartburn Parish, Northumberland, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harle) Garlick [reg.].  They were both living in Kirkwhelpington at the time of their marriage and remained there until their deaths [reg.].  In Dec 1743 they were living at The Whitehill, near Kirkwhelpington [reg.]. He was a weaver [reg.].  He was listed in tithe lists in Whelpington in 1766-69 (later lists missing), and was excused from the Easter 1769 list because his wife was sick [reg.].  She was bur. 25 May 1769 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  He was bur. 22 Jan 1782 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  They had children:

1. Ann Tinlin.  Chr. 28 Sep 1735 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [IGI].  Bur. 19 Sep 1737 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].

2. Robert Tinlin.  Chr. 23 Mar 1738 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [IGI].   Probably the Robert Tinlin who was bur. 5 Aug 1785 in Kirkwhelpington Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time of death his abode was Capheaton and he was described as a “labouring man, poor” [reg.].  [He could alternatively be the Robert Tinlin who moved to Longhorsley, Northumberland.]

3. Edward Tinlin.  Chr. 20 Mar 1740 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [IGI].  He married 1st Anne Stobbs on 8 May 1770 in Whitley Chapel, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Whitley Chapel [reg.].  She apparently died in childbirth, and was bur. 19 Apr 1771 in Whitley Chapel, at which time their residence was High Dalton [reg.].  He married 2nd Mary Bell on 5 Jun 1773 in Whitley Chapel [reg.].  She was born c. 1742 [calc.].  He was bur. 31 Jan 1827 in Whitley Chapel, age 89 [reg.].  She was bur. 27 Mar 1833 in Whitley Chapel, age 90 [reg.].  At the time of their deaths, they had been living at Dotland Fell House [reg.].  His descendants in the male line appear to have died out with the death of his great-great-grandson Edward in 1909.  He had a son by his first wife:

1a. Robert Tinlin.  Chr. 19 Apr 1771 in Whitley Chapel, Northumberland [reg.].  He married 1st Sarah Stobbs on 25 Aug 1807 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [BT].  She was born c. 1783 [bur. record].  At the time of their marriage, his residence was Hexham Parish and hers was Allendale Parish [BT].  They were living in Allendale Parish, Northumberland in Apr 1810, Aug 1814, Jul 1817 [IGI].  He was a miner and a farmer [children’s marr. certs.].  She died at age 34 and was bur. 12 Apr 1818 in Allendale [reg. trans.].  He married 2nd Elizabeth Dowson on 8 May 1822 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time, he was living in Hexham Parish, and she was living in Slaley [reg].  An Elizabeth Tinlin was a witness to their marriage [reg.].  He was a husbandman [death cert.].  In 1841 they were living at Black Hall Mill (or Hill), Lanchester, Durham, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He died 28 Dec 1845 at Black Hall Hill, Winlaton, Durham, age 75 [cert.].  She is probably the Elizabeth Tinlin who died 1st quarter 1849 in Durham District (Durham) [CR].  He had children by his first wife:

1b. Edward Tinlin.  Born c. 1810 in Allendale, Northumberland, and chr. there 21 Apr 1810 [cen., IGI].  He married Ann Coxon on 23 May 1833 in Billingham, Durham [cen., IGI under Pinlin].  She was born c. 1799-1801 in Coatham, Yorkshire [cen.].  He was a coal trimmer [cen.]. They were living in Billingham, Durham in May 1836, Nov 1838, and Oct 1841 [IGI].   In 1841 they were living in Haverton Hill, Billingham and he was working as an innkeeper [cen.].  In 1851, 1855, and 1861 they were living in Stranton, Durham, and he was working as a coal trimmer [cen., son’s death cert.].  He died 2nd quarter 1869 in Hartlepool District (Durham) [CR].  Cannot locate her in 1871 census index.  In 1881 she was living with her daughter in Stranton, Durham, a widow [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1881 in Hartlepool District (Durham), age 82 [CR].  They had children:

1c. Isabella Tinlin.  Chr. 23 May 1833 in Billingham, Durham [IGI under Linlin].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Billingham [cen. as Elisabeth].  She died 3rd quarter 1850 in Stockton District (Durham) [CR].

