The Tinling Family of Manchester, Lancashire
Hector Tinling. Born c. 1785, not in Lancashire (probably in Brampton,
Cumberland - see the Tinling of Kirklinton family) [calc.,
cen.]. A Hector Tinling was a witness at the marriage of Jane Tinling and Jesse
Smith in Dec 1809 in Brampton, Cumberland [reg.]. He married Elizabeth Rayner
on 13 Jan 1817 in York [FSR].
She was born c. 1781-86, not in Lancashire [cen.]. They were living in South Kirkby Parish, Yorkshire in Dec 1818,
and Jun 1821, when he was working as an exciseman [reg.]. Possibly the Hector Tinling who was a victualler
at the Duke of Cumberland, 9 Cumberland Street, Manchester in 1821-22 [dir.].
They were living in Wakefield Parish, Yorkshire in Dec 1825, Dec 1827 [cen.,
IGI]. In 1841 they
were living in Duke Street, Hulme, Manchester and he was working as an excise
officer [cen.]. He died 1 Feb 1849 at 34 Welbeck Street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock,
Lancashire, age 63, bur. 5 Feb 1849 at All Saints Church, Chorlton-upon-Medlock [cert.,
FSR]. Cannot locate her in 1851 (many parts of the 1851 census for the
Manchester area are missing). She was bur. 26 Nov 1860 at All Saints
Church, Chorlton-upon-Medlock [CR, FSR]. They had children:
1. Mary Rayner Tinling. Born in South Elmshall, South Kirkby Parish, Yorkshire, and chr. there on 23 Dec 1818 [reg., cen.]. In 1841 she was living with her parents in Hulme, Manchester [cen.]. She married Pryce Roberts on 20 Sep 1850 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Lancashire [CR, FSR]. He was born c. 1826, son of John Roberts [FSR]. In c. 1857 they were living in Manchester, Lancashire [cen.]. In 1861 she was living in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Lancashire, a widow, working as a boarding house keeper [cen.]. In 1871-1901 she was living at 330 Oxford Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, a widow, working as a housekeeper/lodging house keeper [cen.]. She died 29 Jun 1904 in Chorlton District, age 85, when her address was still 330 Oxford Road [NPC, CR]. Her heir was her daughter, Anna Shankland, wife of George Shankland [NPC]. Anna Shankland (of 26 Goulden Road, Withington, Manchester) died 16 Feb 1933, age 76 [CR (thus born c. 1857), NPC].
2. John Tinling. Born in South Kirkby, South Kirkby Parish, Yorkshire, and chr. there on 10 Jun 1821 [reg., cen.]. In 1841 he was living with his parents in Hulme, Manchester, working as a bookkeeper [cen.]. In 1850 he went to prison as an insolvent debtor [London Gazette, 22 Jan 1850, pg. 23; and 1 Feb 1850, pg. 35 (which contains a long list of his former residences and business partners)]. He married Grace Whitaker on 8 Nov 1855 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Lancashire [CR under Sinling, cen., FSR]. She was born c. 1833 in Manchester, daughter of James Whitaker [cen., FSR]. They were living in Manchester, Lancashire in Apr 1857, Jan 1861 [IGI]. In 1861 they were living in Hulme, Lancashire and he was working as a “foreign clerk in warehouses” [cen.]. They were living at 32 Denton Street, Hulme, Lancashire in May 1863 [son’s death cert.]. In 1871 they were living in Hulme and he was an unemployed accountant’s clerk [cen.]. He died 23 Aug 1879 at 69 Warde Street, Hulme, Lancashire, age 58 [CR, cert.]. He was a bookkeeper [cert.]. In 1881 she was living in Hulme, Lancashire and was a widow [cen.]. She died 4th quarter 1887 in Chorlton District (Lancashire), age 52 [CR]. They had children:
1a. Annie Tinling. Born 1st quarter 1857 in Chorlton District (Lancashire) [CR, IGI]. Chr. 8 Apr 1857 in the Cathedral, Manchester [IGI]. In 1861 she was living with her parents in Hulme, Lancashire [cen.]. She was not listed with her parents in 1871 [cen.].
