The Tinling Family of Minorca


Isaac John Tinling, Esq.   One of his grandchildren said that the family was from the north of England [Internet].  Probably a member of the TINLING of CARLISLE family.  He is first mentioned in 1738 in Minorca, where he was Carpenter of the British Board of Ordnance [NH, GW].  He married Johanne Stubbs [DT].  He died 12 Oct 1781 [NH].  She survived until at least 1798 (the Joan Tinling who died in 1804 in York?) [GW].  They had children:

1. Agnes Tinling.  Born probably in Minorca [NH].  She probably died young [NH].

2. Elizabeth Tinling.  Born in 1743, probably in Minorca [O’Byrne, Hodgson, NH, HF (latter two say born 1744)].  She married Lt.-Gen. George Rochfort of the Royal Artillery, not later than 1767, probably in Gibraltar or Minorca [Hodgson, NH, GW].  He was born c. 1737, the son of Arthur Rochfort, M.P. for Westmeath, by his wife Sarah Singleton, and was a nephew of Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere [GW, Burke’s, obit.].  He was the Chief Fire Marshall to the Royal Laboratory [obit.].  In 1770 they were living in Belfield, Westmeath, Ireland [Internet, birthplace of daughter].  A Capt. G. Rochfort of the Royal Artillery was stationed at His Majesty’s Garrison, Portsmouth, Virginia in May 1781 [PRO].  One of their daughters was married in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1784 [IGI (Sarah)].  A Major Rochfort was commanding officer of the Royal Artillery stationed at Grenada in Oct 1786 [PRO].  He died 24 Feb 1821 at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, Kent, age 83 and was bur. in Woolwich on 2 Mar 1821 [London Times, 3 Mar 1821, pg. 4, Gentleman’s Magazine, 1821 vol. 1, pg. 282, reg.].  She died 8 May 1832 in London, age 89 [London Times, 10 May 1832, page 7].

3. John (Jonathan) Tinling.  Born in 1745, probably in Minorca [Hodgson, NH].  It is possible that he married 1st a Miss Maur, who may have died in Minorca [GW, Hodgson].  He married [possibly 2nd] Elizabeth Robinson [GW, NH].  She was born c. 1762 [calc.].  He was Ordnance Clerk of Works in Minorca in 1782 [GW].  They were living in Portsmouth, Hampshire in May 1783 [IGI under Tinley].  They were living in Alverstoke, Hampshire in Jun 1784, in Gosport, Hampshire in Jun 1786, Apr 1788, and Dec 1790, and in Northwood, Isle of Wight in Apr 1800 [IGI, Isle of Wight index].  He was Clerk of Works at Gosport, Hampshire from 30 Jun 1784 [GW].  He was Storekeeper in Grenada from 1790-1813 [GW].  In 1811 she was living in College Street, Westminster [daughter's obit.].  She was bur. 7 Oct 1814 in Fareham, Hampshire, age 52 [reg.].  He died 19 Sep 1822 at his home in Fareham, and was bur. 23 Sep 1822 in Fareham [Brighton Gleaner (1823), reg.].  They are both bur. in St. Peter & St. Paul’s churchyard, Fareham [GW].  They had children:

1a. Mary Augusta Tinling.  Chr. 9 May 1783 in Saint Thomas’, Portsmouth, Hampshire [IGI under Tinley, NH].  She married 1st Gother Mann, possibly in Trinidad [Grenada reg.].  He was born 1 May 1775 in Sheerness, Kent, son of Gen. Gother and Ann (Wade) Mann [IGI, DNB, IC].  They were living in Trinidad in Jul 1803 and were in Grenada in Oct 1803 [Grenada reg.].  He died 4 Dec 1804 at sea on the voyage back from the West Indies, and was buried at sea [IC].  She married 2nd Richard Parry Burnett on 5 Nov 1806 in Grenada [reg., GW].  He was born c. 1778 in Ireland [cen.].  He was a Captain in the 6th West India Regiment from 1805 [GW].  They were living in Grenada in 1807 [reg.].  They were living in Fareham, Hampshire in 1814 and May 1815 [GW, IGI].  In 1841 they were living near Turnpike Gate in Uplyme, Devonshire and he was on the half-pay in the Army [cen.].  She died in 4th quarter 1842 in Axminster District, bur. Axminster [CR, "Book of the Axe"].  In 1851 he was living on Turnpike Road, Uplyme, Devonshire, a retired Army Captain on the half-pay, and a widower [cen.].  In 1861 he was living at Laurel Cottage, Uplyme, Devonshire, a retired Captain, R.N., and a widower [cen.].  He died in 4th quarter 1864 in Staines District (Middlesex) [GW, CR].

2a. Elizabeth Tinling.  Chr. 13 Jun 1784 at Alverstoke, Hampshire [reg.].  She married William Whitmore, Esqr. on 6 Jul 1801 in Trinidad, the first Anglican marriage on the island [cert., TOW].  At the time they were both residing in Port of Spain and he was the Assistant Commissary there [cert.].  He was Deputy Commissary-General in Barbados in 1811 [GW].  She died in Mar 1811 in College Street, Westminster, age 25 [GW, Vere Langford Oliver, "Caribbeana", Jackson's Oxford Journal, 6 Apr 1811].  A William Whitmore married in 1811 in Barbados [IGI].  [See PRO for 1856 will of William Whitmore, which lists no relatives.].

3a. William Rochfort Tinling.  Chr. 14 Jun 1786 at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire, age 2 months [reg.].   He was bur. 16 Apr 1787 at Alverstoke, Hampshire [FHO].

5a. Johanna Staunton Tinling.  Born 19 Oct 1790, and chr. 10 Dec 1790 at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire [reg.].  She was bur. 5 Apr 1794 near Fort George, Grenada [reg.].

6a. George Vaughan Tinling, Major.  Born 15 Oct 1792 in Grenada [mar. reg., BSD].  A 2nd Lieutenant from 1 Jul 1812 in the Corps of Royal Engineers [AL, BSD].  Became a 1st Lieutenant on 21 Jul 1813 [AL, BSD].  Stationed in Spain from Dec 1813 to Jul 1814 [BSD].  In Oct 1814 he was a sponsor at the baptism of his niece Jane Tinling in Grenada [reg.].  Stationed in France Apr 1815 to Dec 1818 [BSD].  Took part in forming the Bridge of Boats across the Adour, and in the Investment and sortie at Bayonne in 1814, and present at the Capture of Paris in 1815 [BSD].  Stationed in Nova Scotia Jul 1819 to Aug 1826 [BSD].  A 2nd Captain from 19 Oct 1826 in the Corps of Royal Engineers [List, BSD]. Stationed in Ceylon May 1832 to Aug 1833 [BSD].  A 1st Captain from 10 Jan 1837 [BSD].  He retired on full pay 27 Jul 1840 [BSD].  In 1841 he was living with his sister Jane on Park Place in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [cen.].  He married Eleanor Buckle on 1 Oct 1845 at St. Nicholas’, Brighton, Sussex [CR, reg.].  She was born 6 Apr 1811 in Terwick, Sussex, the daughter of Matthew and Hannah (Buckle) Buckle [reg., cen., IGI].  At the time of their marriage he lived in Norfolk Road, Brighton, and she lived in Arundel Terrace, Brighton [reg.].  In 1850 they lived in Lymington, Hampshire [reg.]. He was a Capt. and a Major of the Royal Engineers [Times 4 Mar 1902].  In 1851 they were living in Lymington, Hampshire [cen.].  In Aug 1855 they were living in Reading, Berkshire [brother’s will].  In 1861 they were living in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and he was a retired major [cen.].  He died 23 Jun 1864 at 18 Lansdown Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucester, bur. 30 Jun 1864 at St. Paul’s, Shurdington, Gloucester [CR, London Times, 28 Jun 1864, pg. 1, BSD, FHO].  In 1871 she was living at 18 Lansdown Terrace, Cheltenham, a widow [cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 she was living in Holdenhurst, Hampshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1901 she was living in Bournemouth [cen.].  She died on 1 Mar 1902 at The Cottage, Littledownroad, Bournemouth, Devonshire [CR, London Times, 4 Mar 1902, pg. 1].  They had a daughter:

Rose Eleanor Tinling.  Born 29 Jun 1850 at Belmore, Lymington, Hampshire and chr. there 16 Aug 1850 [CR, reg., Morning Chronicle, 4 Jul 1850].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Lymington [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [cen.].  In 1871 she was living with her mother in Cheltenham [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in Clifton, Gloucestershire; she was unmarried and living on dividends from property [cen.].  She married Capt. Richard Chambers on 25 Jun 1885 at Holy Trinity Church, Bournemouth, Hampshire [CR, London Times, 29 Jun 1885, pg. 1].  He was born 31 Oct 1837 in Ross-shire, son of Richard Gray and Sophia (Taylor) Chambers [IGI, AC, Gentleman's Magazine, Sep 1853, pg. 325].  He attended Caius College, Cambridge [AC].  He had been in the 9th Lancers (Queen’s Royal), and was of the Inner Temple at the time of their marriage [Times].  In 1891 they were living at 18 Lansdown Terrace, Cheltenham and he was a retired Army officer [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her mother and her daughter in Bournemouth, Hampshire, while he was at home at 18 Lansdown Terrace, Cheltenham [cen.].  He died 15 Mar 1902 in Bournemouth [AC, Times, 18 Mar 1902, pg. 1].  In 1911 she was living in Cheltenham District [cen.].  She died 15 Dec 1932 at 18 Lansdown Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [Times, 17 Dec 1932, pg. 1].

7a. William Francis Tinling.  Born 8 Sep 1794 in Grenada [reg.].  He was bur. 28 May 1795 near Fort George, Grenada [reg.].

8a. Albert William Tinling.  Born 28 Oct 1796 in Grenada [reg. as William only].  An Ensign in the 104th Regiment of Foot from 31 Dec 1812 [AL].  Became a Lieutenant on 9 Mar 1815 [AL].  He was placed on the English half pay 24 May 1817 [AL].  He transferred to the 57th “West Middlesex” Regiment on 30 Sep 1819 [AL].  He was still listed in the Army List in 1822.  On 21 Mar 1822 he exchanged his lieutenancy in the 57th Foot for one in the 1st Dragoons [London Gazette, 13 Apr 1822, pg. 4].  In 1824 he was listed as a Lieutenant in the 1st Dragoons, on Half-Pay [AL].  He is listed among "Resignations and Retirements" in the 1827 Army List [AL].  He was bur. 17 May 1828 in the St. Martin's in the Field Burial Ground, Camden, London, age 31 [reg.].  At the time, his residence had been Northumberland Street, Strand [reg.].

9a. Charles Hugh Lyle Tinling, Major.  Born 29 Aug 1798 in Grenada [reg.].  Was an Ensign in the 13th “1st Somersetshire” Regiment of Foot from 20 Nov 1817 [AL].  In Jun 1820 he was quartered with his troops in Glasgow and was assaulted during a public riot [Edinburgh Advertiser, 13 Oct 1820].  Became a Lieutenant on 3 May 1821 [AL].  He was third in rank among Lieutenants in the 13th (or 1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot in 1821 [List].  On 13 Dec 1834 he was promoted from Lieutenant in the 13th Regiment of Foot to Captain in the 3rd Foot [London Gazette, 30 Dec 1834, pg. 3].  He married his cousin Frances Wentworth Tinling (see her entry below) on 18 Feb 1835 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [London Times, 24 Feb 1835, pg. 6].  At the time of their marriage, he was a Captain in the 3rd Regiment [London Times].  In 1841 they were living on Park Place in Cheltenham [cen.].  On 9 Nov 1846 he was promoted from Captain to Major in the 28th Foot [London Gazette, 8 Jan 1847, pg. 3].  On 15 Jan 1847 he was promoted from Brevet Major (in the 28th Foot) to Captain in the 74th Foot (Highlanders) [London Gazette, 15 Jan 1847, pg. 6; Times obit.].  They were living in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in May 1847 [SCR].  In 1851, 1855, and 1856 they were living at No. 8, Alfred Street, Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen, his will, dir.].  She could be the “Mrs. Tinling” living at 18 Chapel St., Grosvenor Square, London in 1852 [dir.].  In 1861 they were living in Weston super Mare, Somerset [cen.].  He died on 6 Mar 1864 at his residence, Hamilton Villa, Southsea, Hampshire [CR, London Times, 10 Mar 1864, pg. 1, his probate].  They had children:

1b. Mary Ann Tinling.  Born in 1836 (before 19 Mar) in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [cen., CR – Regimental Birth Indices Supplement (1835), Bristol Mercury, 19 Mar 1836].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Cheltenham [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset [cen.].  In 1871 and 1881 she was living with her mother in Portsea, Hampshire and was unmarried [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Portsea, Hampshire and was unmarried [cen.].  In 1901 she was living in Portsmouth, Hampshire and was unmarried [cen.].  In 1911 she was living in Portsmouth [cen. index].  She died unmarried in 4th quarter 1924 in Portsmouth District (Hampshire), age 88 [CR].

2b. Charles Pattison Tinling.  Born 2nd quarter 1838 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [CR, NH].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Cheltenham [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  He died 4 Apr 1853 at Alfred Street, Bath, Somerset [CR, Gentleman's Magazine, 1853, pg. 566, Daily News, 8 Apr 1853].

3b. William Harkness Tinling.  Born 2nd quarter 1840 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [CR].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Cheltenham [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  He died 23 Aug 1855 in Bath, Somerset [CR, Gentleman's Magazine, 1855, pg. 444].

4b. John Isaac Tinling, Major.  Born 3rd quarter 1842 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [CR, cen., NH].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  He was made an Ensign on 8 Jun 1860 [London Gazette, 4 Mar 1864, pg. 53].  Not listed in 1861 or 1871 census index.  He was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant on 30 Jul 1862 [London Gazette, 28 Mar 1865, pg. 12; Gazette of 25 Sep 1863, pg. 4 gives date as 1 Dec 1862; Gazette of 19 May 1863, pg. 6 gives date as 31 Jan 1863].  He married Ann Elizabeth Edmondson Webb on 17 Mar 1874 at Saint Mary’s, Portsea, Hampshire [CR, IGI, not in Times].  She was born 12 Dec 1849 in Newtown, Isle of Wight, and chr. 15 Mar 1850 at St. Mary’s, Portsea, Hampshire, daughter of Jonathan Edmondson and Maria Theresa (Webb) Webb [cen., IGI].  He was promoted from Captain to Major on 8 Jun 1880 [London Gazette, 13 Aug 1880, pg. 2].  In 1881 they were living in Portsea, Hampshire and he was a major in the Bombay Army on active duty [cen.].  In 1883 they were living in Bengal, India [IGI].  He retired from the Bombay Infantry on 31 Aug 1885 [London Gazette, 6 Oct 1885, pg. 5].  He died 1st quarter 1886 in Portsea District, age 43 [CR].  In 1891 she was living in Portsea, Hampshire, a widow [cen.].  In 1901 she was living in Keynsham, Somersetshire [cen.].  In 1911 she was living in Bath, Somersetshire [cen. index as Tinsbury].  She died 28 Nov 1929 at 25 Clarendon Road, Southsea, Hampshire, age 79 [CR, London Times, 2 Dec 1929, pg. 1].  They had children:

1c. John Allen Hugh Lyle Tinling.  Born c. 1877 in Bombay, India [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Portsea, Hampshire [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his aunt in Portsea [cen.].  He was not listed with his mother in 1901 [cen..].  He attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst [A2A].  In 1904 he was serving with the West African Frontier Force [London Gazette, 8 Jul 1904].  He married Ethel Louis Loch in 2nd quarter 1908 in Bradford on Avon District [JC, NH, CR].  She was born 7 Nov 1875 in Jubbulpore, India, daughter of Lt. James and Mary Elizabeth (Menzies) Loch [FL, cen.]. He resigned his commission in the Cheshire Regiment on 21 Oct 1908 [London Gazette, 20 Oct 1908].  In 1911 they were living in Bradford-on-Avon District, Wiltshire [cen. index].  They were living in Bathford, Somerset in 1914 and 1916 [CR, FL].  He died in 1st quarter 1952 in Portsmouth District, age 75 [CR].  She died in 1st quarter 1962 in Gosport District, age 86 [CR].  They had children:

1d. Veronica Margaret Tinling.  Born in Sep 1914 at Bathford, near Bath, Somerset [JC, CR, NH, FL].  She married Kenneth Cooper [NH]. They had four children [NH].  She was living in Australia in 2003 [JC].  She died 1 Mar 2009 in Albany, Western Australia [JC].