2c. Robert Tinlin.  Born c. 1836 in Billingham, Durham, and chr. there on 15 May 1836 [cen., IGI].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Billingham [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Stranton, Durham, when he was working as a ship carpenter [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Stranton, Durham, was unmarried, and was working as a ship wright [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1871.  In 1881 he was working as a carpenter on the S.S. Linhope, docked at Cardiff, Glamorgan and was unmarried [Internet].  He died 1st quarter 1885 in Hartlepool District (Durham), age 48 [CR].

3c. Sarah Tinlin.  Born c. 1838 in Haverton Hill, Billingham, Durham, and chr. 30 Nov 1838 in Billingham [cen., IGI].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Billingham [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Stranton, Durham [cen.].  She married 1st William Rochester on 13 Jan 1855 at Christ Church, West Hartlepool [GD, CR, cen.].  He was born c. 1830, son of William Rochester, and was a mariner [GD].  They were living in West Hartlepool in 1858 and 1860 [cen.].  He died c. 1860-61 [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Stranton, a widow [cen.].  She married 2nd Robert Shields in 1st quarter 1868 in Hartlepool District [cen., CR].  He was chr. 4 Nov 1827 in Blanchland, Northumberland, son of John and Ann (Bell) Shields [cen., IGI].  In 1871 they were living in Stranton and he was working as a wagon wright and she as a dressmaker [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Stranton and he was working as a wagon wright [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Stranton and he was a retired wagon wright while she was working as a tobacconist [cen.].  He died in 4th quarter 1895 in Hartlepool District, age 68 [CR].  In 1901 she was living in West Hartlepool, a widow, working as a tobacconist [cen.].  In 1911 she was living in Hartlepool District [cen. index].  She died in 3rd quarter 1921 in Hartlepool District, age 82 [CR].

4c. Joseph Tinlin.  Born c. 1841 in Billingham, Durham, and chr. there on 24 Oct 1841 [cen., IGI].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Stranton, Durham [cen.].  He died accidentally by a fall on 1 Apr 1855 in Stranton, Durham, age 13 [cert.].

2b. Elizabeth Tinlin.  Chr. 28 Aug 1814 in Allendale Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  She died in 1816 at age one and a half and was bur. 27 Apr 1816 in Allendale [reg. trans.].

3b. Robert Tinlin.  Chr. 28 Aug 1814 in Allendale Parish, Northumberland [IGI].  He married Jane Wright on 6 Jun 1838 in the Parish Church of Bishopwearmouth, Durham [cert.].  She was the daughter of Edward Wright, a laborer [cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Durham Lane, working as a miller, and she was living in Gray Street, both in Bishopwearmouth [cert.].  In 1841 they were living in Sunderland, Durham and he was working as a miller [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1851.  She is probably the Jane Tinlin who died 3rd quarter 1856 in Easington (Durham) [CR].  He is possibly the Robert “Tindle”, coalminer, living in Brandon, Durham in 1861 [cen., born c. 1814 in Allendale, but unmarried (no Robert Tindle was born in Allendale per IGI), a Robert Tindall, died in Easington District in 1st quarter 1881, age 64].  The following were almost certainly their children:

1c. Edward Wright Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1839 in Sunderland, Durham [CR, cen.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Sunderland [cen.].  He married Jane Ellen Shepherd on 12 May 1860 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [JR, CR, cen.].  She was born 31 Oct 1838 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, daughter of Timothy Shepherd [JR, cen.].  In 1861 they were living in Newcastle and he was working as a printer compositor [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in St. Andrews, Newcastle, and he was working as a printer [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Westgate, Northumberland, when he was working at a printer machine company [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Westgate and he was working as a printer [cen.].  In 1898 they were living at 61 Monday Street, Newcastle, and he was working as a printer [dir.].  In 1901 they were living in Westgate and he was working as a general laborer [cen.].  He died 15 Sep 1904 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 64 [JR, CR].  She could be the Jane Tinlin, age 76, living in Sunderland District, Durham in 1911 [cen. index].  She died 1st quarter 1914 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 75 [CR].  They had children:

1d. Jane Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1861 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in St. Andrews, Newcastle [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Northumberland, was unmarried, and was an unemployed general domestic servant [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Westgate, was unmarried, and was working as a domestic servant [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1901 census index.

