The Tinline Family of Morebattle, Roxburghshire


James Tinline.  Born c. 1791-96 in Roxburghshire [cen.].  He married Hannah Chapman on 11 Oct 1812 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of their marriage they were both living in Ancrum [reg.].  She was born c. 1795 in Ednam, Roxburghshire [cen.].  They were living in Morebattle, Roxburghshire from Oct 1820 through Apr 1836 and he was working as a laborer [reg.].  In 1841 they were living in Morebattle, and he was working as a labourer [cen.].  He died before 1851 [cen. (OUR says he died in 1858, age 57, but this cannot be correct)].  In 1851 she was living in Morebattle, a widow [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her son John in Oxford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index].  She died 17 Sep 1875 in Orford, Ontario, age 80, bur. Duart Cemetery, Orford [OUR, LYN].  They had children:

1. Susan Tinline.  Born 28 Oct 1820 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg.].  In 1841 she was living with her future husband in Spring Wood, Kelso, working as a servant [cen. (in index under Finlssrie)].  She married John Fleming on 3 Aug 1841 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Springwoodpark in Kelso Parish [reg.].   Her sister Janet Tinline was a witness to their marriage [reg.].  He was born c. 1815 in Duns, Berwickshire (possibly son of Charles and Janet (Lamont) Fleming, who had a daughter Mary there in 1817) [cen.].  They were living in Kelso in 1842-52 [SCR].  In 1851 they were living at Springwood Park, Kelso and he was working as a park keeper [cen.].  They immigrated to Canada in 1854 [LYN, cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 4 Jul 1885 in Aldborough, Elgin Co., age 70 [LYN, cert.].  She died 28 Apr 1909, bur. Rodney Cemetery, Aldborough Township, Elgin [LYN].  Could not locate her on the 1901 census and have not located a death certificate for her.

2. John Tinline.  Born 7 Mar 1822 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg.].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Morebattle, working as a labourer [cen.].  He married 1st Jane Laidlaw on 1 May 1846 at the Free Church, Allanton, Edrom, Berwickshire [Presbyterian reg. as Tindal].  She was born c. 1825 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire [cen.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Morebattle and she was living in Edrom [reg.].  In 1848 and 1851, they were living in Allanton, Edrom and he was working as a mason [reg., cen.].  He immigrated to Canada in 1851-58, his first three children have not been located after this time [cen.].  They were said to have perished in the sinking of their ship bringing them to America [GM].   He married 2nd Jane Beattie [cen., AF].  She was born c. 1822 in Westminster, Ontario [cen.].  In 1861 they were living in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen. (including a son John, age 13, who may be her son from a previous marriage?)].  In 1871 they were living in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He and his brother James were the stonemasons of Orford who built the stone abutments for the new bridge across the Thomas River at Thamesville, Ontario in 1874 [Internet].  In 1881 and 1891 they were living in Orford and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 30 Jan 1900 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario, age 77 [cert.].  She died 5 Aug 1900 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario, age 75 [cert.].  They were both buried in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Chatham-Kent, Ontario [LYN].  He had three children by his first wife, and the remainder by his second:

1a. James Tinline.  Born 28 Jul 1846 in Oxenridge, Coldstream, Berwickshire [SCR, cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Allanton, Edrom, Berwickshire [cen.].  He is said to have drowned when the ship bringing them to America sank [GM].

2a. Charles Stuart Tinline.  Born 8 May 1848 and chr. 28 May 1848 at the Free Church, Allanton, Edrom, Berwickshire [Presbyterian reg.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Allanton, Edrom, Berwickshire [cen.].  He is said to have drowned when the ship bringing them to America sank [GM].

3a. Michael Tinline.  Born c. 1850-51 in Edrom, Berwickshire [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Edrom [cen.].  He is said to have drowned when the ship bringing them to America sank [GM].

4a. James B. Tinline.  Born 8 Aug 1858 in Ontario [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index].  In 1871 and 1881 he was living with his parents in Orford, Bothwell Co. [now Kent Co.], Ontario [cen.].  He married 1st Eliza Charlotte Brown on 1 Jul 1884 in Orford Twp., Ontario [OBR, OMR, cen.].  She was born 29 Jan 1861 in Ontario, daughter of Robert James and Margaret (Watts) Brown [cen. (tombstone says 1862), LYN].  In 1891 and 1901 they were living in Orford and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  She died 11 Aug 1901 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario, bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford [cert., OCFA].  He married 2nd Caroline "Carrie" Pray on 8 Jun 1904 in Kent Co., Ontario [LYN, OCFA].  She was born 27 Aug 1861 in Marysville, Hastings, Ontario, daughter of Joseph C. and Margaret Jane (Phoenix) Pray and had been previously married to Robert Thompson [death cert., LYN].  She died 25 Apr 1919 in Zone, Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario, age 59, bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford [cert., OCFA].  He died in 1937, bur. Gosnell Cemetery [LYN].  He had children by his first wife:

1b. Edith Charlotte Tinline.  Born 10 Jul 1885 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario [cert., cen.].  In 1891 and 1901 she was living with her parents in Orford [cen.].  She married Herbert Beverly Seed, before 1908 [LYN].  He was born in 1881 [LYN (tombstone)].  He died in 1947, age 66 [LYN].  She died in 1971, age 86 [LYN].  They were both buried in Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg, Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].