2d. John George Ernest Tinling.  Born 4 May 1916 at Bathford, near Bath, Somerset [CR, NH].  He married Gwen M. Griffiths in 4th quarter 1939 in Portsmouth District (Hampshire) [CR].  He was living in Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire in 1972 [NH].  He died 14 Jun 2003 in Portsmouth, Hampshire [JC].  They had children:

1e. David John Allen Tinling, Dr.  Born [DR] in Portsmouth District (Hampshire) [NH, CR].  He was working at Brunei (probably Brunel?) University in 1972 [NH].

2e. Barry James Stewart Tinling.  Born 23 Sep 1943 in Portsmouth District (Hampshire) [NH, CR].  He died in or shortly before Jan 2004 in South East Hampshire District, age 60 [CR].

3e. Nigel Bruce Tinling.  Born in [DR] in Portsmouth District (Hampshire) [NH, CR].  He married Maura Mulcany in [DR] in Portsmouth District [CR].

4e. Megan Carol A. Tinling.  Born in [DR] in Gosport District [NH, CR].  She married 1st Derek Anthony Tringham in 1st quarter 1970 in Gosport District [NH, CR].  He died in a cave diving accident in Spain in 1976 [Internet, JC].  She married 2nd Adrian P. Jones in or shortly before [DR] in Bath District (Somerset) [CR]. 

2c. Muriel Margaret Tinling.  Born c. 1880 in Bombay, India [cen., 1901 cen. says born in Sherwer, India].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Portsea, Hampshire [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Portsea [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her aunt in Southampton [cen.].  In 1911 she was living with her mother in Bath, Somersetshire [cen. index as Tinsbury].  She died unmarried in 2nd quarter 1954 in Portsmouth District, age 74 [CR].

3c. Lucy Frances Tinling.  Born 26 Jul 1881 at Baroda Villa, Southsea, Hampshire [CR, NH, cen., Hampshire Telegraph, 30 Jul 1881].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Portsea, Hampshire [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her mother in Keynsham, Somersetshire and was unmarried [cen.].  In 1911 she was living in Ludlow District, Shropshire [cen. index as Tuiling].  She was listed as unmarried in Jan 1942 [London Gazette, 13 Jan 1942].  She died unmarried on 11 Feb 1964 in Portsmouth District, age 83 [CR, London Gazette, 13 Mar 1964].  At the time of her death, her residence was Thurland, 19 Villiers Road, Southsea, Hampshire [London Gazette, 13 Mar 1964].

4c. Gladys Mary Tinling.  Chr. 19 Sep 1883 in Bengal, India [cen. (1901 says born in Inhon, India), IGI].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Portsea, Hampshire [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her mother in Keynsham, Somersetshire [cen.].  She married Edmund Richard Marston on 13 Sep 1904 in Bath District (Somersetshire) [CR, Internet].  He was born 26 Apr 1868 in Ludlow, Shropshire, son of Richard and Frances (Evans) Marston [Internet, cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Ludlow District, Shropshire [cen. index].  He died 17 Aug 1928 in Erpingham District, Norfolk [Internet, CR].  She died 18 Sep 1948 in Ludlow District, Shropshire, age 64 [Internet (says 1949), CR].

5c. Dorothy Edmondson Tinling.  Born 2nd quarter 1885 in Southsea, Hampshire [CR, NH].  In 1891 she was living with her mother in Portsea, Hampshire [cen.].  In 1901 she was a pupil at the Quontora (?) School for Ladies in Weston-super-Mare, Somersetshire [cen.].  In 1911 she was living with her mother in Bath, Somersetshire [cen. index as Tinsbury].  She married Frederic L. Jones in 3rd quarter 1916 in Portsmouth District (Hampshire) [CR].   They were living in Ludlow District in 3rd quarter 1917 [CR].  They had two children [NH].

5b. Augusta Amelia Lys Tinling.  Born 1st quarter 1845 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [CR, NH].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  She died 25 Mar 1859 in Clifton, Gloucestershire [CR, Gentleman's Magazine, 1859, pg. 549].

6b. George Vaughan Tinling.  Born 6 May 1847 in Monteith Row, Glasgow, Lanarkshire [SCR, Glasgow Herald, 10 May 1847].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1871 or later censuses [cen.].

7b. Edward Brace Tinling, Commander.  Born 15 Oct 1849 at 19 Alfred Street, Bath, Somerset [cert., Times marriage].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset [cen.].  He entered the Navy in 1863 [Times obit].  In 1871 he was stationed on the ship “Northumberland” and was listed at the Thomas Hotel in Devonport, Devonshire, a Sub-Lieutenant [cen.].  He was promoted from Sub-Lieutenant to Lieutenant on 8 Oct 1874 [London Gazette, 9 Oct 1874, pg. 1].  He married Elizabeth “Lilla” Campbell Pollexfen on 26 Apr 1877 in Lympstone, Devonshire [CR, London Times, 30 Apr 1877, pg. 1].  She was born 4 Oct 1856 in Bombay, India, the eldest daughter of the late Capt. J.J. Pollexfen of the Bombay Army [Times marriage, cen., (prob. Jonathan James Pollexfen, d. William Tinling.  Born in 1749, probably in Minorca [Hodgson, O’Byrne, NH].  Entered the Army in the 29th Worcestershire Regiment on 7 Oct 1782 [AL - listed as William Tingling].  He drew a map of the area of operations of a Canadian campaign c. 1780, now at the U.S. Library of Congress.  Promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant in the 29th Regiment on 3 Jan 1783 [London Gazette, 7 Jan 1783, pg. 1 (misprint, says 1782); AL gives 10 Nov 1784].  He was second in command to John Ross at Cataraqui (now Kingston, Ontario, Canada) c. 1783-4, and in 1785 he made accusations leading to Ross’ arrest, but Ross was exonerated [Dic. of Canadian Biography, Vol. IV, pg. 684].  He was in charge of the engineers at Cataraqui, which was then in Western Quebec [Dic. of C. Stanley Bullock, Jr. on 4 Jul 1840 at St. Mary’s, Southampton [Hampshire Telegraph, 13 Jul 1840, GW].  He was born c. 1792 in London, son of Stanley Bullock, and was in the Madras Cavalry [GW].  In 1841 they were living with his father at Den House, East Teignmouth, Devonshire, and he was in the East India Company Service of the Army [cen.].  In 1842 they were in Calcutta, India and in 1846 in Secunderabad, India [cen.].  In 1851 they were living at 3 Moira Place, Southampton and he was a Lt.-Gen. in the East India Company Service [cen.].  Not listed in England in 1861.  He died 17 Feb 1865 in Southampton [CR, Gentleman's Magazine (1865), Vol. 1, pg. 527].  In 1871 she was living at 3, Moira Place, Southampton, a widow [cen.].  She had children by both husbands and died 5 Jun 1871 at 3, Moira Place, Southampton [NH, London Times, 9 Jun 1871, pg. 1].

