The George Tinline Family of Sprouston, Roxburghshire


This is probably a branch of the TINLINE of ANCRUM family, but there were two George Tinlines born in Crailing within a short time period.

George Tinline.  Born c. 1773-76 in Crailing, Roxburghshire [cen.].  Married Janet Bryden [son’s mar. cert.].  She was born c. 1790-1 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire, daughter of John and Isabella (Johnston) Bryden [cen., death cert.].  They were living in Graitney (Gretna), Dumfriesshire in Mar 1815 [reg.].   Living in Ancrum, Roxburghshire in 1815-20 [cen.].  Living in Nisbet, Sprouston, Roxburghshire in Jan 1826 [son’s mar. cert.].   In 1841 they were living in Lempitlaw East Field, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a general laborer [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Muirdean, Makerston, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a farm servant [cen.].  He worked as a hind and a gardener [children’s mar. certs.].  He died before 31 May 1855 [son’s mar. cert.].  In 1861 she was living in Eastfield, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, a widow [cen.].  She died 3 Jul 1867 at Eastfield, Sprouston, age 77 [cert.].  They had children:

1. William Tinlin.  Born in Jun 1812 in Dirsdel [Dryfesdale?] or Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire and chr. 5 Mar 1815 in Graitney (Gretna), Dumfriesshire [cen., reg. under Tinlaine].  He married Alison Jardine [cen., SCR].  She was born 28 Nov 1812 in Linton, Roxburghshire, daughter of John and Catherine (Wright) Jardine [reg. as Jerdan, cen.].  In 1841-44 they were living in Roxburgh Mill, Roxburgh, and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen., reg.].  They were living in Linton, Roxburghshire in Sep 1846, then again in Newtown, Roxburgh in 1849-52, when he was working as a farm servant [cen., reg.].  In 1861 they were living in Hadden, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a farm servant. [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Carham, Northumberland, and he was working as an agricultural servant [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Carham, Northumberland and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Akeld, Northumberland, and he was a retired agricultural laborer [cen.].  He died 2nd quarter 1891 in Glendale District (Northumberland), age 78 [CR].  She died 2nd quarter 1895 in Belford District (Northumberland), age 82 [CR].  They had children:

1a. Catharine Tinline.  Born 27 Jul 1842 at Roxburgh Mill, Roxburghshire, and chr. there 28 Aug 1842 [reg., cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Newtown, Roxburgh [cen.].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Hadden, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, working as an agricultural laborer, and was unmarried [cen.].  She married William Robson on 31 Dec 1869 in Sprouston [IGI].  He was born c. 1845 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 they were living at Caverton Millhead, Eckford, Roxburghshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1881 they were living at Wester Ulston, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and he was working as a farm servant [cen.].  In 1891 they were living at East Howlaws, Greenlaw, Berwickshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at Cowdenknowes Mains Hinds Cottage, Earlston, Berwickshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer and cattleman [cen.].  She died on 25 Oct 1907 in Conder Knows Mains (?), Earlston, Berwickshire, age 64 [cert.].  He survived her [cert.].

2a. Janet Tinline.  Born 9 Aug 1844 at Roxburgh Mill, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, and chr. 8 Sep 1844 in Roxburgh [SCR].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Newtown, Roxburgh [cen.].  In 1861 she was living in Lempitlaw, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, working as a housemaid [cen.].  In 1871 she was living in Tweedmouth, Northumberland, working as a laundry maid [cen.].  She married James Logan in 1st quarter 1874 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, Internet].  He was born 15 Jul 1845 in East Ord, Northumberland, son of ______ and Ann Logan [cen., MLG].  In 1881 they were living in Westgate, Newcastle, and he was working as a grocers shopman [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Westgate, and he was working as a grocer’s assistant [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at 130 Brinkburn Ave., Gateshead, Durham and he was working as a grocer shopman [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Newcastle [cen. index].

3a. George Tinlin(e).  Born 11 Sep 1846 in Linton, Roxburghshire, chr. 17 Oct 1846 at Gateshaw Associate Session, Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Newtown, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Hadden, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Carham, Northumberland, working as an agricultural servant [cen.].  He married Jane Smith in 1st quarter 1874 in Glendale District (Northumberland) [CR, cen.].  She was born c. 1849 in Stamford or Embleton, Northumberland [cen. (others say 1839 or 1842)].  In 1881 they were living in Carham, Northumberland and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in East Learmouth, Carham, and he was working as a farm steward [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland and he was working as a farm steward [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Berwick District, Northumberland, and she was apparently also listed with her son William (as Jeane Tinlin, but 10 years too old) [cen. index].  In 1914 they were living at Horncliffe Loan End, Norham, and he was working as a farmer [dir.].  He died 21 Mar 1920 in Cheviot View, Horncliffe, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland [MI of Norham, CR].  She died 22 Mar 1933 in Berwick District (Northumberland), age 83 [MI of Norham, CR].  They had children:

1b. Jane Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1874 in Mindrim Mill, Northumberland [cen., CR].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  She died 26 Jul 1888 in Mindrum Mill, Northumberland, age 13 [MI of Norham].