2d. Dorothy Ann Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1863 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen. (not listed in St. Andrews reg. for 1863)].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in St. Andrews, Newcastle [cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Northumberland, working as a general domestic servant [cen.].  She married Edward Wheatley in 3rd quarter 1899 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  He was born c. 1865 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in Westgate, while he was living as a boarder in All Saints, Newcastle, working as a stone quarryman [cen.].

3d. [probably] Hannah Sheppard Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1865 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  She died 3rd quarter 1867 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age less than one year [CR].

4d. Louisa Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1866 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in St. Andrews, Newcastle [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Northumberland, working as a general domestic servant [cen.].  She married Alfred Brown in 1st quarter 1888 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  He was born c. 1865 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, son of ______ and Isabella Brown [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his mother in All Saints, Newcastle, working as a plumber [cen.].  In 1891 she was an inmate at the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Lunatic Asylum, listed as married and a plumber’s wife [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and he was working as a plumber [cen.].

5d. Sarah Ann Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1868 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in St. Andrews, Newcastle [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Northumberland [cen.].  She married John Lowdon in 3rd quarter 1890 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  He was born c. 1869 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Westgate and he was working as a butcher [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and he was working as a butcher’s manager [cen.].

6d. Robert John Tinlin.  Born c. Jun 1870 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In Apr 1871 he was living with his parents in St. Andrews, Newcastle [cen.].  He died 2nd quarter 1871 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age less than 1 year [CR].

7d. Edward Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1872 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  In 1881 he was living in Westgate, Northumberland with his parents [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in Westgate and was working as a hardwareman’s assistant [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Westgate, was unmarried, and was working as a fitter’s laborer [cen.].  He died in 2nd quarter 1909 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 38 [CR].

2c. Dorothy Ann Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1841 in Sunderland, Durham [CR].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Sunderland [cen.].  In 1861 she was living in Monkwearmouth Shore, Durham, working as a nurse [cen.].  Probably the Dorothy Ann Tinlin who died 4th quarter 1861 in Houghton (Durham) [CR].

4b. Ann Tinlin.  Chr. 5 Jul 1817 in Allendale Parish, Northumberland [IGI].   She married Thomas Golden on 7 Oct 1837 in Winlaton, Durham [cert. as Ann Tinling].  He was born c. 1808 in Ireland, son of Thomas Golden, a farmer [cert., cen.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Black Hall, and he was working as a laborer [cen.].  In 1841 they were living at Black Hall Mill (or Hill) in Lanchester, Durham and he was working as a labourer [cen. as Goulden].  In 1845 they were living at Black Hill, Winlaton [her father’s death cert.].  Cannot locate in 1851 or 1861 census index (or 1850 U.S. or 1851 Canadian census indexes).

4. Thomas Tinlin.  Chr. 8 Dec 1743 at The Whitehill, near Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg.].  He married Elizabeth Rutherford on 4 Aug 1771 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  They were both living in Kirkwhelpington at the time of their marriage [reg.].  She was born c. 1743 [calc.].  He was listed in a tithe list for Whelpington in 1787 [reg.].  He died in Mar 1823, age 79, when his abode was Whelpington, and was bur. on 21 Mar 1823 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  She died in Jul 1826, age 83, when her abode was Whelpington, and was bur. on 24 Jul 1826 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  They had children:

1a. Ann(e) Tinlin.  Born 24 Apr 1772 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [IGI].  She had banns of marriage with William Truman proclaimed three times in Nov 1791 in Kirkwhelpington, but apparently the marriage did not occur [reg.].  She married Nicholas Stokoe on 25 Nov 1793 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  He was a native of Low Warden, Hexham Parish [his daughter's chr. rec.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  She was bur. 1 Aug 1796 in Kirkwhelpington [BT].  He remarried in Kirkwhelpington in 1797 [reg.].  He was a shoemaker [his daughter's chr. rec.].