5a. Anna Maria Tinling.  Born 24 Dec 1798 and chr. 28 Jan 1799 at All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].  She married Frederic Thesiger on 9 Mar 1822 at All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].  He was born 15 Jul 1794 in London, son of Charles and Mary Anne (Williams) Thesiger [Burke’s, Times obit.].  Cannot locate in 1851 [a different family was living at 7 Eaton Square – cen.].  On 1 Mar 1858 he was raised to the Peerage as the Rt. Hon. Sir Frederic Thesiger, 1st Baron Chelmsford [Burke’s].  In 1861, 1871 and 1872 they were living at 7 Eaton Square, London [London Directory].  The 1861 census for Eaton Square is missing.  In 1871 they were staying as lodgers at 2 Oriental Terrace, Brighton, Sussex [cen.].  She died 9 Apr 1875 at 7 Eaton Square, London, bur. Brompton cemetery [London Times, 12 Apr 1875, Complete Peerage].  He died 5 Oct 1878 at 7 Eaton Square, London, bur. Brompton cemetery [London Times, 7 Oct 1878, pg. 6 and succeeding articles].

5. Mary Tinling.  Born in 1753, probably in Minorca [O’Byrne, NH].  She married Lt. Thomas Staunton of Sibton Park, Suffolk in the early 1770’s, probably in Minorca [GW, Hodgson, NH].  He was son of Thomas Staunton, M.P. for Ipswich, of Little Sampford, Essex, (but originally of Stockgrove, Buckinghamshire), by his 2nd wife, (Elizabeth) Catherine Thurston (his first wife had been the Hon. Jane Vane (youngest daughter of the 2nd Baron Barnard and sister of the 1st Earl of Darlington)) [his will, her bur. rec., Gent’s Mag., Oct 1784, pg. 798 (the M.P. died 1 Oct 1784 in Abingdon Street, London)].  He (the son) may be the Thomas Staunton, Gentleman, Ensign of the 13th Regiment of Foot, appointed on 26 Jul 1768 [Gent.’s Mag, Jul 1768].  He was bur. 23 May 1778 at Little Sampford, Essex [reg.].  At the time of his death, their residence was Sampford Hall, Little Sampford [reg. trans.].  She was a witness at the marriage of her brother William in Boxgrove, Sussex in Jan 1790 [reg].  She was a witness at the marriage of her sister Johanna in East Teignmouth, Devon in Jan 1793 [reg].  She died 22 Feb 1819 in Welbeck Street, Marylebone, London, age 65, and was bur. 1 Mar 1819 at St. John the Baptist, Hillingdon, Middlesex [Gent’s Mag., March 1819, pg. 281, FHO, MI, reg. (says age 66)].  She was called "of Sibton Park, Suffolk" at the time of her death [FHO].

6. Augusta Tinling.  Born 9 Nov 1754, probably in Minorca [O’Byrne, MI, NH].  She married Lt.-Col. William St. Clair of the 25th Regiment of Foot (Royal Borderers) in 1773 on Minorca [Burke's LG, O'Byrne].  He was born in 1746, son of Capt. William St. Clair, himself son of the 10th Lord Sinclair [GW (who doubts the Lord Sinclair connection), Burke's LG].  In 1786 they lived at Chichester, Sussex [O’Byrne].  Their home was at Skedoway (or Shedoway), Dysart, Fife and in Edinburgh [MI, Blackwood’s Magazine]. He died 23 Feb 1830 at the home of his son in the Mall, Clifton [Burke's LG, Blackwood’s Magazine, Jun 1830, page 966].  She died 29 Nov 1844 at the home of her son, Staverton Court, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and was bur. at Holy Trinity, Cheltenham [MI, London Times, 4 Dec 1844, page 7].  One of their sons, Thomas Staunton St. Clair, left an autobiography which frequently mentions his family and their doings ["A Soldier's Recollections of the West Indies"].

7. David Latimer Tinling-Widdrington, Lieut.-Gen. Sir (K.C.H.).  Born 23 Jul 1758, probably in Gibraltar [Hodgson, O’Byrne, NH]. He was involved in the Siege of Gibraltar in 1779-82 [GW].  An Ensign in the 12th “East Suffolk” Regiment of Foot from 11 Apr 1782 [AL].  He was a witness at the marriage of William Rochfort and Sarah Bergoin on 27 Oct 1785 in Chichester, Sussex [Internet, IGI].  On 4 Oct 1786 he was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant in the 12th Regiment of Foot [AL; London Gazette, 3 Oct 1786, pg. 6 (says 7 Oct)].  He married Sarah Teesdale on 1 Nov 1787 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex [reg., Hodgson].  She was chr. 11 Feb 1763 in Inverness, the only daughter of Capt. William and Mary (Widdrington) Teesdale of Sennicotes, Sussex, and was one of the two co-heiresses of the ancient noble family of Widdrington [IGI, reg., DLTW (apparently Sennicotts House in Funtington, Sussex)].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Chichester, and she was living in All Saint’s in the Pallant [reg.].  In about 1798, she inherited her share of the Widdrington estates, on the condition that she assume the surname Widdrington [DLTW].  These included Hauxley Hall in Hauxley, Northumberland, where they resided at some time [DLTW, Blackwood’s Magazine, Jun 1830, page 904].  He was stationed in Ireland in 1792 [AL].  He became a Captain in 14 Apr 1793, and transferred to the 17th “Leicestershire” Regiment of Foot on 29 Jun 1793 [AL].  He became a Lt-Col. on 6 Aug 1799, and was ranked 515 of 749 in 1801 [AL].  They were living in Dover, Kent in Feb 1800 [reg.].  In 1802 he was placed on the Irish half pay [AL].  In Dec 1803 and Jan 1804 they were in Aberdeen, Scotland [IGI, SCR].  He saw duty in Gibraltar and in the West Indies [Gentleman’s Magazine Oct 1839, p. 424]. In 1806 his rank was 167 of 675 and he was “late of 17th Regiment” [AL].  He assumed the surname of Widdrington in addition to his own by Royal License on 3 Mar 1809 [London Gazette, 28 Feb 1809, pg. 1].  On 1 Jan 1812 he became a Major-General and was appointed to the staff of Gibraltar [DLTW, List].  In Aug 1815 he was prosecuting several surgeons at a general court-martial in Gibraltar [Times, 2 Sep 1815].  She died in 1816, probably in Gibraltar [GW].  He became a Lt.-General on 27 May 1825 [”Book of Dignities”].  He was a Knight Commander of the Order of the Guelphs from 1833 [”History of the Orders of Knighthood of the British Empire”].  He died 30 Jul 1839 at The Manorhouse, Bexley, Kent (temporary home of his son Sidney), and was bur. at St. Mary, Bexley [London Times obituary, CR, Internet].  For their children, see the TINLING-WIDDRINGTON FAMILY.

