The Tinlin Family of Massachusetts

This is a branch of the TINLIN of ANCRUM, ROXBURGHSHIRE family.

Thomas C. Tinlin(e).  Born 16 Jan 1860 in Gattonside, Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland, natural son of Charlotte Tinline [cert., cen.].  Neither his birth certificate nor his baptism record give the name of his father [cert., reg.].  In 1861 he was living with his mother in Gattonside, Melrose [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his grandfather Thomas Tinline in Gattonside, Melrose [cen.]. In 1881 he was living in Melrose, working as a plasterer, and was unmarried [cen.].  He immigrated to the United States on the ship "Cephalonia", arriving in Boston in Apr 1887 [Anc.].  He married 1st Annie R. Ford in c. 1884 (before he immigrated?) [EC, PB].  She was born 27 Sep 1865 in Dollar, Clackmannanshire, daughter of Alexander and Ann (Roxburgh) Ford, and immigrated to the United States in 1883 [EC, cen., PB, IGI].  They were divorced (c. 1892-95) and she remarried [EC, calc.].  Cannot locate him in 1900 census.  He married 2nd Margaret Brodie in c. 1902 in Massachusetts [EC, cen.].  She was born 12 Mar 1869 in Leith, Midlothian Scotland, daughter of Robert and Margaret (Graham) Brodie [EC].  In 1910 they were living in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts and he was working as a contracting plasterer [cen.].  In 1920 and 1930 they were living in Boston and he was working as a plasterer [cen.].  He was caretaker of Caledonian Grove park in West Roxbury, Massachusetts [EC].  His body was found 4 Apr 1938 floating in the Charles River in Massachusetts in 1938, the circumstances of his death being unknown, but he had been missing for about three weeks [EC].  He was bur. at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester, Massachusetts [EC].  She died 21 Dec 1946 in Brighton, Massachusetts and was bur. with her husband [EC].  He had three children by his first wife and five by his second:

1. Thomas Charles Tinlin.  Born 19 May 1885 in South Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts [draft card].  He was living with his mother and stepfather Robert Bain in Maynard Town, Massachusetts in 1900 and was working as a spinner [EC, cen.].  He married Lillian Warren Hoxie on 22 Aug 1908 in Boston, Massachusetts [EC, SDR, VR index].  She was born 7 Jul 1889 in Boston, daughter of Albert B. and Carrie S. (Whittaker) Hoxie [cen., SS, VR index (marr.)].  In 1910 they were living in Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, and he was working for the railroad [cen.].  In 1918 they were living in Norfolk, Massachusetts, and he was working as a storekeeper at a car shop [Anc.].  In 1920 they were living in Norfolk, Massachusetts and he was working as a storekeeper for the railroad [cen.].  In 1930 they were living in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts and he was working as a storekeeper for the railroad [cen.].  He worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad [EC].  In Apr 1942 they were living in Foxboro [draft card].  He died on 10 Apr 1948 in Waukegan, Lake Co., Illinois, bur. 15 Apr 1948 in Mansfield, Bristol Co., Massachusetts [SDR].  She died 3 Mar 1974 in Attleboro, Bristol Co., Massachusetts [SS, Anc.].  They had children:

1a. Thomas Charles Tinlin, Jr.  Born c. Jan 1910 in Massachusetts [EC, cen.].  In 1910 he was living with his parents in Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [cen.].  In 1920 he was living with his parents in Norfolk, Massachusetts [EC, cen.].  In 1930 he was living with his parents in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, was single, and was working as a clerk for the railroad [cen.].  He married Rosa Hansen [SDR].  He died 21 Dec 1973 in New Haven, Connecticut, when his residence had been Killingworth, Connecticut [Anc.].  His wife was then still living [Anc.].  They had children:

Carrie Alice Tinlin.  Born 3 Feb 1913 in Dedham, Massachusetts [EC, cen., SS].  In 1920 she was living in Norfolk, Massachusetts with her parents [EC, cen.].   In 1930 she was living with her parents in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [cen.].  She attended Pembroke College in Providence, Rhode Island [obit.]. She married Horace E. Codding on 12 Jun 1935 [her obit., SDR].  He was born 7 Feb 1909 in Massachusetts, son of Leroy and Hattie A. Codding [SDR, cen.]. He died 28 Jun 1963 [SDR].  She died 10 Aug 2000 in Norwood, Massachusetts [obit., SS].

