The Tinling Family of Westward, Cumberland


This is a branch of the TINLING of KIRKLINTON family.  There were two Edward Tinlings christened in Brampton in 1804, one the son of Edward and Mary (Addison) Tinling, the other the natural son of Jane Tinling.  This Edward was probably the former, but this has not been confirmed yet.

Edward Tinling.  Born c. 1804 in Brampton, Cumberland [cen.].  He married Jane Musgrave on 15 May 1831 in Wigton, Cumberland [IGI under Finning].  She was born c. 1806 in Walton, Cumberland [cen.].  They were living in Irthington (near Brampton), Cumberland in Nov 1831, Thursby, Cumberland in Jul 1835, and in Westward, Cumberland in Nov 1842, Mar 1845 and Feb 1848 [IGI under Tinling, Tinninger, Tinnion].  In 1851 they were living at Watch Tree Cottages, Aikton, Cumberland and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  She died 1 Oct 1856 at Watch Tree House, Aikton, Cumberland, age 50 [cert.].   In 1860 he was called a steward [daughter's marr. rec.].  Cannot locate him on the 1861 census.  In 1871 he was living in Wetheral, Cumberland, a widower, and was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  He died 2nd quarter 1874 in Carlisle District (Cumberland), age 70 [CR].  They had children:

1. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 17 Nov 1831 in Irthington Parish, Cumberland [IGI].

2. Joseph Tinling.  Born c. 1834 and chr. 19 Jul 1835 in Thursby, Cumberland [marr. cert., cen., IGI under Tenninger].  He is not listed with his parents on the 1851 census [cen.].  He married Elizabeth Roberts on 17 Aug 1858 at St. Mary’s Church, Grassendale, Lancashire [cert.].  She was born c. 1829-31 in Llansilin, Shropshire, daughter of William Roberts, a farmer [cert., cen. (1861 says Trefonen), not in IGI, calc.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at 40 Hampton St., Toxteth Park, Lancashire working as a joiner and she was living in Grassendale [cert.].  They were living in Liverpool, Lancashire in Jul 1859 [IGI].  In 1861 they were living in West Derby, Lancashire and he was working as a joiner [cen.].  They were living at 15 Portwood Street, West Derby in Jun 1862, and he was working as a journeyman joiner [son’s birth cert.].  He died 2nd quarter 1870 in West Derby District (Lancashire), age 35 [CR].  In 1871 she was living in West Derby and was working as a seamstress [cen.].  In 1881, 1891, and 1901 she was living in Toxteth Park, a widow, running a boarding/lodging house [cen.].  In 1911 she was living at 5 Ducie Street, Liverpool, a widow, and a boarding house keeper [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1917 in West Derby District (Lancashire), age 88 [CR].  They had children:

1a. William Edward Tinling.  Born 2 Jul 1859 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire, and chr. 31 Jul 1859 in Saint Peter’s, Liverpool, Lancashire [CR, IGI, cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in West Derby, Lancashire [cen.].  In 1871 he was living with his mother in West Derby, Lancashire [cen.].  In 1881 he was unmarried and living with his mother in Toxteth Park, Lancashire, working as a commerical provisions clerk [cen.].  He married Edith Helen Gwynne on 4 Sep 1889 in Wavertree, Lancashire [CR, BVRI].  She was born c. 1860 in Liverpool, daughter of John Gwynne [BVRI, cen.].  In 1891 they were living with his mother in Toxteth Park, Lancashire, and he was working as a commercial traveller [cen.].  In 1911 they were living at 27 Brierfield Road, Wavertree, Liverpool and he was working as a commercial traveller for a provision merchant [cen.].  He died in 1st quarter 1929 in West Derby District, age 69 [CR].  She died in 2nd quarter 1944 in Liverpool South District, age 83 [CR].

2a. George Tinling.  Born 20 Jun 1862 at 15 Portwood Street, West Derby, Lancashire [cert.].  He died 2nd quarter 1862 in West Derby District [CR].

3a. [probably] Joseph Musgrave Tinling.  Born 2nd quarter 1869 in West Derby District, Lancashire [CR].  He died 2nd quarter 1870 in West Derby District (Lancashire), age 1 [CR].

3. Jane Tinling.  Born in Westward, Cumberland, and chr. there 27 Nov 1842 [IGI under Tinnion, cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Aitken, Cumberland [cen. (says born in Lowling, Cumberland)].  Cannot locate in 1861 census index.  In 1871 she was living with her father in Wetheral, Cumberland, was unmarried, and was working as a housekeeper [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in Crosby On Eden, Cumberland, was unmarried and was working as a sewing mistress [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1885 in Carlisle District (Cumberland), age 43, apparently unmarried [CR].

4. Margaret Tinling.  Chr. 30 Mar 1845 in Westward, Cumberland [IGI under Tinnion].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Aitken, Cumberland [cen. (says born in Lowling, Cumberland)].  In 1861 she was living with her brother Joseph in West Derby, Lancashire, working as a house servant [cen.].  She married William Barker on 6 Dec 1870 at St. Matthew's, St. Pancras, London [reg., CR (under Finling)].  He was born c. 1841 in Stowmarket, Suffolk, son of Robert and Elizabeth Barker, and was a widower [cen., marr. rec.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living at 125 Grove Street and he was a police constable [marr. rec.].  In 1871 they were living at 145 Grove Street, St. Pancras, and he was a police constable [cen.].  In 1881 they were living at No. 4, Phoenix Cottages, Dollis Lane, Finchley, London, and he was a police constable [cen.].  In 1891 they were living at 43 Bradford Road, Portsea, Hampshire, and he was an Inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children [cen.].  She died in 4th quarter 1893 in Portsea District, Hampshire, age 47 [CR].  In 1901 he was living at the same address and had the same occupation and was a widower [cen.].

5. Edward Tinling.  Born c. 1848 in Wigton or Westward, Cumberland, and chr. 6 Feb 1848 in Westward [cen., IGI under Tinnion].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Aikten, Cumberland [cen. (says born in Lowling, Cumberland)].  Cannot locate in 1861 census.  In 1871 he was living in Stanwix, Cumberland, working as a farm servant [cen.].  He married Margaret Story on 7 Jun 1871 in Crosby upon Eden Parish, Cumberland [CR, IGI].  She was born c. 1840 in Harker Rockliffe, Stanwix, Cumberland, and chr. 29 Mar 1840 in Rockliffe, daughter of William and Jane Story [cen., IGI].  They were living in Crosby upon Eden Parish in Oct 1871 [IGI].  In 1881 they were living in Beckermet St. Bridget, Cumberland and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  In 1891 they were living at Lynehow Farm Cottages, West Linton, Cumberland and he was working as a coachman [cen. (gives his birthplace as Westmoreland)].  In 1901 they were living in Wreay, Cumberland, and he was working as a domestic coachman [cen.].   In 1911 they were living in Carlisle District [cen. index].  She died 4th quarter 1915 in Carlisle District, Cumberland, age 74 [CR].  He was said to have worked as a horse trader in Dumfries, Scotland [STG].  He died 1st quarter 1923 in Carlisle District (Cumberland), age 74 [CR].  They had children:

1a. Mary Tinling.  Chr. 29 Oct 1871 in Cosby, Crosby upon Eden Parish, Cumberland [IGI, cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Beckermet St. Bridget, Cumberland [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in West Linton, Cumberland, working as a domestic servant [cen. (called Jane)].  She married David Gellatly Murray on 21 Dec 1892 in Blackford, Cumberland [CR, BVRI].  He was born c. 1868 in Annandale, Dumfries, son of David and Mary Murray [BVRI, cen.].  In 1901 they were living at 74 Green Street Lane, Ayr, Ayrshire and he was working as a labourer [cen.].  He was a laborer at the chemical works and predeceased her [her death cert.].  She died 21 Apr 1948 at 70 Green Street, Ayr, Ayrshire, age 76 [cert.].

2a. Elizabeth Tinling.  Born c. 1873 in Stanwix, Cumberland [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Beckermet St. Bridget, Cumberland [cen.].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in West Linton, Cumberland, and was working as a dressmaker [cen.].  She married James Graham on 15 Nov 1893 in Blackford, Cumberland [CR, BVRI].  He was the son of James Graham [BVRI].  They may be the couple of that name living in Whitehaven, Cumberland in 1901, when he was working as a coal miner [cen.].

3a. Margaret Tinling.  Born 4th quarter 1874 in Houghton, Stanwix, Cumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Beckermet St. Bridget, Cumberland [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Rickergate, Cumberland working as a general domestic servant [cen.].  She married William Nicholson in 4th quarter 1897 in Longtown District (Cumberland) [CR].  He was born c. 1876 in Yarraby, Cumberland [cen.].  In 1901 they were living at 45 Church Street, Stanwix, Cumberland, and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  She died 22 Mar 1927 in Dundee (Scotland), age 51 [cert.].  Her husband survived her and was living at 86 Market Street, St. Andrews at the time of her death [cert.].