8. Isaac Pattison Tinling, Major-Gen.  Born in 1760, probably in Gibraltar [O’Byrne, MI, NH].  Was an ensign in the 20th Regiment of Foot “The East Devonshire” from 1 Jun 1778 [AL (listed as Isaac Tingling)].  Promoted from Eldest Ensign to Lieutenant in the 20th Regiment on 3 Dec 1785 [AL, London Gazette, 3 Jan 1786, pg. 1 and 11 Mar 1786, pg. 1].  Was a witness at the marriage of David Latimer Tinling and Sarah Teesdale on 1 Nov 1787 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex [reg.].  From 1789 he was on duty in Nova Scotia and Jamaica [GW].  He took part in an assault on Fort l’Acul in San Domingo in Feb 1794 and was wounded [GW].  Made a Captain on 14 Mar 1794 [AL].  On his way back to England, he was captured by the French and spent a year in France as a prisoner of war before being exchanged [GW].  He married Mary Ann Adeane on 22 Dec 1795 in at St. Marylebone, Middlesex [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, both were living in St. Marylebone [reg.].  She was born c. 1766, daughter of Gen. James Whorwood  Adeane, M.P. (grandnephew of James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos) and Anne Jones [Burke's LG].  Transferred to the 1st Regiment of Foot (Grenadier Guards) on 24 Jan 1798 [AL (listed as Isaac Peter Tinling)].  Was a Captain in 1800 [BT - daughter’s chr.].  Promoted to Major on 1 Oct 1803 [Gentleman’s Magazine, 1803, part 2, pg. 1081].  They were living in Great Quebec Street, St. Marylebone, Middlesex in 1804 [Morning Chronicle, reg.]. Was a Lt.-Col. on 12 May 1804, when he was ranked 534 of 675, 1st Foot Guards Deputy Quarter-Master-General at Halifax, Nova Scotia [AL, Internet].  In 1807 he was still living in Halifax [cen.].  In 1809 he was ranked 344 of 671 in the same rank and service [AL].  He took part in the battles of Corunna on 16 Jan 1809 and Barrosa on 5 Mar 1811 [AL].  In 1811 he was ranked 181 of 631 and “joined the 1st Regiment” 14 Feb 1811 [AL].  In 1812 he was ranked 92 of 722 [AL].  In 1813 he was ranked 87 of 769 [AL].  He was made a Colonel on 4 Jun 1813 and was ranked 139 of 224 in 1814 [AL].  In Dec 1813 he was famously rebuked by the Duke of Wellington for allowing his officers to carry umbrellas in the rain while under enemy fire [GW].  In 1815 he was ranked 54 of 284 [AL].  In 1816 and 1817 he was ranked 53rd and had taken part in the battles at Peninsula and Waterloo [AL].   In 1819 he was ranked 47th and was in the Grenadier Guards, 1st Regiment [O’Byrne, AL]. On 12 Aug 1819 he was made a Major-General in the Grenadier Guards and was still in that position in 1821 [AL]. He died of dropsy on 28 Sep 1822 in Outream, Boulogne and was bur. in France on 8 Oct 1822 [Blackwood’s Magazine, Oct 1822 (says 22 Aug), pg. 516; Book of Dignities, MI, GW (says 28 Sep 1822), bur. record].  She was a witness at her son’s marriage in Walcot, Bath in 1828 and was living in Somerset in 1830 [reg., Pigot’s Directory, page 681].  In 1841 she was living in Hampton Hill, Bath, Somerset and was also listed in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [cen.].  She died 8 Jan 1848 at 18 Chapel St., Grosvenor Square, London [CR, London Times, 10 Jan 1848, pg. 7, Internet]. They were both bur. in Leckhampton, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where there is a monumental inscription to them [Internet].  They had children:

1a. James Tinling.  Born c. 1796 [NH].  He was a Private in the West Kent Militia (57th) and was stationed at Yaxley Barracks at the time of his death [reg.].  The Yaxley Barracks was a prisoner of war camp for captured French soldiers [Internet].  He was bur. 24 May 1813 at St. Peter’s, Yaxley, Huntingdonshire, age 17 [reg.].

2a. William Frederick Tinling, Lt.-Col.  Said to have been born in 1798 (not in London), but since his sister was born in Aug 1798, he was probably born in 1797 [cen., Times obit., NH].  His godfather was Major-General Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester, nephew of King George III [GW].  An Ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards from 27 Jan 1814 [”The Waterloo Roll Call”, AL].  On 26 Dec 1821, by purchase, he was promoted from Lieutenant to Lieutenant and Captain in the 1st Foot [London Gazette, 9 Feb 1822, pg. 3].  Was present at at least one of the actions of Waterloo on the 16-18 Jun 1825 [AL (of 1815?)].  He was awarded the Waterloo Medal [AL].  He is apparently the Captain Tinling who was acting adjutant to the 3rd Battalion of the 1st regiment of Foot Guards in Aug 1825 when his horse bolted, causing a near fatal accident [Times, 5 Aug 1825].  Promoted to Major on British Half-Pay on unattached list on 10 Dec 1825 [Waterloo...].  He married Meliora Susanna Francklin on 19 Aug 1828 at Walcot Church, Bath [reg., London Times, 21 Aug 1828, page 4, Gentleman’s Magazine, Sep 1828, pg. 269].  She was chr. 22 May 1810 at Old Church, St. Pancras, London, daughter of John Robinson Francklin, Esq., Captain in the E.I.C., and his wife Meliora Elizabeth Butler, and granddaughter of Michael Francklin, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia [cal., cen., Gent. Mag. Sep 1828, IGI].  At the time of their marriage they were both living in Walcot [reg.].  In Jan 1830 they lived at 45 St. James Square, Walcot [son’s chr.].  In 1835 they were living in Bath, Somersetshire [daughter’s birthplace].  In 1841 they lived at 18 Chapel St., Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London [cen., Royal Blue Book Fashionable Directory 1841].  He was in the Grenadier Guards [Times obit].  On 12 May 1848 he was promoted from Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel to Major in the 68th Foot [London Gazette, 12 May 1848, pg. 4].  He died 7 Apr 1850 at his residence, 18 Chapel St., Grosvenor Square, London [London Times, 10 Apr 1850, sup. pg. 1].  In 1851 she was living at 18 Chapel Street, a widow [cen.].  She died 7 Jan 1887 in Brussels, age 76 [London Times, 11 Jan 1887, pg. 1].  They had children:

1b. William Pattison Tinling, Bt. Lt.-Col.   Born 13 Sep 1829 in Bath, Somerset, and chr. 22 Jan 1830 in Walcot, Bath [Gentleman's Magazine (1829), pg. 269 (says a daughter); Belle Assemblee (1829) (says a son), cen.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Mayfair, London [cen.].  He became an Ensign (by purchase) in the 90th Foot on 4 Jun 1847 [London Gazette, 4 Jun 1847, pg. 4].  He was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant (by purchase) on 20 Apr 1849 [London Gazette, 20 Apr 1849, pg. 2].  In Sep 1855 he was listed among the "severely wounded" at Sebastapol [London Gazette, 22 Sep 1855, pg. 3].  He was in the 90th Foot (Perthshire Volunteers) and was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal for service in India in 1857-59 [Internet].  He was mentioned in a despatch of 21 Feb 1858 concerning his command of the 90th Infantry at a battle at Alum Bagh, where he defended his post "with much spirit" [London Gazette, 30 Apr 1858, pg. 4].  He was mentioned in another despatch of 24 Sep 1858 mentioning his command of 200 men of the 90th Infantry in an action at the River Goomtee, near Lucknow [London Gazette, 31 Jan 1859, pg. 50].  Not listed in England in 1861.  He died 8 Jan 1863 in Nice, France, age 34 [London Times, 23 Jan 1863, pg. 1, Lucknow Memorial (Portsmouth) says he died “during the service of the 90th Light Infantry in India”].  At the time of his death, he was a Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel [London Gazette, 6 Feb 1863, pg. 17].  He had no children [NH].

2b. Meliora Georgianna Tinling.  Born 17 Jul 1835 in Bath, Somerset [cen., Bristol Mercury, 25 Jul 1835].  In 1841 she was living with her parents in Mayfair, London [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her mother at 18 Chapel Street, Mayfair, London [cen.].  She married the Rev. Charles Edward Jenkins, M.A., on 3 Jul 1860 at the Parish Church, Clifton, Bristol [cert.].  He was born 7 Jul 1826 in Brussels, Belgium, the son of the Rev. Evan and Eliza Jenkins [IGI, mar. cert.].  He was a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and Chaplain of the Chapel Royal, Brussels [mar. cert., London Times, 6 Jul 1860, pg. 1, Anc.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Clifton [cert.].  In 1863 he was a clergyman in Brussels, by coincidence giving weekly instruction at Miss Ghémar’s Finishing School where the two elder daughters of George Tinline were enrolled [TF]. Cannot locate on 1861-1891 censuses.  He died 18 May 1873, aged 46 [Pall Mall Gazette, 20 May 1873 (apparently in Brussels, not listed in CR)].  In 1901 she was living in Paddington, London, a widow [cen.].  She may have returned to Belgium and died there, as there is no death record for her in England.  They had no children [NH].

3b. stillborn Tinling.  A son, born and died 25 Mar 1842 in Chapel Street, Grosvenor Square, London [The Era, 3 Apr 1842].

4b. stillborn Tinling.  A daughter, born and died 15 Apr 1844 in Chapel Street, Grosvenor Square, London [Annual Register, 1844, pg. 164].

3a. Mary Ann Tinling.  Born 25 Aug 1798 and chr. 28 Sep 1798 in Ashford, Kent [IGI].  She apparently died young.

