The Tinling Families of Suffolk

The IGI contains very few parish records from the county of Suffolk, and the records themselves are not generally available on microfilm, so it is difficult to tell if these are true Tinling families, or simply misspellings of other names.  I certainly have not found any other mention of them as of yet.

William Tenling.  Married Elizabeth Ricker on 7 Sep 1761 in Suffolk [IGI].  They had children:

1. Mary Tenling.  Chr. 12 Jun 1774 in Stowupland, Suffolk [IGI].

2. [Possibly] Elizabeth Tinling.  Born c. 1777 [calc.].  She was bur. 9 Sep 1820 at All Saints, Wickhambrook, Suffolk, age 43 [FHO].  At the time of her death, she had been living at Depden [VD – says age 46 at death].  Wickhambrook is southwest of Bury St. Edmunds.

Thomas Tinling.  Possibly the Thomas Tenning who married Mary Halstead on 1 Oct 1761 in Suffolk [IGI].  He had children:

Mary Tinling.  Born c. 1766 in Suffolk [cen.].  In 1841 she was living in Stutton, Suffolk and was working as a farm servant [cen.].  She was bur. 12 Jul 1849 in St. Peter’s, Stutton, Suffolk, age 83 [FHO].  Stutton is south of Ipswich.

Mary Tinling.  Possibly the same as the above.  Living in Suffolk in 1796, and in Cockfield, Suffolk in May 1797 and Apr 1806 [Internet, IGI, FHO].  Cockfield is southeast of Bury St. Edmunds.  She had two natural daughters:

1a. Mary Talbot(t) Tinling.  Born 10 Aug 1796 [IGI].  Chr. 6 Nov 1796 in Suffolk [IGI].  Bur. 15 May 1797 at St. Peter’s, Cockfield, Suffolk, an infant [FHO].  Perhaps the name Talbot indicates the surname of her father.

2a. Mary Tinling.  Born 7 Jun 1799 [Internet].  She was christened on 10 Apr 1806 in Cockfield, Suffolk [Internet].  She could be the Mary "Jinling", born in Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, who married George Deeks on 25 Jul 1819 in Hadleigh, Suffolk [IGI, cen.].  He was born c. 1795 in Hadleigh [cen.].  In 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 they were living in Benton Street, Hadleigh and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He died in 4th quarter 1880 in Cosford District, Suffolk, age 84 [CR].  In 1881 she was living at the Benton Street Alms House, Hadleigh, a widow [cen.].  She died in 4th quarter 1882 in Cosford District, age 84 [CR].  One of their children was named Charlotte, which could be a connection to the other Tinlings of Suffolk.  An Emily Dicks, chr. in 1830 in Suffolk, had Thomas Tinling as a maternal grandfather [FHO].

Richard Tinling.  Born c. 1732 [cal.].  He married Lydia ______ [daughters' chr. and bur. records].  She was born c. 1739 [cal.].  She was bur. 17 Feb 1800 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.  She had been in the workhouse and was about 60 years of age [reg.].  He was bur. 16 Oct 1800 in Bury St. Edmunds, age 68 [reg.].  They had children:

1a. Lydia Tinling.  She apparently died young, and was bur. 8 Jul 1770 at St. Nicholas, Yarmouth, Norfolk [reg.].

2a. Charlotte Tinling.  Chr. 25 Oct 1771 in Gunthorpe, Norfolk [reg.].  She married John Underwood on 4 Aug 1808 in Brampton, Suffolk [IGI].  In 1841 she was living with her son John at St. Mary's at the Walls, Colchester, Essex [cen.].  In 1851 she was living as a lodger at 5 Union Terrace, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk [cen.].  [A Charlotte Underwood was bur. 3 May 1856 in Whepstead, Suffolk, age 84 (FHO)].  Brampton is northwest of Southwold.

3a. Charles Boyce Tinling.  Bur. 30 Dec 1778 at St. Mary’s, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk [FHO, FSR].

4a. Sophia Tinling.  Bur. 5 Sep 1780 in St. Mary’s, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk [FHO, FSR].