4a. William Edward Tinling.  Born 8 Feb 1878 in Bridekirk or Cockermouth, Cumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1881 he was living with his parents in Beckermet St. Bridget, Cumberland [cen.].  His family moved to Dumfries when he was very young [STG].  In 1891 he was living with his parents in West Linton, Cumberland [cen.].  He married Alice Kirkland in 1st quarter 1898 in Carlisle District (Cumberland) [CR, cen.].  She was born c. 1878 in Muggington, Derbyshire and may have been previously married [cen., Can. Archive, STG].  In 1901 they were living in Roe Hill, Dalston, Cumberland and he was working as a domestic groom [cen.].  They arrived in Montreal on 1 Jun 1908 on the Ship Lake Champlain, when his occupation was chauffeur and their destination Three Rivers, Quebec [ship record].  They were living in Quebec in 1909-10 [1911 ship record].  In 1911 they were living in Sedgefield District, Durham [cen. index].  They arrived (without daughter Hilda, who came several months later) in Quebec on 4 Jun 1911 on the Ship Megantic, when they were listed as "returning Canadians" [ship record].  They were in Montreal by Dec 1912, when he was working as a driver [children's chr. records].  He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 25 Jul 1916 during World War I [Can. Archive].  At the time he was living in Montreal, Quebec, working as a lathe hand, chauffeur, driver, and munition worker [Can. Archive].  In Jun 1918 he was in the First Construction Battalion, C.E.F. [daughter's bur. rec.].  He was living in Montreal, Canada in 1923 [MET].  He married 2nd Mary Ellen Tobin [STG (called Mary Tanner in 1924, with Eric Tobin as her's daughter's sponsor)].  Both of his wives had been previously married [STG].  He and Mary Tanner were married on 5 Apr 1930 at St. Anthony of Padua, Montreal, a "mixed" marriage, as he was a non-Catholic [reg.].  She was the daughter of John and Mary (Bulens?) Tanner [marr. reg.].  He was buried in Cotes des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal [STG].  He had at least six children by his first wife and three by his second:

1b. Harold Tinling.  Born 1st quarter 1900 in Blackford, Cumberland [CR, cen.].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Roe Hill, Dalston, Cumberland [cen.].  He died 2nd quarter 1902 in Carlisle District, age 2 [CR].

2b. Hilda Musgrove Tinling.  Born 1st quarter 1904 in Carlisle District (Cumberland) [CR].  In 1911 she was living with her parents in Sedgefield District, Durham [cen. index].  She arrived alone in Montreal on 23 Oct 1911 on the Ship Lake Champlain [ship record].  She married Kenneth Douglas Matthews [FSR].  He was born 23 Aug 1904 in Montreal, Quebec, son of Edward Matthews [FSR].  He died 3 May 1972 in Vancouver, British Columbia, age 67 [FSR].  She survived him [FSR].

3b. Eric Musgrove Tinling.  Born 3rd quarter 1906 in Auckland District (Durham) [CR].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Sedgefield District, Durham [cen. index].  He married Annette Brayton on 30 Jun 1928 at St. Jude's Anglican Church, Montreal [reg.].  They lived in Montreal, Quebec [STG].  They had children:

1c. Eric Tinling.  Living in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1998 [Internet].

4b. Allan Kirkland Tinling.  Born 18 Mar 1909 in Canada [chr. reg., ship record].  In 1911 he was living with his parents in Sedgefield District, Durham [cen. index].  He was chr. 8 Dec 1912 at St. Jude's Anglican Church, Montreal [reg.].  He died 13 Aug 1920 and was buried 14 Aug 1920 at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal [reg.].

5b. William Tinling.  [Son of first wife, per STG].  He is not listed on passenger lists from England, so must have been born in Quebec after 1911.

6b. Hazel Marion Tinling.  Born 11 Oct 1912 and chr. 8 Dec 1912 at St. Jude's Anglican Church, Montreal [reg. (gives mother's name as Alice Kirkland)].  She died 21 Jun 1918 and was buried 22 Jun 1918 at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal [reg.].

7b. Barbara Winifred Tinling.  Born 18 Jan 1921, daughter of William Edward and Mary Ellen (Tobin) Tinling [STG].  She was chr. 29 Aug 1927 at St. Anthony of Padua, Montreal [reg.].  She lived in Montreal, Quebec [STG].  She died in 1968 [STG].

8b. Donald E. Tinling.  Born in 1923 in Montreal, Quebec, son of William Edward and Mary Ellen (Tobin) Tinling [MET, STG].  He married Peggy ______ [obit.].  Living in Mountain, Ontario in 1998 [Internet].  He died 23 Jul 2000 in Montreal, Quebec [obit.].  They had children:

1c. Michael E. Tinling.  [MET, father’s obit.].  Married Debbie ______ [his father’s obit.].  He was living in Toronto, Ontario in 2001-04 [MET, STG].  They had children:

1d. Tracey Tinling.  Born in 1967 [MET].  She was living in Ottawa, Ontario in 2001 [MET].

2d. Jacen E. Tinling.  Born in 1976 [MET].  He was living in Ottawa, Ontario in 2001 [MET].

2c. Martha Tinling.  [father’s obit.].  Married Bruce Guerriero [her father’s obit.].  She was living in Montreal, Quebec in 2001-04 [MET, STG].

3c. Stephen Tinling.  [father’s obit.].  Probably the Steve Tinling living in Oshawa, Ontario in 1998 [Internet].  He was living in Toronto, Ontario in 2001-04 [MET, STG].

9b. Margaret Shirley Tinling.  Born 20 Jul 1924, daughter of William Edward and Mary Ellen (Tobin) Tinling [STG].  She was chr. 2 Aug 1924 at St. Anthony of Padua, Montreal, at which her mother is called Mary Tanner (but signed Mary Tinling), and Eric Tobin was a sponsor [reg.].  She lived in Montreal, Quebec [STG].  She died in 1991 [STG].