4a. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 20 Feb 1800 at St. Mary Magdalene, Canterbury, Kent [BT, ADT].  She probably died young, as her sister Ann was called her parents’ oldest daughter in 1813 and her sister Frances was later (1835) called the only daughter of her parents [London Times, 24 Feb 1835, pg. 6].

7a. Ann Tinling.  Born 9 Mar 1804 in Great Quebec Street, London, and chr. 4 Apr 1804 at St. Mary’s, St. Marylebone, Middlesex [Morning Chronicle, 13 Mar 1804, reg.].  She was their eldest daughter, and died 22 Jul 1813 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent [Gentleman’s Magazine, 1813, part 2, pg. 94].

8a. Frances Wentworth Tinling.    Born in 1808 in Halifax, Nova Scotia [London Times, 6 Apr 1886, pg. 1, NH].  She was a witness at her brother’s marriage in Walcot, Bath in 1828 [reg.].  She married her cousin Major Charles Hugh Lyle Tinling (see his entry above) [Times obit.].  In 1871 and 1881 she was living in Portsea, Hampshire and was a widow [cen.].  She died 1 Apr 1886 at her home, 12 Clarendon Road, Southsea, Hampshire, age 78 [CR, Times obit.].

9. Charles Ashley Stubbs Tinling, Rear Admiral.  Born in 1765 in Chichester, Sussex [Hodgson, O’Byrne, Phipps, NH, GW]. Entered the Navy in 1778 on the Porcupine and was midshipman during its “gallant action” with two Spanish frigates in 1780 [Times obit].  He commanded a gunboat and served with the Marines on shore at the “memorable siege of Gibraltar” [Times obit].  Commissioned a Lieutenant on 27 Jul 1793 [”The Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy”].  In 1794 he was a lieutenant in the Orion in Lord Howe’s action; and in the Queen in Lord Bridport’s action in 1795 [Times Obit].  He married 1st Frances “Fanny” Phipps on 8 Dec 1797 at St. Sidwell’s, Exeter, Devonshire [transcript of reg.].  She was born 8 Jan 1773 at Brampton, near Huntingdon, daughter of Constantine and Elizabeth (Tierney) Phipps [Phipps].  He was a captain of the sloop “Scorpion” in the North Sea 1797-1800 [VCH Sussex, v. ii, pg. 167].  Commissioned a Commander on 7 Sep 1798 [Commissioned...].  Commissioned a Captain on 14 Feb 1801 [Commissioned...].  Actively employed in the North Sea and in the West Indies in 1801, including the expedition to the Helder [Times obit].  They were living in Cleve Dale, Gloucestershire in Dec 1802 [London Times, 18 Dec 1802, pg. 3].  His first wife Fanny died 30 Jun 1803 and was bur. 7 Jul 1803 in the catacombs of All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].  He married 2nd Sarah Bullock on 12 Jan 1805 in South Weald, Essex [reg.].  She was the daughter of William Bullock, Esq., of Ongar, and Shelley, Essex [his will].  In Jun 1807 he was posted in Aldborough (Norfolk?) [Leeds Mercury, 13 Jun 1807].  On 9 Feb 1810 he was at Southwold, Suffolk and was a Captain [”Hist. Manuscripts Comm.: Records of Southwold, Suffolk” pg. 117].  He was made a Rear Admiral 12 Jul 1830 and was Rear Admiral of the Red [”Book of Dignities”].  In 1833 he was listed as a rear-admiral on retired half-pay [”Sea Officers 1833"].  He “commanded the Dictator of 64 guns in the English Channel" [Times obit]. He had a home in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.  He died 27 Nov 1840 in Southampton, Hampshire, age 76, and was bur. in the catacombs of All Saints’ Church, Southampton [London Times, 2 Dec 1840, pg. 4, CR, Gentleman’s Magazine Feb 1841 pg. 205, GW].  In 1841 she was living with her son Edward in Southampton [cen.].  She died 17 Feb 1848 at Exeter, Devonshire in the home of her son Edward, and was bur. at St. Leonard’s, Exeter [London Times, 21 Feb 1848, sup. pg. 9, CR, GW].  He had three children by his first wife, and the remainder by his second wife:

Charles Stubbs Tinling.  Born 3 Oct 1799 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and chr. there 31 Oct 1799 [cen., reg.].  He was an Ensign in the 14th “Buckinghamshire” Regiment of Foot from 5 Apr 1815 [AL].  He transferred to the 76th Regiment 23 Jul 1818 [AL].  He was still listed in the Army List in 1821.  On 3 Jul 1823 he was promoted from Ensign in the 76th Regiment to Lieutenant in the 14th Foot Soldiers [London Gazette, 12 Jul 1823, pg. 3; Phipps, List].  He married 1st Mary Susanna Leheup Cocksedge, of The Hill, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, on 27 Sep 1825 in St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster [VCH Hertfordshire, v. III, pg. 209, IGI under Finling].  She was born in 1786-90 in Hessett (or Stowmarket), Suffolk, daughter of Michael William Leheup, Esq. of Hessett, Suffolk and Ashwell, Hertfordshire, and his wife, Mary Wyche Waddington, and had been previously married to Martin Thomas Cocksedge, Esq., who left her a widow [Times obit, Anc., IGI, cen.].  He was placed on the British Half-Pay on 24 Nov 1825 [List].  In 1839 they were living at 5 Great Terrace, Worthing, Sussex [dir.].  In 1841 they were living at York Terrace in Worthing and he was in the Army [cen.].  In 1846 they were living in Worthing [dir.].  In 1851 they were living at Summer Lodge, Broadwater, Sussex and he was on the Army Half Pay [cen.].  She died 8 Oct 1857 at Belmont House, Sidmouth, Devonshire, bur. 16 Oct 1857 at St. Mary’s Church, Ashwell, Hertfordshire [London Times, 12 Oct 1857, pg. 1, CR, Gencircles].  He married 2nd Eliza Connolly on 25 Oct 1860 at St. James’s, Piccadilly, Westminster, Middlesex [CR, IGI].  She was born 18 Aug 1813 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, the second daughter of Gen. William Hallett and Sarah (Hewett) Connolly of Southsea, Hampshire [cen., London Times, 26 Oct 1860, pg. 1, IGI].  In 1861 they were living in Southsea, Hampshire and he was a late officer in the Army [cen.].  He lived (or had property) at Hesset, Suffolk and Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  In 1871 they were living in Walcot, Bath, Somerset and he was a landowner [cen.].  He died 18 May 1879 in Bath District (Somerset), age 79 [FHO, CR].  There is a window monument to him in the Chedzoy Parish, Somerset church [FHO].  Cannot locate her in 1881 census index (the Eliza Lucking living in Norfolk?).  In 1891 she was living in Portsea, Hampshire, a widow [cen.].  She died 1st quarter 1892 in Portsea District (Hampshire), age 78 [CR].  He had children by his first wife:

1b. Charles William Frank Tinling.  Chr. 3 Jun 1828 in Broadwater, Sussex [reg.].  There is no burial record for him in Broadwater, so this is probably just an earlier christening record for Charles William Francis Tinling.

2b. Charles William Francis Tinling.  Chr. 8 Dec 1829 in Broadwater, Sussex [reg., Times obit.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Worthing, Sussex [cen.].  He married Maria Lucinda Slade on 19 Nov 1850 at St. Mary’s Chapel and later at Trinity Church, Chelsea, Middlesex [reg., Burke’s 1856, 1868, 1937, Phipps, London Times, 20 Nov 1850].  She was born c. 1831 in Grays Inn, London, eldest daughter of Sir Frederick William Slade, 2nd Baronet and Barbara Maria Browne-Mostyn [cen., Burke’s 1909].  In 1851 they were living with his father at Summer Lodge, Broadwater, Sussex [cen.].  In 1853-4 they were living in Cossington, Somerset [Times].  In 1861 they were living with her father at Maunsel Grange, North Petherton, Somerset [cen.].  On 10 Jun 1861 he was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain of the West Somerset Regiment of of Yeomanry Cavalry [London Gazette, 18 Jun 1861, pg. 5].  Cannot locate in 1871 census index.  In 1881 they were living in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, when his occupation was landowner [cen.].  He died 16 Aug 1885 in Bath, Somerset, age 57 [CR, London Times, 21 Aug 1885, pg. 1].  At one point she lived at Tower Mansions, Christchurch-road, Bournemouth, Hampshire [London Gazette, 30 Jun 1914].  In 1911 she was living in East Preston District, Sussex [cen. index].  She died 17 May 1914 in Boscombe, Hampshire, age 84 [CR, London Times, 20 May 1914, pg. 1].   They had children:

3c. Charles Tinling.  Born 29 Dec 1854 at 18 Lowndes Square, London [London Times, 3 Jan 1855, pg. 1].  [CR (registered in 1st quarter 1855)].  He died 29 Dec 1854, a few hours after his birth, bur. 31 Dec 1854 at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Chelsea, London [CR, Times, FHO].