Doris Lillian Tinlin.  Born 14 Aug 1914 in Massachusetts [SS, CE, cen.].  In 1920 she was living in Norfolk, Massachusetts with her parents [CE, cen.].  In 1930 she was living with her parents in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [cen.].  She married Louis Cinelli [sister’s obit., SDR].  He was born 6 Feb 1911 in Massachusetts, the son of Atillio and Livia Cinelli [SDR, SS].  He died 12 Aug 2002 in Mansfield, Massachusetts [Sun Chronicle online].  She died 20 Apr 2003 in Mansfield [SS].

4a. William Bain Tinlin.  Born 26 May 1920 in Massachusetts [SS, AB, D].  In 1930 he was living with his parents in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [cen.].  He married Marjorie Francis Gibbons in Foxboro, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [JET].  She was born on 21 Jan 1921 in Massachusetts, daughter of Martin Francis and Mary A. (Smart) Gibbons [SS, JET, cen.].  He was in the Navy at the time of their marriage [JET]. He was an engineer [EC].  He died in Nov 1985 in Greer, Greenville Co., South Carolina [SS].  She died 5 May 1999, benefits sent to Bellows Falls, Vermont [SS].  They had children:

3. Annie I. Tinlin.  Born 20 Aug 1892 in Amesbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts [EC, marr. rec.].  In 1900 she was living with her mother and step-father Robert Bain in Maynard Town, Massachusetts [EC].  In 1910 she was living with her mother and step-father Robert Bain in Uxbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts [cen.].  She married Frederick A. Perry on 7 Sep 1912 in Saundersville, Worcester Co., Massachusetts [VR index (she as Annie R.)].  He was born c. 1884 in Riverside, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, son of Frederick J. and Clara (Stoughton) Perry [VR index].  They are apparently the couple of that name living in Montague, Franklin Co., Massachusetts in 1920, when he was working as a farm manager [cen.].  In May 1922 they were living in Greenfield, Massachusetts [son's obit.].  In 1930 they were living in Rivertown, Franklin Co., Massachusetts and he was working as a watchman at a cutlery (factory or store) [cen.].  She died in Jul 1973 in Turners Falls, Franklin Co., Massachusetts [SS, brother's obit.].

4. Jean Brodie Tinlin.  Born 29 Nov 1902 in Boston, Massachusetts [EC].  In 1910 and 1920 she was living with her parents in Boston [cen.].  She married George Beattie Rochfort on 7 Sep 1923 [EC].  He was born 29 Aug 1893 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son of Charles H. and Mary J. Rochfort [Anc., cen., draft card].  In 1930 they were living nextdoor to her parents in Boston; he was working as a factory clerk and she as a telephone clerk [cen.].  In Apr 1942 they were living in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts and he was working at Best and Co. [draft card].  He died in Jul 1964 [SS].  She died 27 Apr 1992 in Massachusetts and was bur. in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester, Massachusetts [EC, SS].

5. Frances Taylor Tinlin.  Born 5 Jan 1904 in Boston, Massachusetts [EC].  In 1910 and 1920 she was living with her parents in Boston [cen.].  In 1930 she was living with her parents in Boston, and was working as a factory clerk [cen.].  She married Ernest Albert Carlson on 1 Sep 1930 in Deep River, Middlesex Co., Connecticut [EC].  She died on 27 Dec 1991 in Needham, Massachusetts, bur. 2 Jan 1992 in Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River, Connecticut [EC].

6. Margery Janet Tinlin.  Born in 1906 in Massachusetts [EC, cen.].  In 1910 and 1920 she was living with her parents in Boston, Massachusetts [cen.].  She died 2 Oct 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, bur. 5 Oct 1927 in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester, Massachusetts [EC].

7. John G. Tinlin.  Born 21 Oct 1908 in South Boston, Massachusetts [EC, cen., obit.].  In 1910 and 1920 he was living with his parents in Boston, Massachusetts [cen.].  In 1930 he was living with his parents in Boston and was single [cen.].  He married 1st Louise McMahon [RJT].  She was born 25 Mar 1914 [SS].  In 1938 they were living at 716 E. 7th St. in South Boston, Massachusetts [EC].  He served in World War II and the Korean War in the Coast Guard [obit.].  They later divorced and she died in Jun 1974 [SS].  He married 2nd  Mary J.