5a. Janet Tinline.  Born 27 Feb 1860 in Ontario [LYN (various other dates listed on different sources)].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Orford [cen.].  She married William Scott on 28 Dec 1887 at Thamesville, Ontario [marr. rec.].  He was born 21 Oct 1862 in Edinburgh, Scotland, son of William and Ellen (Urquhart) Scott [cen., marr. rec., LYN].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Orford, and he was working as a blacksmith [marr. rec.].  In 1901 they were living in Wallaceburg, Bothwell Co., Ontario and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Gillard Street, Wallaceburg, Kent East Co., Ontario and he was working as a blacksmith [cen., LYN].  She died 21 Apr 1930 in Wallaceburg, Chatham Township, Kent Co., age 69 [cert. (gives birthdate as 27 Feb 1861)].  He died 17 Jan 1933 in Chatham, Kent, age 70 [LYN].  They were both buried in Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg [LYN]. 

6a. Hannah T. Tinline.  Born 3 Jun 1863 in Orford or Westminster, Ontario [cen., death cert.].  In 1871 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Orford [cen.].  She married William John Caswell on 11 Feb 1890 in Ridgetown, Kent Co., Ontario [OMR].  He was born in Apr 1862 in Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, son of Joseph and Jane Caswell [Internet, cen.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Orford, Ontario [Internet].  Cannot locate in 1901 census index.  In 1911 they were living in Galt, Waterloo South Co., Ontario and he was working as an engineer [cen.].  She died 1 Aug 1925 in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario, age 62, bur. Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [cert.].  He died in 1941, age 78, bur. Gosnell Cemetery [LYN].

3. William Tinline.  Born 22 Jun 1824 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg., cen. (says 10 Mar 1825), OUR (says 3 Jan 1826)].  In 1851 he was living with his sister Susan and her husband at Greenwood Park, Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen. (as Finline)].  At that time he was unmarried and working as a joiner [cen.].  He married Margaret Cairns on 26 May 1852 in Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario [OUR].  She was born 1 Jun 1821 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, daughter of John and Janet (Rodger) Cairns [OUR].  He immigrated to Canada in 1851, she came the following year [cen.].  In 1861 they were living in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index].  In 1871, 1881 and 1891 they were living in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen. (1871 under Tinyline - LYN)].  In 1901 they were living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario, and he was a retired farmer [cen.].  She died 25 Jan 1905 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario, age 85 [cert.].  He died 16 Jun 1908 in Orford, age 83, a widower [cert.].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Chatham, Ontario [LYN, OCFA].  They had children:

3a. Janet Tinline.  Born 24 Apr 1854 in Port Hope-Cold Springs, Northumberland Co., Ontario [LYN (other records list various dates)].  In 1861 and 1871 she was living with her parents in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index, cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  She married John Murray on 20 Dec 1887 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [marr. rec.].  He was born in 1850 in Westminster Twp., Middlesex South Co., Ontario, son of John Andrew and Jane (Beattie) Murray [LYN, marr. rec.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Highgate, was a widower, and was working as a blacksmith, and she was living in Cold Springs, Orford [marr. rec.].  In 1911 they were living in Highgate and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.].  He died 12 Mar 1920 in Highgate, Orford Twp. [LYN].  She died 7 Mar 1940 in Highgate, Orford Twp., Ontario [LYN, EL].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate [LYN].

4a. William Tinline (Jr.).  Born 19 Jul 1858 in London, Middlesex Co., Ontario [LYN, cen. (1911 says Jul 1857), son's marr. rec.].  In 1861 and 1871 he was living with his parents in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen. index, cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1884 he was living in Orford [Western Candians].  He married Euphemia C. Hogg on 12 May 1886 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [cen., MM, OMR, LYN].  She was born 17 Feb 1859 in Cayuga, Haldimand Co., Ontario, daughter of John and Margaret (Miller) Hogg [cen., MM, LYN].  In 1891, 1901 and 1911 they were living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 23 Feb 1922 in Orford Twp., age 63 [LYN].  She died 4 Jul 1948 in Orford, age 89 [LYN].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [OCFA].  They had children:

Marguerite (Maggie) Tinline.  Born 20 Oct 1887 in Orford Twp., Bothwell Co., Ontario [OBR, cen.].  In 1891, 1901 and 1911 she was living with her parents in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  She married George Derwin Gaynor on 28 Jan 1920 in Thamesville, Orford Twp. [LYN].  He was born 27 Jan 1883 in Orford Twp, Kent Co., Ontario, son of Peter and Nancy (Newcomb) Gaynor [LYN].  He died in 1956 [LYN].  She died in 1971, age 84 [LYN].  They were bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].

