1a. John Tinling. Born c. 31 Dec 1800 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire, and chr. there 18 Feb 1801 [reg., BSD]. He attested to the Royal Horse Artillery on 14 Mar 1823 in Edinburgh, age 22, when he had been working as a husbandman [BSD]. He was a Gunner until promoted to Bomber on 10 Jul 1833 [BSD]. He was promoted to Corporal on 13 Aug 1834 and Sergeant on 12 Jul 1837 [BSD]. He married Sarah ______ [IGI]. She was born c. 1805 [Ships Transcribers Guild]. They were living in Woolwich, Kent in Mar 1835 (in Wellington Street), Nov 1836 (in Mulgrave Place), and Apr 1839 (in Mulgrave Place) [daughters' chr.]. He was convicted by a Court Martial on 29 Jul 1839 for being drunk on duty and confined to his room for one week [BSD]. They were living at the Barracks and at Camp Street, Leeds, Yorkshire in Oct 1839 (when he was a Sergeant) and in early 1841 [daughters’ death certs., CR]. Cannot locate on 1841 census. Traveled with his parents from England to Sydney, Australia aboard the Ship “Kate” in 1849 [Ships Transcribers Guild]. He died 27 Mar 1850, age 7 years and 8 months, after being kicked in the head by a horse, bur. Morpeth General Cemetery, New South Wales [Internet, Maitland Mercury, 30 Mar 1850].
2a. Betty Tinline. Born 1 Jul 1803 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire and chr. there on 17 Jul 1803 [reg.]. She married William Nichol [CBR]. He was born c. 1796, son of William and Elizabeth (Wood) Nichol [calc., CBR]. In 1823 they were living in Edinburgh [CBR]. In 1861 and 1871 they were living in Harwich Township, Kent Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.]. He died in 1879 in Harwich Township, Ontario [CBR]. In 1881 she was living in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario, a widow [cen.]. She could be the Betsy Nichol who died in 1889 in Kent Co., Ontario [Anc.].
3a. [probably] Thomas Tinling. Born c. 18 Apr 1813 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [BSD, calc., Deaths in the Melbourne Hospital]. He attested to the Royal Horse Artillery on 3 Apr 1832 in Berwick, Berwickshire, age 19 and was made a Gunner [BSD]. On 13 Jul 1836 he was promoted to Bombardier [BSD]. On 10 Jan 1838 he was promoted to Corporal [BSD]. He married Isabella Dunbar on 27 Apr 1838 at St. Alphege, Greenwich, Kent [cert.]. She was born c. 1819 in Scotland, daughter of David and Isabella Dunbar [marr. cert., calc., AVRI, MGS]. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Nelson Street, Greenwich, and he was a corporal in the Royal Horse Artillery [cert.]. They were living in Woolwich, Kent in Jun 1839 (in Wellington Street), Sep 1841 (in Mulgrave Place), and in Feb 1844 (in the Royal Artillery Barracks) [children's reg.]. Cannot locate on 1841 census. On 14 Apr 1842 he was promoted to Sergeant [BSD]. On 20 Mar 1846 he was convicted by court martial of being drunk while on stable duty, was confined to his room for three weeks, and was reduced in rank and pay to a Gunner [BSD]. Cannot locate on 1851 census. He left the service on 12 Jul 1853 at Woolwich, being unfit for further service from chronic rheumatism [BSD, age 40 years and 85 days]. They immigrated to Victoria, Australia on the ship James Fernie in Mar 1857 with children Thomas, Elizabeth, and David [Internet]. He died 12 Apr 1875 in the Melbourne Hospital, Victoria [Deaths in the Melbourne Hospital]. She is probably the Isabella Tinling who married Peter Ignatius Hweisel in 1879 in Victoria [AVRI]. She married William Robson (banns in Linton, Roxburghshire on 19 and 26 May 1844) on 31 May 1844 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR]. He was born c. 1809 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire [cen.]. At the time of their marriage, he was residing in Eckford, Roxburghshire and she was residing in Linton Bankhead [reg.]. They were living in Linton in 1845 and in Morebattle from 1845-61, when he was a steward at Cowbog [SCR, reg.]. In 1851 they were living at Cowbog, Morebattle and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.]. In 1871 she was living with her parents in Pennymuir, Oxnam [cen.]. She had a natural daughter by her future husband Robert Renton in Oct 1878 in Inveresk, Edinburgh [cert.]. At the time he was working for the railway and she was working as a domestic servant and living in Pennymuir, Oxnam [cert.]. She married Robert Purves Renton in 1878 in Inveresk District [JT, SCVL]. He was born c. 1855 in Coldstream, Berwickshire [cen. (1901 says Duns, Berwickshire)]. In 1881 they were living in Duddingston, Midlothian, and he was working as a telegraph signalman [cen.]. In 1891 they were living at 4 Sunnybank Place, South Leith, Midlothian and he was working as a railway servant driver [cen.]. He married Mary White Hutchinson on 21 Jun 1905 at Hope Park Halls, Edinburgh [cert.]. She was born c. 1881, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Dalgliesh) Hutchinson [marr. cert.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living at 9 Station Road, Craigmillar, working as a drayman, and she was living at 13 Pefferbank, Craigmillar [cert.]. He died in 1917 in Liberton, Midlothian District, age 50 [SCVL].

He married Margaret Dodds on 1 Mar 1907 at 34 Lygon Road, Newington, Edinburgh [cert.]. She was born c. 1877, daughter of Thomas and Helen (Minto) Dodds [marr. cert.]. At the time of their marriage, he was living at 9 Station Road, Craigmillar, working as a brewer’s cellerman, and she was living at 50 Lawder Road, Edinburgh, working as a domestic servant [cert.]. In Feb 1909 he had the same address and occupation [son's birth cert.]. He was an estate worker [her death cert.]. He died in 1918 in Drumelzier District, age 48 [SCVL]. She died 26 Sep 1943 at 3 Hope Park Crescent, Edinburgh, age 65, bur. Liberton Cemetery [cert., The Scotsman, 28 Sep 1943, page 6]. They had children:

She was born in 1841 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, daughter of Benjamin and Janet (Sout) Whyte [cen., marr. cert., AXT]. At the time of their marriage, he was a journeyman blacksmith, and they were both living in Doune, Kilmadock [cert.]. In 1868-69 they were living in Doune, Perthshire [Duncan & Jamieson’s Directory via AXT]. In 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 they were living in Kilmadock and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.]. He died 27 Jan 1908 at 60 Main Street, Doune, age 74 [SCVL, The Scotsman, 28 Jan 1908, page 10]. She died 5 Dec 1917 in Kilmadock District, age 78 [JT, SCVL].