2b. Alice Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1876 in Mindrim Mill, Carham, Northumberland [cen., CR].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in East Learmouth, Carham, working as an outdoor worker [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland, working as domestic mother’s help [cen.].  She married Robert Davidson in 2nd quarter 1901 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [cen.].  They were living in Berwick District in 1st quarter 1916 [CR].

3b. William Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1879 in Mindrim Mill, Northumberland [cen., CR].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in East Learmouth, Carham [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, working as a machine worker in a factory [cen.].  He married Ethel Jane Hardy in 2nd quarter 1910 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  She was born c. 1883 [calc.].  In 1911 they were living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [cen. index].  They were living in Castle Ward District (Northumberland) in 1913, 1915, and 1916 [CR].  He died in 2nd quarter 1950 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 71 [CR].  She died in 2nd quarter 1951 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 67 [CR].  They had children:

1c. Alison C. Patterson Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1913 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland) [CR].  She married Norman Davison in 4th quarter 1935 in Morpeth District (Northumberland) [CR].  He predeceased her [her obit.].  She died 27 Sep 2003 in Morpeth, Northumberland [obit.]. 2c. Elizabeth Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1915 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland) [CR].  She married Robert R. Gray in 4th quarter 1941 in Northumberland South District [CR].

3c. William Douglas Tinlin.  Born 17 Dec 1916 in Castle Ward District (Northumberland) [CR under 1st quarter 1917].  He married Jean Dorothy Strike in 3rd quarter 1949 in Northumberland South District [CR].  She was born 26 Mar 1920 [CR].  He died in 4th quarter 1971 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR under Douglas William Tinlin].  She died in 3rd quarter 1983 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].  They had children:

1d. Michael D. Tinlin.  Born in [DR] in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR].

4b. Mary Tinlin.  Born 2nd quarter 1881 in Carham, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in East Learmouth, Carham [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland working as domestic mother’s help [cen.].   She married Thomas Speedy in 2nd quarter 1909 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  He was born in 3rd quarter 1877 in Ford, Northumberland, son of Robert and Ann Speedy [cen., cen. index].  In 1911 they were living in Berwick District [cen. index].  In 1918 and 1920 they were living in Berwick District [CR].

5b. Thomas Tinlin.  Born in either 1st quarter or 3rd quarter 1885 in Carham, Northumberland [CR].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in East Learmouth, Carham [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland, working as a general labourer on a farm [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Berwick District, Northumberland [cen. index].  He married Mary Purvis in 2nd quarter 1918 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  She was born c. 1894 [calc.].  In 1946 they were living at Grizzlerig, Coldstream [daughter’s marr. notice].  She died in 1958 in Coldstream District, Berwickshire, age 64 [SCVL].  He died in 1978 in Coldstream District, Berwickshire, age 93 [SCVL].  They had children:

1c. Mary Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1919 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  She married Thomas Brotherston on 19 Jul 1946 at Leitholm Church, Coldstream, Berwickshire [The Scotsman, 20 Jul 1946, page 8, SCVL].  He was the son of the late Thomas Brotherston and of Mrs. Brotherston of Leitholm [The Scotsman].

2c. George Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1923 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  Probably the George Tinlin who married Isabella Dodds in 1951 in Eccles District, Berwickshire [SCVL].

3c. Ethel Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1927 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  She married George Greig Logan in 1958 in Eccles District, Berwickshire [SCVL].  She died in 1991 in Kelso District, Scottish Borders, age 64 [SCVL].

6b. John Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1887 in Carham, Northumberland [calc., CWGC, cen., CR].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in East Learmouth, Carham [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Berwick District, Northumberland [cen. index].  He was a private in the 2nd Batallion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers [CWGC].  He died 30 Jul 1918, age 30, bur. in the Tannay British Cemetery, Thiennes, France [CWGC, SCVL, GRO War Deaths].  His name is inscribed on a monument in Horncliffe, Northumberland [Internet].

7b. Georgina Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1890 in Carham, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in Carham [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 she was living with her parents in Berwick District, Northumberland [cen. index].  She married Arthur Edward Wilson in 1st quarter 1917 in Berwick District (Northumberland) [CR].  They were living in Berwick District in 1920 and in Gateshead District in 1926 [CR].