2a. Adelaide Tinling.  Born 6 Jun 1801 at Hill, Southampton [Gentleman’s Magazine, 1801, part 1, pg. 81, Phipps].  She died unmarried [Phipps].  She is probably the daughter who died in 1811 [Monthly Magazine, 1811, pg. 297].

3a. James Amyatt Tinling.  Born 13 Dec 1802 at Clevedale, Gloucestershire, and chr. 7 Feb 1803 in Magnotsfield, Gloucestershire [reg. (as James Amyett), London Times, 18 Dec 1802, pg. 3]. He was bur. 9 Jun 1812 at St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, age 9 [FHO].

4a. Francis Bullock Tinling.  Born 16 Apr 1806 in Southwold, Suffolk [reg.].  He was in the Royal Navy [Phipps].  He died unmarried c. 1826 in Penang (now in Malaysia) as the result of a disease caught while serving in the Burma War of 1824-6 [Phipps, GW].

5a. George Tinling.  Born 19 Jul 1807 in Southwold, Suffolk [reg.].  He died at age five months, and was bur. 6 Jan 1808 in Southwold, Suffolk [reg.].

7a. Henry Tinling.  Born in 1809 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk [GW, Phipps].  He was bur. 18 Sep 1826 in the catacombs of All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire, age 16 [reg.].

8a. Charlotte Phipps Tinling.  Born 28 May 1812 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk and chr. there on 24 Jun 1812 [Phipps, NH, GW, IGI].  She married Capt. Edward Douglas Tinling, Rev.  Born 2 Dec 1815 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk [Phipps, BVRI].  Chr. 29 Dec 1815 in Suffolk [IGI].  Attended grammar school in Bury St. Edmunds in 1817-26 [Anc.].  Educated at Christ Church, Oxford from Dec 1833 (M.A. 1840).  In 1841 he was living with his mother in Southampton and was a clergyman [cen.].  He married Katherine Maria Elton on 24 Aug 1841 at All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [CR, London Times, 27 Aug 1841, pg. 8].  She was born c. 1813 in Clifton, Gloucestershire, and chr. 30 Jul 1814 in St. Andrews, Clifton, the daughter of Sir Charles Abraham Elton, 6th Baronet and Sarah Smith [cen., Burke’s, IGI].  In 1843 they were living in Halberton, Devon [cen., “Alumni Oxonienses”].  He was the rector of West Worlington, Devon 1844-7 ["Alumni Oxonienses"].  He was appointed one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools on 18 Jan 1847, a position he held until 1881 [London Gazette, 19 Jan 1847, pg. 1; “Alumni Oxonienses”].  In 1851 he was living with the children in Catharine Place, Walcot, Bath [Internet].  In 1851 she was visiting with his sister and brother-in-law in Pear Tree Green, Southampton [cen.].  In 1854 and 1856 they lived at 30 Royal Crescent, Walcot, Somerset [reg., dir.].  In 1857 and 1861 they lived at 9 Cavendish Place, Walcot, Somerset [reg., cen.]. He was a Canon of Gloucester Cathedral from 1867 [”Alumni Oxonienses”].  At one time they lived at 30 Southernhay Place, Exeter, Devonshire [Internet].  In 1865, 1871 and 1872 they were living at 8 Cornwall Gardens, Queen's Gate, London [London Directory].  Cannot locate in 1871 census index (they were not at home in Cornwall Gardens) [cen.].  She died 3 Jul 1876 at 16 Cranley Place, Onslow Square, London, age 62 [London Times, 4 Jul 1876, pg 1; CR].  She was bur. at St. Clement’s, Boscombe, Dorset [Verey “The Diary of a Victorian Squire” pg. 130].  In 1881 he was living in Gloucester, a widower, but also had a house at 18 Cranley Place, London [cen., London Directory].  In 1891, he was living in Gloucester, was a widower, and was a Clerk in Holy Orders and Canon of Gloucester [cen.].  He died 2 Dec 1897 at Biarritz, France, age 82 [London Times, 4 Dec 1897, pg. 11, Boase, v. 3, pg. 976, London Gazette, 28 Jan 1898, pg. 26].  At his death, one son and four daughters were still living [Times obit].  They had children:

Edward Charles Tinling, Lt.  Born 28 May 1842 at the residence of his grandfather Sir Charles Elton, Clevedon-Court, Gloucester, and chr. 24 Jun 1842 in Bristol [CR, Phipps, Annual Register 1842, 1861 cen. says Clifton, Somerset, IGI].  In 1851 he was a pupil at the Salisbury Cathedral School in Wiltshire [cen.].  He entered the Navy as a cadet in 1856 [Gentleman's Magazine].  In 1861 he was a midshipman on the ship “Imperience” [cen.].  He was in the Royal Navy on the Ship Encounter [London Times, 22 Jul 1863, pg. 7; 12 Feb 1864, pg. 6].  He was mentioned in a despatch of 10 May 1862 regarding the attack and capture of Ningpo: "Acting Lieutenant E. C. Tinling, ably assisted by Mr. William Cantlow, Boatswain of this Ship, got the howitzer on the walls and into action" [London Gazette, 15 Jul 1862, pg. 2].  He died 5 Mar 1863 at Ningpo, China, from a wound received in the siege of Showshing [Times, Gentleman's Magazine, 1863, pg. 793].  There was a debate in the House of Lords concerning the circumstances of his death [numerous articles in the Times].

2b. Maria Augusta Tinling.  Born 4th quarter 1843 in Halberton, Devonshire [CR, Phipps, cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her father in Walcot, Bath, Somersetshire [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  She married Col. Sebastian White Rawlins on 24 Aug 1863 in Walcot, Bath [London Times, 26 Aug 1863, CR]. He was born 1 Nov 1838 in Bishops Hull, Somerset, seventh son of the Rev. Henry William Rawlins, Rector of Fiddington, Somerset, and Eliza Nash [cen., Burke’s LG].  He was a Captain in the 8th Hussars and Commissioner at Cardiff [Burke’s 1876].  They lived at various times in South Kensington, London; in Montreal, Quebec; in Chelsea, London; in Bath, Somerset; in Portsmouth, Hampshire; and in Bristol, Gloucester, and had five daughters, as well as two sons who died young [cen., Burke’s LG].  In 1871 they were probably in North America.  In 1881 they were living in Cardiff St. John, Glamorgan, Wales, and he was a Major in the 69th Regiment [cen.].  In 1891 they were living at 36 Oakfield St., in Roath, Glamorganshire, and he was a Colonel commanding the regimental district [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Bristol, Gloucestershire, a retired army colonel [cen.].  She was not listed with him (unable to locate her) [cen.].  He died 23 Oct 1907 at 3 Westfield Park, Redland, Bristol [London Times, 25 Oct 1907, pg. 1].  In 1911 she was living in Bristol [cen. index].  She died 29 Apr 1926 at 19 Hughendon Road, Clifton, Bristol, age 83 [London Times, 3 May 1926, pg. 1].

3b. George Douglas Tinling.  Born 4th quarter 1844 in Halberton, Devonshire [CR, cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his father in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  Educated Christ Church, Oxford (M.A. 1872).  In 1871 he was living in a lodging house in Holdenhurst, Hampshire (along with his future brother-in-law Robert G. Scurfield) [cen.].  He was vicar of St. Clementia, Bournemouth, Hampshire 1871-9 [”Alumni Oxonienses”].  He resigned his position because of “long-continued ill-health” in 1879 and planned to spend the winter in Algiers [London Times, 12 Nov 1879, pg. 9].  He died 13 Dec 1880 at Pau, France, age 36 [London Times, 14 Dec 1880, pg. 1].

4b. Rose Catherine Tinling.  Chr. 8 Nov 1846 at St. Andrews, Clevedon, Somerset [Phipps, Clevedon Civic Society webpage]. In 1851 she was living with her father in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  She married John Dando Sedding on 6 Feb 1872 in Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, Gloucestershire [CR, Phipps, Verey “The Diary of a Victorian Squire” pg. 37].  He was born 13 Apr 1838 in Eton, Berkshire, son of Richard and Peninnah (Millner) Sedding [Internet, 1871 cen.].  He was an important architect and has his own entry in the Dictionary of National Biography [DNB].  They lived at 447 Oxford Street, London and The Croft, West Wickham, Kent [his Times obit.].  They are not listed in the index to the 1881 census.  On 1 Apr 1891 they were staying at the Vicarage, Winsford, Somerset [cen.].  He died there on 7 Apr 1891 [London Times, 9 Apr 1891, pg. 1].  She died 15 Apr 1891 at Dulverton, Somerset [London Times, 17 Apr 1891, pg. 1].  They were both bur. in West Wickham [Internet].

5b. Alice Mary Tinling.  Born 3 Jul 1848 at 30 Southernhay, Exeter, Devonshire [Trewman's Exeter Flying Post, 6 Jul 1848, not in CR].  In 1851 she was living with her father in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  She married 1st Rev. Robert Grey Scurfield on 27 Apr 1880 in Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, Gloucestershire [London Times, 29 Apr 1880, pg. 1, CR].  He was born 6 Aug 1844 in Hurworth, Durham, the youngest son of George John Grey Scurfield, Esq. and Anne Alice Williamson of Hurworth-upon-Tees, Durham, and was Vicar of Frocester, Gloucestershire [Times marriage and obit., Anc.].  He died just four months after their marriage, on 29 Aug 1880 at Holcombe Cottage, Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire [London Times, 1 Sep 1880, pg. 1].  In 1881 she was living in Westminster, London, a boarder in the home of Catharine Potter [cen.].  She married 2nd Oswald Auchinleck Browne, M.D. on 31 Jul 1890 in West Wickham, Kent [CR, Daily News (London), 4 Aug 1890].  He was born 14 Sep 1855 in Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, son of Octavius and Martha Swete (Cummins) Browne [Anc., cen., CR].  In 1891 they were staying at a hotel in Winsford, Somerset (where her brother-in-law died a week later) [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in St. Marylebone, London, and he was working as a physician [cen.].  They lived at 7, Upper Wimpole St., London [Anc.].  He died 9 Apr 1908 in Marylebone District [London Times, 11 Apr 1908, pg. 1, CR].  She died 17 Jul 1909 in Wandsworth District [London Times, 19 Jul 1909, pg. 1, CR].

6b. John Parr Tinling.  Born in 1851 in Bath, Somerset [Phipps, NH, cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1871 census index.  On 31 May 1879 he was appointed as Clerk in the Governor’s Office of the Administrator, Pretoria, South Africa, and was still working there in 1881 [NASA].  He married Rebecca Bourhill on 19 Jan 1889 at St. Mary’s, Johannesburg [London Times, 22 Feb 1889, pg. 1].  She was the daughter of John Charles Herries Bourhill, Esq. [Times, NASA].  They lived in Bowwood Cottage, Bowwood Road, Claremont, Cape Province, South Africa [CWGC].  He died in 1919 [NH].  They had children:

1c. Katie Tinling.  She lived in South Africa [NH].  Probably the Catherine Mary Bourhill Tinling who was author of "Pattern Drafting for Schools and Colleges", with sketches by Noel Tinling [Internet].

2c. Rose Beatrice Noel Tinling.  She married Harold Peter Bourhill [NASA].  He was born c. Dec 1886 in Natal [Internet].  He had been previously married [NASA].  He died 6 Jun 1945 in Johannesburg, South Africa [NASA, Internet].

3c. Edward Douglas Tinling.  Born 14 Dec 1894 at Doornfontein, Johannesburg [CWGC, London Times, 7 Jan 1895, pg. 1].  He was a private in the 4th Regiment of Infantry, South African Infantry [CWGC].  He died 21 Sep 1917, age 22, bur. Ypres Memorial Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium [CWGC].

7b. Rhoda Helen Tinling.  Chr. 3 Dec 1854 in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [reg., not in CR].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1871.  In 1881 and 1891 she was living with her father in Gloucester and was unmarried [cen.].  Cannot locate her in index to 1901 census.  In 1911 she was living in Guildford District, Surrey [cen. index].  She died unmarried on 22 Jan 1939 in London, age 84 [CR, London Times, 23 Jan 1939, pg. 1].

8b. Beatrice Katharine Tinling.  Born 18 Jan 1857 at Cavendish Place, Bath and chr. 14 Feb 1857 in Walcot, Bath, Somerset [Bristol Mercury, 24 Jan 1857, reg.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Walcot, Bath [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1871.  She was living with her father in Gloucester in 1881 and 1891 and was unmarried [cen.].  Cannot locate her in index to 1901 census.  She died unmarried on 4 Apr 1910 at The Red Cottage, Shere, Guildford, Surrey, age 53 [CR, London Times, 6 Apr 1910].

9b. Norah Maria Tinling.  Born c. 1862 [calc., Phipps, London Times obit.].  She died 26 Jun 1874 in Kingston District (Middlesex), age 12, bur. St. Mary's, Teddington [CR, London Times, 29 Jun 1874, pg. 1, reg.].

10. Johanna Tinling.  Born in 1767, probably in Minorca [Hodgson, O’Byrne, NH (says born 1768)].  Was a witness at her brother William’s marriage at Boxgrove, Sussex in Jan 1790 [reg].  She married Pitt Burnaby Greene on 31 Jan 1793 at East Teignmouth, Devonshire [reg.].  He was chr. 14 Jun 1765 at St. James, Westminster, the only son of the poet Edward Burnaby Greene (nephew of Sir William Burnaby, 1st Baronet) and Ann Cartwright, and lived in St. Giles in the Fields, Middlesex at the time of his marriage [DNB, reg., GW, IGI].  He was a Captain in the Royal Navy [Hodgson].  They lived at Moira Place, Southampton from 1803-11 [GW].  He became captain of the ship Bonne Citoyenne in 1811 [Internet].  He was senior officer in the River Plate in South America from December 1811 until September 1812 [Internet].  They lived at The Upper House, Wickham, Southampton by 1822 [GW].  He died 24 Apr 1837 at Wickham and was bur. there on 2 May 1837, age 72 [London Times, 27 Apr 1837, page 7, BT (says age 71)].  She died at Wickham and was bur. there 28 May 1841, age 74 [London Times, 24 May 1841, page 7, BT].  They had children christened at All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].

11. George Tinling, Maj.  Probably born in Minorca [GW, O’Byrne, NH].  Entered the 57th “West Middlesex” Regiment as an Ensign on 14 Jul 1780 [AL].  He served in America from 1783-91 [GW].  Promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant in the 57th Foot on 10 Oct 1789 [London Gazette, 6 Oct 1789, pg. 2].  Became a Captain in the 38th “1st Staffordshire” Regiment 26 May 1795 and a Major in the same regiment 20 Feb 1796 when he was ranked 695 of 700 [AL].  In 1795-96 he was Commandant of the Hospital at Martinique [GW (his account book from this post is located at the National Army Museum in London)].  In 1797, his last entry in the Army List, his ranking was 635 of 696 [AL].  He was at one time in the 11th Regiment of Foot [O’Byrne].  He died unmarried, and was bur. 25 Aug 1797 at Fort George, Grenada [GW, reg.].