2b. Whitson John Tinlin.  Born 8 Mar 1894 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  He died of diabetes on 28 Feb 1904 in Orford Twp., Ontario, bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cert. as John Whitson, OCFA].  At the time of his death he had been a student [cert.].

3b. William Elgin Tinline.  Born 28 Feb 1899 in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario [cert. (cen. says 28 Jan), marr. rec.].  In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  He married Agnes Caroline Mills on 14 Feb 1924 at Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [marr. rec.].  She was born in 4th quarter 1901 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, daughter of Richard Joshua and Esther Elizabeth (Simmons) Mills [marr. rec., CR].  At the time of their marriage, he was a farmer and she was a telephone operator; he was residing in Orford and she in Chatham [marr. rec.].  He died 8 Feb 1954 in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario, age 54, bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [OCFA].  She later remarried [LYN].

4b. Mary Tinline.  Born 1 Jun 1902 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cert.].  In 1911 she was living with her parents in Orford [cen.].  She married William Cecil Cowan on 31 Oct 1923 in Ridgetown, Kent Co., Ontario [marr. rec.].  He was born 1 Mar 1901 in Tilbury Twp., Kent Co., son of William Samuel and Lottie (Cowlie) Cowan [marr. rec., LYN].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Orford and he was working as a farmer [marr. rec.].  He died 25 Nov 1965 in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].  She died in 1980 [LYN].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].

5a. Hannah Chapman Tinline.  Born 19 Jul 1863 in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen., marr. rec.].  In 1881 and 1891 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  She married 1st William Wallace Elwood on 6 Apr 1892 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [cert.].  He was born 4 May 1858 in Westminster, Middlesex East Co., Ontario, son of Ephraim and Isabella (Sutherland) Elwood [marr. rec., LYN].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Orford, working as a farmer, and she was living in Orford [marr. rec.].  He died 4 Apr 1895 in Orford, age 36 and 11 months [cert.].  In 1901 she was living in Orford, was a widow, and was working as a tailoress [cen.].  She married 2nd George Edward Thompson on 15 Jan 1902 in Kent Co., Ontario [LYN, OUR].  He was born c. May 1874 in Highgate, Orford Twp., son of George and Mary (Owens) Thompson [LYN].  He was a teamster [son's birth cert.].  Cannot locate on 1911 census [cen.].  She was still living in Mar 1940 [LYN].

6a. Elizabeth Susan Tinline.  Born 21 Jun 1865 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cen., OUR].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  She married George William Moody on 24 Dec 1889 in Thamesville District, Ontario [OMR].  He was born 2 Jun 1865 in McGillivray, Middlesex Co., Ontario, son of John and Jane (Gilbert) Moody [cen., OUR].  He was a brick and tile manufacturer [OUR].  In 1891 they were living in Orford [daughter’s birth cert.].  In 1901 they were living in Orford and he was working as a framer, ___ and tile maker [cen. (occupation partly illegible)].  In 1911 they were living in Highgate, Orford and he was working as a brick (?) maker [cen.].  She died 18 Jul 1917 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, Middlesex Co., Ontario, age 52 [cert.].  He died in 1937 [LYN].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN, her death cert.].

4. Janet Tinline.  Born 11 Jun 1826 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg.].  In 1841 she was living in Friars, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, working as a family servant [cen.].  She was a witness to her sister’s marriage in 1841 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1851 she was living at Venchen [Farm], Yetholm, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as a house servant in the home of Robert Oliver [cen.].  She married William Bryden on 28 May 1854 in Roberton, Selkirkshire (first proclamation made 21 May 1854 in Roberton) [reg.].  At the time of their marriage they were both living in Roberton, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [reg.].  He was born c. 1830 in Scotland [cen. (a Jennet Bryden, widow, of the right age to be his mother, was living in Chatham, Kent Co. in 1871)].  In 1865 they were living in Camden, Ontario [daughter’s marr. cert.].  She died 6 Feb 1877 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cert., LYN].  In 1881 he was living in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario, a widower, and was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 5 Mar 1896 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario, age 66 [cert.].  They were both bur. in Duart Cemetery, Orford [LYN].

