The Tinlin Family of Norham, Northumberland


Thomas Tinling.  Was living in Monilawes, Northumberland in 1654 [reg.].  Monilawes is now called Moneylaws, and is to the SSE of Cornhill-upon-Tweed, in Carham Parish.  He had a son:

1. Patrick Tinling.  He married Anna Robinson on 29 Oct 1654 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She was the daughter of Robert Robinson of Twisle (Twizel near Cornhill) [reg.].  They were living in Twisle, Norham Parish in Nov 1655, Jan 1674 and in Norham Parish in Sep 1664 [reg.].  They were living in Norham, Norham Parish in Jun 1701 [reg.].  He was bur. on 10 Mar 1707 in Norham Parish, when his residence had been Norham [reg.].  She was bur. on 13 Jan 1712 in Norham Parish, when her residence had been Norham [reg.].  They had children:

1a. Elspeth Tinlin.  Chr. 8 Nov 1655 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg., IGI says Elizabeth].  She is probably the Elspeth Tindell, dau. to Peter Tindele in Twisle (Twizel) who was bur. on 18 Aug 1656 in Norham Parish [there is no other mention of a Peter Tindell/Tinlin etc. in Norham Parish].

2a. James Tindling.  Chr. 11 Sep 1664 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg. under Tindley].  He married Ann Donaldson on 3 Jun 1686 in Norham Parish [reg.].  They lived in Norham, Norham Parish [IGI, reg.].  She was bur. on 24 Mar 1715 in Norham Parish, when her husband’s residence was Norham Castlegate [there are two entries for this event, at the end of one register and the beginning of the next - she is called Mary in the latter] [reg.].  They had children:

1b. Elizabeth Tindling.  Chr. 1 Sep 1689 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI under Tindling]. [Did not find this entry in the register, might have skipped accidentally].

2b. Patrick Tin(d)ling [probably].  He married 1st Elisabeth Scott on 12 Jun 1711 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, both were living in Norham Parish [reg.].  They were living in Norham Castlegate, Norham Parish in Apr 1712, Norham, Norham Parish in Mar 1714 - Oct 1725 [reg., IGI].  She was bur. on 23 Dec 1724 in Norham Parish [reg.].  He apparently married 2nd Elizabeth Fairbarns [Given?] on 9 May 1725 in Norham Parish [IGI]. They lived in Norham Parish [reg.].  He is probably the Patrick Tinling, yeoman of Northumberland, mentioned in a lawsuit in Jamaica [Livingston, who would make it his son].  He was bur. on 14 May 1742 in Norham Parish [reg.].  An Elizabeth Tinling of Norham was buried 12 Mar 1762 in Norham Parish [BT].  He had six children by his first wife and four children by his second wife:

1c. James Tindling.  Chr. 15 Apr 1712 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  A James Tindle of Shellacres was bur. 1 Jul 1792 in Norham Parish [BT].

2c. Thomas Tindling.  Chr. 2 Mar 1714 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He lived in Norham, Norham Parish [IGI].  He (or his son of the same name) was bur. 6 Jan 1776 in Norham Parish, when his residence was Norham [BT].  He may have married Isabel ______ [BT].  She was born c. 1728 [calc.].  She died 10 Apr 1798 in Norham Parish, at which time she was a widow and a pauper, age 70 [BT].  She was bur. the following day in Norham [BT].  They had children:

1d. Patrick Tindling.  Chr. 17 Dec 1749 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

2d. Sarah Tindling.  Chr. 13 Aug 1752 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

3d. Elizabeth Tindling.  Chr. 30 Mar 1755 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

4d. George Tindling.  Chr. 26 Nov 1758 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

5d. Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 17 Apr 1763 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg., BT].

3c. Ann Tinling.  Chr. 15 May 1716 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

4c. Patrick Tinling.  Chr. 22 Jan 1719 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was bur. 5 Jan 1721 in Norham Parish [reg.].

5c. Barbara Tindling.  Chr. 20 Jun 1721 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She was bur. 2 Oct 1725 in Norham Parish [reg.].

6c. William Tindling. Chr. 30 Jan 1724 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI].

