The Tinlin Family of Paulding County, Ohio

This is undoubtedly a branch of the Tinlin families of NETHER ANCRUM/BINBROOK.

John Calvin Tinlin.  Born 8 Dec 1843 in Louth Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario, father born in Canada, mother born in New York (probably son of John and Sarah (Hainer) Tinlin) [CG, cen.].  His father is said to have also been named John [AW].  In 1861 he was living with his relative (brother?) James Augustus Tinlin in Louth, Lincoln Co., Ontario [cen.].  He immigrated to the U.S. in 1862 or 1870 [cen.].  Have not located in 1870 or 1880 census records [cen.].  He married Sarah Jane Silvers [AF, CSC].  She is thought to have been a full-blooded Blackfoot Indian [AW].   She was born c. 1862 in [probably Darke Co.,] Ohio, daughter of William and Eliza Silvers [cen.].  She was said to have left the family, taking the youngest child, Melvin, with her [CG].  In 1900 he was living in Payne, Paulding Co., Ohio, working as a day laborer [cen.].  He was married, but his wife was not listed with him [cen.].  In 1910 he was living at the Cobb & Mitchell Lumber Company Camp, Chandler Twp., Charlevoix Co., Michigan, was listed as single, and was working as a laborer [cen.].  In May 1918 he was living in Ohio [CG].  Have not located either of them on any further census records [cen.].  He died 7 Oct 1929 at the Poor Farm, Charlevoix Co., Michigan [CG].  They had children:

1. Flora A. Tinlin.  Born in Jul 1881 in Ohio [cen.]. She married 1st Chris Martin on 5 Jan 1899 in Paulding Co., Ohio [Anc.].  In 1900 she was living with her father in Payne, Paulding Co., Ohio [cen.].  She was married, but her husband was not listed with her [cen.].  She married 2nd David Nath[an?]ial Martin in 1905 [CG, cen.].  He was born 22 May 1882 (or 1883 or 84) in Monroeville, Allen, Indiana, son of Alvan L. and Louise Jane (Parker) Martin [World Connect, cen., Anc.].  In 1910 they were living in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana and he was working as a machinist at a machine shop [cen.].  She died 5 May 1918 in Ft. Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, age 36, bur. Lindenwood Cemetery, Ft. Wayne [CG, Anc. (says 24 May) as Florence F.].  In 1920 he was living with his parents and son in Fort Wayne, a widower, working as a machinist in the railroad shops [cen.].  In 1930 he was living in Fort Wayne with a second wife and their child, and was working as a machinist [cen.].  He died 13 Jul 1965 in Ft. Wayne [World Connect].

2. James A. Tinlin.  Born 7 Apr 1884 in Ohio [AF, cen., Anc.].  Cannot locate him on 1900 or 1910 census.  He married Leah E. Spaulding on 15 Mar 1911 in Durand, Shiawassee Co., Michigan [reg.].  She was born in Aug 1874 in Vernon Twp., Shiawassee, Michigan, daughter of Nelson A. and Emma (Jewell) Spaulding, and later step-daughter of Oscar W. Peck [cen., Anc., AF, marr. rec. (gives mother's maiden surname as Huff)].  In 1910 she was living in Durand and was single [cen.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Durand; he was working as a brakeman and she as a dressmaker [marr. rec.].  In 1920 they were living in Durand, and he was working as a station engineer [cen.].  In 1930 he was staying as a boarder in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan and had no occupation, while she was living with her parents in Durand [cen.]. They divorced at some point [AF].  He died 24 Feb 1936 in Durand, Shiawassee Co., Michigan, bur. Byron Cemetery [AF].  She died in or after 1942 [Anc., AF].  They had children:

1a. Leon Deloss Tinlin.  Born 20 Sep 1912 in Shiawassee, Michigan [AF, SS].  In 1920 he was living with his parents in Durand, Michigan [cen.]. In 1930 he was living with his mother and grandparents in Durand [cen.].  He married Leona Kathryn Unger [RA].  She was born 16 Jun 1913 in Michigan, daughter of William F. and Christina H. (Yantz) Unger [cen., JRT, SS].  They lived in Michigan [JRT].  He died 31 Aug 1973, benefits sent to Nice, Lake Co., California [SS, CS].  He was bur. in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Shiawassee Co., Michigan [Internet].  She died 17 Dec 2006 in Union City, Alameda Co., California [SS].  They had children:

2b. Robert Wesley Tinlin.  Born 23 May 1932 [SS].  He married 1st Clara May Edwards on 17 Nov 1950 in Richmond, Contra Costa Co., California [JRT]. She was born 19 Feb 1935 in Gridley, Butte Co., California, the daughter of Elvin Joseph and Leona Clara (Adams) Edwards [JRT, RA].  They divorced in Sep 1966 in Seminole Co., Florida, and she remarried in Florida in 1969 [Anc.].  He married 2nd Era M. William Hencel Tinlin.  Born 23 May 1888 in Harrison Township, Paulding Co., Ohio [cen., VR index, Anc., CSC].  In 1900 he was living with his [foster] grandparents William H. and Mary Ketner in Jackson Twp., Paulding Co., Ohio [cen.].  He married Florence Christine "Tena Bessie" Ross in c. 1907 [cen., daughter’s obit.].  She was born 19 May 1888 in Paulding Co., Ohio, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Keck) Ross [cen., CSC, obit.].  In 1910 they were living in Broughton, Paulding Co., Ohio, and he was working as a railroad laborer [cen.].  In 1920 they were living in Latty, Paulding Co., Ohio [cen.].  In 1930 they were living in Broughton, Paulding Co., and he was working as a railroad laborer [cen.].  In 1942 they were living in Latty and he was working for the Latty Board of Education [draft card].  He died 13 May 1956 and was buried in Hedges Cemetery, Paulding Co., Ohio [CSC, ODI].  She died 1 Oct 1972 in Paulding Co. and was buried in Hedges Cemetery there [ODI, CSC, Van Wert Times Bulletin, 2 Oct 1972].  They had children:

William Edward Tinlin.  Born 26 Sep 1910 in Paulding Co., Ohio [SS, obit.].  In 1920 he was living with his parents in Latty, Paulding Co., Ohio [cen.].  In 1930 he was living with his parents in Broughton, Paulding Co., was single, and was working as a railroad laborer [cen.].  He married Mary Elizabeth Shultz on 29 Dec 1936 [her obit.].  She was born 8 Aug 1915, daughter of Homer and Rose Ellen Shultz [obit.].  He died 1 Apr 1975 in Paulding Co., Ohio and was bur. in Hedges Cemetery there [SS, ODI, CSC, Van Wert Times Bulletin, 3 Apr 1975].  She died 14 Feb 2005 in Broughton, Ohio, bur.