8b. Janet Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1892 in Carham, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents at Unthank Farm, Ord, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 she was living with her parents in Berwick District, Northumberland [cen. index].

4a. John Tinline.  Born 29 Jul 1849 at Newtown, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, and chr. 19 Aug 1849 in Roxburgh [reg.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Newtown, Roxburgh [cen.].  He died 30 Apr 1860, age 10, at Nottylees Farm, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, “killed by the fall of a stone” [cert.].  He was bur. in Sprouston Churchyard [cert.].

5a. Andrew Tinlin.  Born 9 Sep 1856 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen., SCR, SCVL, IGI].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Hadden, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Carham, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Carham, Northumberland, was unmarried, and was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].   He married Helen Robson in 2nd quarter 1885 in Glendale District (Northumberland) [CR].  She was born c. 1865 in Scotland [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Akeld, Northumberland, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Preston, Northumberland, and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  In 1911 they were living in Belford District, Northumberland [cen. index].  He died in 4th quarter 1932 in Alnwick District (Northumberland), age 76 [CR].  She died in 4th quarter 1934 in Belford District (Northumberland), age 70 [CR].  They had children:

William John Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1893 in Fenton, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Preston, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Belford District, Northumberland [cen. index].  He married Mabel G. Woods in 2nd quarter 1919 in Yarmouth District (Norfolk) [CR].  She was born c. 1896 (probably in Gorleston, Suffolk, daughter of George A. and Eliza M. A. Woods) [calc.].  They were living in Belford District (Northumberland) in 1920 [CR].  She died in 3rd quarter 1965 in Northumberland North 2nd District, age 69 [CR].  He died in 1st quarter 1966 in Northumberland Central District, age 72 [CR].  They had children:

Joan Irene Tinlin.  Born 28 Mar 1920 in Belford District (Northumberland) [CR].  She was a civil servant [London Gazette, 26 Sep 1997].  She died unmarried on 19 Sep 1997 in Northumberland North Second District [CR, London Gazette].  At the time of her death, her address had been 2 Lindisfarne Road, Alnwick, Northumberland [London Gazette].

James Andrew Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1898 in Preston, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Preston, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Belford District, Northumberland [cen.].  He married Edith Sophia Hope Archbold in 1st quarter 1924 in Belford District [CR].  She was born in 1st quarter 1903 in Belford District, Northumberland [CR].  They emigrated to Australia.  In 1949 they were living at 856 Military Road, Mosman, New South Wales, and he was working as a baker's assistant [VOR].  In 1954 she was listed at 25 Cadd Street, Fremantle, Western Australia [VOR].  They had children:

1c. Sylvia I. Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1924 in Lanchester District (Durham) [CR].  She died 2nd quarter 1926 in Morpeth District (Northumberland), age 2 [CR].

Cynthia Edith Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1927 in Morpeth District (Northumberland) [CR].  In 1949 she was living with her parents and working as a nurse [VOR].  In 1954 she was living at 152 Edinburgh Road, Willoughby, North Sydney, working as a nurse [VOR].  She married Walter Iman Kommer in 1954 in Mosman District, New South Wales [NSW].

3c. Kathleen Helen Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1933 in Gateshead District (Durham) [CR].  She married Allan Hamilton Coote in 1957 in Sydney District, New South Wales [NSW].

3b. George Robert Tinlin.  Born 3rd quarter 1900 in Preston, Northumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Preston, Northumberland [cen.].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Belford District, Northumberland [cen. index].  He died in 1st quarter 1942 in Northumberland North 1st District, age 41 [CR].

6a. William Tinline.  Born 28 Sep 1852 in Newtown, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire and chr. 31 Oct 1852 in Roxburgh [reg.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Hadden, Sprouston, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 he was living in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, working as a journeyman tailor [cen.].  He married Mary Young in 1st quarter 1879 in Southampton District (Hampshire) [CR, cen.].  She was born c. 1855 in Southampton [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Southampton and he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Southampton and he was a tailor and a sergeant in the Royal Engineers [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Southampton and he was working as a tailor [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1906 in South Stoneham District (Hampshire), age 51 [CR].  In 1908 he was living at 51a, Bedford Place, Southampton [London Gazette, 21 Jul 1908].  In 1911 he was living at 21 Carlton Place, Southampton, working as a tailor [dir., cen. index].  He died 2nd quarter 1917 in Chelsea District (Middlesex), age 63 [CR].  They had children:

William Alexander Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1880 in Southampton, Hampshire [CR, cen.].  In 1881 and 1891 he was living with his parents in Southampton [cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Southampton, working for the General Post Office [cen.].  He married Lila Emily Barker on 4 Apr 1908 at St. Mary's, Acton, Middlesex [reg.].  She was born in 1st quarter 1883 in Bow, London, daughter of John and Sarah Alice Barker [CR, cen., marr. reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 37 Canonbury Street, Essex Road, Canonbury, working as a clerk in the Civil Service, and she was living at Dalton Villas, Mill Hill, Acton [reg.].  In 1910 and 1915 he was living in London, working in the Money Order Department of the General Post Office [dir.].  In 1911 they were living in Brentford District and were living there in 1913 and 1921 [cen. index, CR].  He was promoted to Captain on 26 Mar 1920 in the 14th Battalion, London Regiment [London Gazette, 23 Mar 1920, BSD].  He relinquished his commission from the 14th Battalion on 15 Mar 1930 [London Gazette, 14 Mar 1930].  He died in 1st quarter 1965 in Ealing District, age 85 [CR]. She died in 2nd quarter 1966 in Hendon District (Middlesex), age 83 [CR].  They had children:

1c. William Ronald Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1913 in Brentford District, Middlesex [CR].  He married Elaine Joy McMurtrie in 2nd quarter 1945 in Northumberland South District [CR].  She was born 21 Jan 1918 in Hexham, Northumberland, daughter of Radburn Angus and Ethel Maud (Wilkins) McMurtrie [Internet].  She died c. 1980 [Internet].  They had children:

1d. Ian R. Tinlin.  Born in [DR] in Aled District, Cheshire [CR].  He was living in Southport, Merseyside in 2003 [dir.].

2d. Peter A. M. Tinlin.  Born in [DR] in Cirencester District [CR].  He married 1st Annelise H. Fjortoft in [DR] in Durham CSE District [CR].  She was the daughter of Jonas Emil and Helen Isobel (Weir) Fjortoft [London Times, 4 Oct 1946, pg. 1].  They divorced and both remarried [CR].  He married 2nd Deborah Hawkins or Clowes in [DR] in Chilton/South Buckinghamshire District [CR].  He was living in Suffolk in 2002 [CR].  He had two children by his first wife and one by his second:

1e. Alexander Emil Tinlin.  Born [DR] in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire [CR, Internet].  A composer of music for the viola d’amore, including a Concerto Grosso [Internet].  He graduated from Goldsmith’s College, London in 2000 [Internet].

2e. Rolf William J. Tinlin.  Born [DR] in Wycombe District (Buckinghamshire) [CR].  Attending the University of East Anglia c. 1998 [Internet].  He was living in Felixstowe, Suffolk in 2003 [dir.].

3e. Eleanor Ruth Tinlin.  Born in or shortly before [DR] in Haywards Heath District, West Sussex [CR].

2c. Eileen Mary Tinlin.  Born 21 Sep 1921 in Brentford District (Middlesex) [CR].  She died in or shortly before Nov 1999 in South Warwickshire District, apparently unmarried [CR].

2b. Jane Agnes Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1885 in Southampton, Hampshire [CR, cen.].  In 1891 and 1901 she was living with her parents in Southampton [cen.].  She married William F. G. White in 1st quarter 1911 in Southampton District [CR].  They were living in Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1911-15 [CR].

3b. John Webster Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1888 in Southampton, Hampshire [CR, cen.].  In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents in Southampton [cen.].  He married Rosina Nellie Stride in 2nd quarter 1920 in Southampton District [CR].  She was born 18 Jul 1892 in Southampton, daughter of William and Kate Stride [CR, cen.].  He died in 1st quarter 1956 in Southampton District, age 67 [CR].  She died in 1st quarter 1974 in Southampton District [CR under Roseila Nellie Tinlin].  They had children:

1c. Rosemary K. Tinlin.  Born 25 Apr 1923 in Southampton District, Hampshire [CR as Rose M. K. Tinlin].  She married Ernest G. Oxby in 3rd quarter 1945 in Southampton District [CR].  He was born 4th quarter 1925 in Grimsby District, son of Ernest and Alice A. (Dalton) Oxby [CR].  She died in or shortly before Nov 1993 in Winchester District, Hampshire [CR].

2c. Phyllis M. Tinlin.  Born 1st quarter 1930 in Southampton District (Hampshire) [CR].  She married Denis E. Harding in 1st quarter 1952 in Southampton District [CR].

2. John Tinline.  Born c. 1815 in Ancrum or Sprouston, Roxburghshire, or in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire [cen., 1881 gives mother’s name as Janet McDougall].  Chr. 5 Mar 1815 in Graitney (Gretna), Dumfriesshire [reg. under Tinlaine].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Lempitlaw East Field, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].   He married 1st Margaret Jervis on 16 Feb 1846 in Sprouston [reg.].  She was born c. 1821 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire, daughter of James and Betsy (Baker) Jervis [cen. (1871 says born in England), death cert.