7c. Adam Tin(d)ling.  Chr. 14 Jan 1728 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was bur. 10 Feb 1769 in the churchyard, Kingston, Jamaica [reg. as Tingling].  He was a merchant [reg.].  He had a son by Eleanor Clayton, “a free Mulatto woman”:

1d. James Tingling.  Born 11 Aug 1767 and chr. 1 Apr 1768 in Kingston, Jamaica [reg.].

8c. Elizabeth Tindling.  Chr. 6 Dec 1730 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

9c. Elizabeth Tin(d)ling.  Chr. 11 Aug 1734 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI (where her mother’s maiden name is listed as “Given”)].  She married Andrew Morton on 3 Nov 1769 in Doddington Parish, Northumberland [BT].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Doddington [BT].  They had no children in Doddington, so must have moved elsewhere [IGI].  They were mentioned in a lawsuit in Jamaica [Livingston].

10c. Alison Tindlin.  Chr. 6 Aug 1738 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  Apparently the same as Alice Tinling who married 1st John Taite on 12 Jun 1764 in Chillingham Parish, Northumberland [reg., Livingston].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Chillingham Parish, and she was living in Bambrough (Bamburgh) Parish [reg.]. She married 2nd William Bryden after 1769 [Livingston].  He was a baker from Northumberland [Livingston].  They were mentioned in a lawsuit in Jamaica [Livingston].

3b. James Tindling.  Chr. 4 Feb 1692 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg. under Tindling].  He married Isabel (or Isabella) Ogle on 3 May 1716 in Norham Parish [IGI].  He was bur. on 7 Mar 1743 in Norham Parish  [reg.].  Probably the James Tinlin who left an administration dated 1743 [MP].  She was bur. on 9 Oct 1746 in Norham Parish [reg.].  At the time of their deaths, both had been living in Norham, Norham Parish [reg.].

4b. Barbara Tinling.  Chr. 28 Mar 1697 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  She married Humphrey Patterson on 9 Jun 1720 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI under Barbrey Tindling].  They did not have any children in Norham [IGI].  A Barbara Patterson, "wife of Humphrey Patterson", was bur. in Tweedmouth, Northumberland on 13 Jan 1778, when her residence had been Spittle [BT].  A Humphrey Patterson was bur. on 19 Jan 1779 in Tweedmouth, Northumberland [FHO]. 

3a. daughter Tindley.  Chr. in Jan 1670 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI under Tindley].  [Possibly Phillice (see below).]

4a. Thomas Tindling.  Chr. 11 Jan 1674 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg. under Tindling]. He married Elizabeth Weddle on 8 Nov 1698 in Norham Parish [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, both were living in Norham Parish [reg.].   They lived in Norham, Norham Parish [reg.].  She was bur. on 3 Apr 1738 in Norham Parish, when she was called a dissenter [reg.].  He was bur. on 22 Feb 1739 in Norham Parish [reg.].  They had children:

1b. Ann Tindling.  Chr. 21 Sep 1699 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg. under Tindling].  She was bur. on 24 Jul 1701 in Norham Parish [reg.].

2b. Thomas Tindling.  Chr. 10 Jun 1703 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

5a. Phillice Tindling.  She was bur. on 30 Jun 1701 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

Elisabeth Tindling.  Married William Ferrar on 26 Nov 1691 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].

Isabell Tindling.  [Possibly a daughter of Patrick and Anna (Robinson) Tinling.]  Married William Ferrar on 6 Nov 1705 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, both were living in Norham Parish [reg.].

Thomas Tindling.  Married Sarah Weddell on 7 Jun 1715 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [IGI].

Peter Tindling.  Living in Norham Parish, Northumberland in May 1726 [reg.].  [Apparently a nickname for Patrick Tindling who married Elisabeth Scott and Elizabeth Fairbarns].  He had children:

1a. William Tindling.  Chr. 30 Jan 1724 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].  He was bur. on 7 Dec 1724 in Norham Parish [reg.].

2a. Peter Tindling.  Chr. 22 May 1726 in Norham Parish, Northumberland [reg.].