2a. James Tinlin.  Born 2 May 1774 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, and chr. at Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [IGI, reg.].  He married Ann Rutter on 7 Jun 1795 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  She was chr. 21 Jun 1772 in West Matfen, Stamfordham Parish, Northumberland, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Brown) Rutter [cen., IGI, BT].  They were Presbyterians and lived in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  He was bur. 30 Apr 1828 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  She was probably the Ann Tinling, age 65, born in Northumberland, living as an independent in Kirkwhelpington in 1841 [cen.].  In 1851 she was living in Kirkwhelpington, a widow, and a pauper (formerly mason’s wife) [cen.].  She died 2 Jan 1855 in Newton, Northumberland [Newcastle Courant, 12 Jan 1855].  They had children:

1b. Catherine Tinlin.  Born 5 Apr 1796 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland and chr. at the Bavington Presbyterian Church, Great Bavington, Northumberland [reg., IGI under Finlen].  She married William Jackson on 11 May 1818 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  He was born c. 1794 in Elsdon, Northumberland [cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Kirkheaton, and she was living in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].  They were living in Kirkheaton in 1820, in Low Angerton South Steads, Northumberland in Apr 1828 and in Lamesley, Durham in c. 1834-37 [cen., reg.].  In 1840 they were living in Heworth, Durham [cen.].  In 1841 they were living at Little Usworth, Washington, Durham, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Jesmond, Newcastle, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1861 they were living in Bulman, Coxlodge, Northumberland, and he was working as a husbandman [cen.].  He may be the William Jackson who died in 4th quarter 1870 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland), age 74 [CR].  In 1871 she was living in Bulman, Coxlodge, Northumberland, a widow [cen.].  She is probably the Catherine Jackson who died in 4th quarter 1879 in Castle Ward District, age 83 [CR].

2b. Ann Tinlin.  Born (2?) or 3 Jul 1797 (or 1794?) in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland and chr. at the Bavington Presbyterian Church, Great Bavington, Northumberland [reg., IGI under Finlen].

3b. Thomas Tinlin.  Born 1 Jan 1799 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg.].  He was a quarryman [death cert.].  He married Isabella Richardson on 25 Nov 1817 in Stannington Parish, Northumberland [BT (as Tinling)].  She was born c. 1790-95 in Bedlington, Durham [cen., calc.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Stannington Parish [BT].  They were living in Bedlington, Northumberland c. 1819 [cen.].  In May 1826 his profession was listed as yeoman [daughter's chr.].  In Jul 1838 and Mar 1840 they were living in Buckingham Street, Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he was working as a quarryman [children’s death certs.].  In 1841 and 1851 they were living in Westgate and he was working as a stone quarryman [cen.].  He died on 2 Oct 1854 at 44 Barkingham Street, Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cert.].  In 1861 she was living in Westgate, a widow [cen.].  She died 3rd quarter 1869 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 79 [CR].  They had children:

1c. James Tinlin.  Born c. 1819 in Bedlington, Northumberland [cen., marr. cert.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was working as a cooper [cen.].  He married Ann(e) Walton on 23 May 1847 at St. Mary’s Church, Gateshead, Durham [cert., cen.].  She was born chr. 27 Jan 1822 in Middleton-in-Teesdale, Durham, daughter of Miles Walton, lead miner, and his wife Mary Collinson [cen., marr. cert., BT (as Nanny)].  At the time of their marriage, he was working as a cooper, and they were both residing at Bottle Bank [cert.].  In 1851 they were living in Gateshead, Durham and he was working as a cooper [cen.].  They were living at Mulgrave Terrace, Gateshead in Oct 1854 [father’s death cert.].  In 1861 and 1871 they were living in Westgate, Northumberland, and he was working as a cooper [cen. (1871 as “Mr. John Tinlin”)].  In 1881 they were listed at St. Mary Magdalene Hospital in St. Andrew’s, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his occupation was “late cooper” [cen.].  He died 3rd quarter 1888 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 70 [CR under Tinling].

2c. Mary Ann Tinlin.  Born c. 1820 in Northumberland [cen.].  In 1841 she was living in St. Leonard Foster Lane, working as a servant in the coffee house of Theodosius Williams [cen.].  In Nov 1847 she was living at 130 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, Surrey, when she had a natural daughter by Theodosius Williams [daughter’s birth cert.].  He was born c. 1796 in Walworth, Surrey, and was a coffee house keeper [daughter’s birth cert., cen.].  In 1851 she was living in St. Giles in the Fields, London, working as a housekeeper, and was unmarried [cen.].  She married Henry Webber in 1853 at St. Phillip’s, Sydney, New South Wales [AVRI].  In 1865 she was living in Rushcutters Bay, Sydney [Anc.].  She had a natural daughter:

1d. Louisa Jane Williams Tinlin.  Born 8 Nov 1847 at 130 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, Surrey, natural daughter of Mary Anne Tinling and Theophilus Williams [cert.].  Her birth certificate gives her surname as Williams, but she usually used Tinlin [cert., cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her Tinlin grandparents in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen. (listed as their daughter)].  In 1861 she was living with her grandmother in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  She arrived in Sydney, Australia on the “Himalaya” on 3 Mar 1865, age 17, a dressmaker [Anc.].  A Louisa Webber married Rand Morrow in 1881 in Sydney [NSW].  A Louisa Jane Morrow (daughter of Henry and Mary) died in 1937 in Burwood District, NSW [NSW].

3c. Anne Tinlin.  Born c. 1822-3, and chr. 28 May 1826 at St. Andrew’s, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [calc., BT].  She died unmarried on 5 Mar 1840 in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 17 [cert.].

4c. Elizabeth Tinlin.  Chr. 28 May 1826 at St. Andrew’s, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [BT].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  She married Stephen Oliver Graham in 2nd quarter 1850 in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, NRO, BVRI].  He was born c. 1819 in Newcastle, son of John Graham [cen., BVRI].  In 1851 they were living in Newcastle and he was working as a tailor [Anc. cen.].  Cannot locate in 1861 or 1871 census index.

5c. Thomas Tinlin. Born c. 1826-7 [death cert. (not found in BT)].  He died of scarlet fever on 4 Jul 1838 in Buckingham Street, St. John, Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 11 [cert.].

6c. Catherine Tinlin.  Born in Jan 1832 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and chr. 8 Jul 1838 in St. Andrew’s, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen., BT].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Newcastle, was unmarried, and was working as a dressmaker [cen.].  [Possibly went to Australia and married Michael Henry Sinclair?].

7c. William Tinlin.  Born in Oct 1834 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and chr. 8 Jul 1838 in St. Andrew’s, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen., BT].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Westgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Westgate, working as a joiner apprentice [cen.].

8c. [?] Barbara Tinlin.  Born c. 1850 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with Thomas and Isabella (Richardson) Tinlin in Newcastle and was listed as their daughter, but this would make her mother at least age 55 at her birth [cen.].  It is probably more likely that she was their granddaughter.

4b. Esther Tinlin.  Born (4? or) 5 Jul 1801 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg., IGI (not in BT?)].  Possibly married Edward Wilkinson (before Feb 1824 - daughter's chr. in Bolam) [IGI].  They were living in Newton Underwood, Northumberland in 1851 and she was living as a widow in Jesmond, Northumberland in 1861 [cen.]. 

5b. James Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1839 in Northumberland, and chr. 31 Aug 1839 in Kirkwhelpington [CR, reg.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Kirkwhelpington [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his uncle Jacob Watson in White Hill, Kirkwhelpington, working as an errand boy [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with the same uncle in Middle White Hill, Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [cen.].  He married Isabella Patterson on 19 Nov 1869 at St. George's Presbyterian Church, Morpeth, Northumberland [CR, Newcastle Courant, 26 Nov 1869].  She was born c. 1851 in Elsdon, Northumberland, daughter of Thomas and Jane Patterson [cen.].  In 1871 and 1881 (?) she was living with her mother in East Corridge, Hartburn Parish, Northumberland, listed as a farmer’s wife, but her husband was not with her [cen.].  [Is she the Isabella Tinlin who married William James Hopps in 1874?].

Jane Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1844 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, and chr. there 28 Jul 1844 [CR, cen., reg.].  In 1851 and 1861 she was living with her parents in Cowpen, Northumberland [cen.].  She married Adam Riddell in 2nd quarter 1867 in St. John the Baptist, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, NRO].  He was born c. 1839 in Ingram, Northumberland, son of George and Elizabeth (Alexander) Riddell [cen., IGI].  He was a carter [cen.].  He died in 1st quarter 1869 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 30 [CR].  In 1871, she was living with her parents in Kirkwhelpington, a widow, working as a dressmaker [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her father in Kirkwhelpington and was working as a dressmaker [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Morpeth, Northumberland and was working as a dressmaker [cen.].  In 1901 she was living in Morpeth and was working as a boarding house keeper [cen.].

6b. Elizabeth Tinlin.  Born 23 May 1809 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland and chr. 28 May 1809 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [reg.].  She apparently never married.  Cannot locate in 1851 or 1861 census index.  She died in Nov 1867, age 58, when her residence was Kirkwhelpington, and was bur. on 6 Nov 1867 in Kirkwhelpington [reg., CR].  [Or is this a death record for Elizabeth Colville Tinlin, wife of William Tinlin?]

7b. Jane Tinlin.  Chr. 4 Apr 1819 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [IGI].  She is apparently the Jane Tinline, born c. 1821 in Northumberland, living in Capheaton, Northumberland in 1841 [cen.].  She died of dropsy on 12 Mar 1847 at the Bellingham Workhouse, Bellingham, Northumberland, age 28 [cert.].  At the time of her death, she had been working as a servant [cert.].

3a. William Tinlin.  Born 23 Nov 1775 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg.].  He married Elizabeth Yellowley on 24 Feb 1803 in Bolam, Northumberland [reg.].  She was christened 29 Sep 1782 in Hartburn, Northumberland, daughter of Edward and Mary (Nicholson) Yellowley [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Hartburn Parish, she was living in Bolam Parish [reg.].  They were Presbyterians [reg.].  She died 9 Dec 1837 in Kirkwhelpington, age 57, and was bur. 12 Dec 1837 in Kirkwhelpington [cert., reg. says age 60].  He lived in Kirkwhelpington the rest of his life, working as a linen weaver [cen.].  He died 19 Nov 1868 in Kirkwhelpington, age 92, and was bur. 22 Nov 1868 in Kirkwhelpington [cert., reg. says age 93].  They had children:

Mary Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1846 in Seaham Harbor, Durham [CR, cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Seaham Harbor [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her brother Thomas in Seaham Harbour [cen.].  She married John Johnson in 2nd quarter 1866 in Easington District (Durham) [CR as Tinlind, cen.].  He was born c. 1837 in Seaham, Durham [cen.].  Have not located on 1871 census.  In 1881 they were living in Haswell Moor, Easington, and he was working as a coal miner [cen.].  She died before 1891 [cen.].  In 1891 he was living in Hartlepool, Durham, a widower, working as a shipyard laborer [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Hartlepool, a widower, working as a mariner [cen.].  She apparently had a natural child:

Esther Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1865 in Seaham, Durham [CR, cen.].   In 1881 she was living with her mother and step-father in Easington, Durham [cen.].  Probably the Esther Tinlin who married James William Moon in 2nd quarter 1890 in Hartlepool District (Durham) [CR].  Cannot locate on 1891 or 1901 census.  They moved to Buffalo, Erie Co., New York shortly after their marriage and she died there in c. 1960 [PA].

3b. Edmund Tinlin.  Born 15 Jan 1809 at the Wallington Broomhouse, Hartburn Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Chr. 21 Jan 1809 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [reg.].   In Jun 1836 he was a witness at the marriage of his brother James [reg.].  Possibly the Edmund “Tinby” or “Tilby” living in Hornscastle, West Whelpington in 1841 [cen.].   In 1851 he was living with his father in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, was unmarried, and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  He died in Apr 1860, age 51, when his residence had been Kirkwhelpington, and was bur. 25 Apr 1860 in Kirkwhelpington [reg.].

4b. Thomas Tinlin(g).  Born 29 Aug 1811 in Hartburn, Northumberland, and chr. 7 Sep 1811 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church [IGI, cen.].  He married 1st Mary ______ [reg.].  She was born c. 1804-5 [calc.].  In Jan 1835 they were living in Whelpington, Northumberland, and he was working as a shoemaker [reg.].  She died in Mar or Apr 1841, age 35, when her residence had been Great Bavington, Northumberland, and was bur. 4 Apr 1841 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [reg.].  In 1841 he was living in Bavington, Northumberland, working as a shoemaker [cen.].  He married 2nd Barbara Carr on 24 Nov 1842 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland [CR, reg.].  She was chr. 25 Nov 1798 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, daughter of James Carr, mason, and Isabel Aynsley [cen., reg., IGI].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Kirkwhelpington working as a shoemaker and she was living in Great Bavington working as a servant [reg.].  In 1851 and 1861 they were living in Great Bavington and he was working as a shoemaker [cen.].  He was the choir director at Little Bavington [Newcastle Courant, 30 Jan 1852].  She died in Mar 1871, age 72, when her abode was Great Bavington, and was bur. 27 Mar 1871 in Kirkwhelpington [CR, reg.].  In 1871 he was living alone in Great Bavington, a widower, working as a shoemaker [cen.].  He died in Feb 1880, age 68, when his abode was Great Bavington, and was bur. 11 Feb 1880 in Kirkwhelpington [CR, reg.].  He had a daughter by his first wife:

James Tinlin.  Born 13 Feb 1814 at the Wallington Broomhouse, Kirkwhelpington (or Hartburn?), Northumberland [reg., census].  He was baptised 20 Feb 1814 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [reg.].  In 1841 he was living with his siblings in Kirkwhelpington [cen.].  He may have been married a first time, or had a natural daughter in Bedlington c. 1847 [cen.].  In 1851 he was listed in Belsay, Northumberland visiting a friend, was working as a labourer, and was unmarried [cen.].   He married  Isabella Brodie in 2nd quarter 1853 in St. Andrew, Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, NRO, both under Tinling, census].  She was born c. 1817 in Elsdon, Northumberland and chr. 20 Jan 1818 at Birdhope Craig, Northumberland, daughter of Michael and Ann Brodie [cen., IGI].  They were living in Belsay, Northumberland in Dec 1854, Feb 1856, Dec 1857, and in Helchesterland, Northumberland in Oct 1859 [son’s birth cert., reg.].  He was a laborer [reg.].  Cannot locate in 1861 census index. In 1871 they were living in Black Callerton, Northumberland, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Black Callerton, and he was working as a roadman laborer [cen.].  She is probably the Isabella Tindle who died in 3rd quarter 1885 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland), age 67 [CR].  He died 4th quarter 1885 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland), age 71 [CR].  He apparently had a natural daughter and then had four sons by his wife:

Margaret Tinling.  Born c. 1847 in Bedlington or Heatherwick, Northumberland, apparently daughter of James Tinlin(g) [cen.].  She married Robert Alexander in Tynemouth District (Northumberland) in 3rd quarter 1867 [CR].  He was born c. 1841 in Bedlington or Choppington, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1871, 1881 and 1891 they were living in Cramlington, Northumberland, and he was working as a tailor [cen.].  She died before 1901 [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Cramlington, a widower, working as a tailor’s cutter [cen.].

2c. “Male” Tinling.  Born 3 Dec 1854 in Belsay, Northumberland [cert.].  Almost certainly the “Male” Tinling who died 4th quarter 1854 in Castle Ward District, as he was unnamed on his birth certificate [CR].