2a. William Tinling. Chr. 21 Jan 1861 in the Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire [IGI]. In 1861 he was living with his parents in Hulme, Lancashire [cen.]. He died 15 May 1863 at 32 Denton Street, Hulme, age 3, bur. 20 May 1863 at All Saints, Chorlton-upon-Medlock [cert., FSR].
3a. Mary Elizabeth Tinling. Born 1st quarter 1863 in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire [CR, cert., cen.]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Hulme [cen.]. She was living in Hulme in Aug 1879 [cert.]. In 1881 she was living with her mother in Hulme and was unmarried [cen.]. She married Thomas Henry Lough in 3rd quarter 1883 in Chorlton District (Lancashire) [CR]. He was born c. 1863 in Hulme, Manchester [cen.]. In 1891 they were living in Broughton (near Salford), Lancashire and he was working as a calicoe printer’s engineer [cen.]. In 1911 she was living in an institution in Chorlton, apparently under her maiden name [cen. index]. [In most records she is called simply Elizabeth Tinling].
4a. [probably] Grace Ada Tinling. Born 1st quarter 1867 in Chorlton District (Lancashire) [CR]. She died 2nd quarter 1870 in Chorlton District, age 3 [CR].
3. Elizabeth Walker Tinling. Chr. 11 Dec 1825 in St. John, Wakefield Parish, Yorkshire [IGI]. In 1841 she was living with his parents in Hulme, Manchester and was working as a dressmaker’s apprentice [cen.]. She was living at 34 Welbeck Street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Lancashire in Feb 1849, and was unmarried [father’s death cert.]. In 1850 she was living at 270 Cambridge Street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock [dir.]. In 1861 she was living with her sister Mary in Chorlton-upon-Medlock [cen.]. In 1871, 1881 and 1891 she was living in Chorlton-on-Medlock, was unmarried, and was working as a lodging house keeper [cen. (1881 under Tuiling)]. In 1901 she was living in Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Lancashire, was unmarried, and was working as a lodging house keeper [cen.]. She died 1st quarter 1904 in Chorlton District (Lancashire), age 78 [CR]. She had a natural daughter:
1a. Anna Roberts Tinling. Born 4th quarter 1856 in South Manchester, Lancashire [CR, IGI, reg.]. Chr. 31 Dec 1856 in the Cathedral, Manchester [IGI]. In 1861 she was living with her mother and aunt in Chorlton-upon-Medlock [cen., lists her as the daughter of her aunt]. In 1871, 1881, and 1891 she was living with her mother in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, was unmarried, and in 1891 was an art student [cen. (called her mother’s niece), 1881 under Tuiling]. In 1901 she was living with her mother in Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Lancashire, was unmarried, and was working as an artist [cen. says age 37]. In 1911 she was living in Chorlton [cen. index]. She died unmarried on 28 Mar 1932 in Manchester South District (Lancashire), age 75 [CR, NPC]. At the time of her death, she had been living at 16 Tatton View, Withington, Manchester [NPC]. Her heir was Grace Annie (Lough) Cannon, wife of Arthur Frederick Charles Cannon [NPC]. [There seem to have been two Annies, one daughter of Elizabeth Walker Tinling, and one the daughter of Mary Rayner Tinling Roberts, both the same age (plus Annie, daughter of John)]
4. William Thomas Tinling. Chr. 23 Dec 1827 in St. John’s, Wakefield Parish, Yorkshire [IGI]. In 1841 he was living with his parents in Hulme, Manchester [cen.]. He died 30 Oct 1841 in Hulme, age 14, bur. 2 Nov 1841 at All Saints, Chorlton-upon-Medlock [CR, Manchester Times and Gazette, 6 Nov 1841, FSR].