5. James D. Tinline.  Born 20 Oct 1829 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg.].  Chr. 18 May 1835 in the Gateshaw Associate Session, Morebattle [SCR].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Morebattle [cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his mother in Morebattle, was unmarried, and was working as a journeyman mason [cen.].  He married Mary Jack in 1854 at the Free Church, Morebattle, Roxburghshire [SCR].  She was born 30 Oct 1834 in Ferneyhill, Ednam, Roxburghshire, daughter of Andrew and Jean (Jeffrey) Jack [reg.].  They were living in Linton, Roxburghshire in 1854, when he was a mason at Greenlees, and in Kelso, Roxburghshire in Jul 1856 - May 1872, when he was working as a journeyman mason [reg., SCR, cen., daughter's birth and death certs.].   In 1871 they were living in Kelso, and he was working as a mason [cen.].  They immigrated to Canada in 1873 [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  They were living in Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario in 1884 [Central Canadians].  He died after suffering internal injuries in a fall on 9 May 1900 in Orford Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario, age 67 [cert.].  In 1901 she was living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1911 she was living with her son William in Orford [cen.].  She died 25 Apr 1914 in Orford Twp., Ontario, age 79 [cert.].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [OCFA].  They had children:

1a. Jane Tinline.  Born 25 Sep 1854 in Linton, Roxburghshire [reg.].  Chr. 22 Oct 1854 in the Free Church, Morebattle, Roxburghshire [SCR].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Kelso, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 she was living in Kelso, working as a domestic servant in the home of James A. Rutherford [cen.].  She immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1873 [cen.].  She married Robert Shankie on 12 Dec 1877 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [cen., OMR].  He was born 12 Jan 1852 in Peebleshire, Scotland, son of Robert and Agnes (Proudfoot) Shankie [cen., marr. rec.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Orford and he was working as a farmer [marr. rec.].  In 1881 and 1901 they were living in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Camden Township, Kent East Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died in 1936, age 85 [LYN].  She died c. Nov 1942 in (or near) St. Thomas, Ontario, age 86 [OGS].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].

2a. Hannah Tinline.  Born 25 Jul 1856 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [IGI, SCVL under Finline].  She died of croup on 18 Jan 1859 at 23 Shedden Park Road, Kelso, age 2 and 1/2 [cert.].  She was bur. in Kelso Churchyard [cert.].

3a. Isabella Tinline.  Born 13 May 1858 at 23 Shedden Park Road, Kelso, Roxburghshire [cert.].  In 1861 and 1871 she was living with her parents in Kelso [cen.].  She immigrated to Canada in 1873 [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].   She married Robert Clark Hogg on 25 May 1892 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [marr. rec.].  He was born 24 Jul 1853 in Oneida, Haldimand Co., Ontario, son of John and Margaret (Miller) Hogg [marr. rec.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Orford, working as a farmer, and was a widower, and she was living in Orford [marr. rec.].  In 1901 they were living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario, and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Leamington, South Essex Co., Ontario and he had no occupation [cen.].  He died 8 Sep 1928 in Walkerville, Essex Co., Ontario, age 76, bur. Highgate Cemetery, Orford [cert.].  She died in 1936, age 78 [LYN].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].

4a. Mary Tinline.  Born 1 Apr 1860 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [IGI].  She died 15 Dec 1860 at 23 Shedden Park Road, Kelso, age 8½ months [cert.].  She was bur. in Kelso Churchyard [cert.].

5a. James F. Tinline.  Born 12 Nov 1861 in Kelso, Roxburghshire [IGI, cen. (1901 says 25 Dec 1860 in Scotland; 1911 says Nov 1863 in Ontario)].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Kelso [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Orford, Bothwell Co., Ontario [cen.].  He married Esther Richardson on 8 Jan 1896 in Thamesville, Kent Co., Ontario [cen., OMR, EL, LYN].  She was born 22 Nov 1856 in Ontario, daughter of William and Jane (Crampton) Richardson [cen. (1911 says Nov 1865), LYN].  In 1901 they were living in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Highgate, Orford and he was working as a labourer on the railroad [cen.].  She died 2 May 1941 in Highgate, Orford, age 83 [EL, LYN].  He died in 1950, age 89 [LYN].  They are both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [OCFA].  They had children:

1b. Albert Wesley Tinline.  Born 2 Apr 1897 in Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [cert.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Orford, Elgin Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Highgate, Orford [cen.].  He married Frances Willard Gordon on 7 Mar 1917 [LYN, EL, OGS].  She was born in Aug 1894 in Clifford, LaPeer Co., Michigan, daughter of Elias G. and Emma (Smith) Gordon [LYN, cen.].  They moved to Port Charlotte, Florida, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1967 [St. Petersburg Times, 22 Mar 1967].  She died 9 Jun 1973 in Highgate, Orford, age 79 [LYN].  He died 31 Oct 1983 in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario [LYN].  They were both bur. in Gosnell Cemetery, Highgate, Orford, Kent Co., Ontario [OCFA, LYN].  They had children:
